Evolutionary Reason for Hair Loss?

I know this may sound ridiculous and maybe hypothetical, however i find it reasonable to ask. Hypothetically speaking, who ever the first person was on the planet to go bald, what scientific REASON did he? I know you may answer by saying they would have had DHT-sensitive cells, but that isnt really explaining what chemically or otherwise is making the follicles sensitive to DHT. People have DHT yet dont go bald, so what makes the cell sensitive to it? The usual answer i get given to why am bald is because the balding ‘Gene’ has been passed down. Well who ever was the first person to bald, What specific reason did his cells become sensitive to DHT?

Sex, Time and Power: How Women's Sexuality Shaped Human EvolutionThis is a great question. For those readers who believe in evolution and not intelligent design, I gave one reasonable answer to why hair loss occurs in a previous post — Why Does the Back and Sides of the Head Not Lose Hair?

After having read Sex, Time and Power: How Women’s Sexuality Shaped Human Evolution by Leonard Shlain (referenced in the above link), I became a believer, as it was the only explanation for balding I’ve ever found.

Severe Vitamin D Deficiency and Hair Loss

I had SEVERE Vitamin D Deficiency (MY LEVELS WHERE 5) I’m a male and my doctor thought this could be contributing to my diffuse thinning. I started therapy in three months ago and got my levels up to 20. If the loss was caused by VitD than how long does it usually take to cycle the hair back to normal growth.

Thanks
Love the site.

Vitamin DI do not have experience with treating a Vitamin D deficiency and the recovery from it. Assuming that you do not have male patterned baldness on top of it, I would imagine that the hair should recover (I used “should” because it is logical that it would) in the normal cycling phase, which may take 3 years as the existing hairs undergo their anagen (about 3 years), catagen (days to weeks) and telogen phases (3 months). To learn more about the hair growth cycles, see here.

I am curious how you became deficient in Vitamin D, but pleased to hear you’re undergoing appropriate treatment.

Exosomes

Hello dr. Rassman, I was wondering if its a good idea to treat thinning crown hair with exosomes and 1mg fin ED? I have no hairloss anywhere else and the crown thinning started like 1 year ago.

The problem with exosomes is that there needs to be clinical scientific evidence that expsomes work in treating hair loss. Currently, there is none. You end up paying a lot of money for it. Indeed, the doctor makes money, but you may get nothing from the treatment. Recognize that it may not work.

What are exosomes: Google defines it as: “extracellular vesicles generated by all cells and they carry nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and metabolites. They are mediators of near and long-distance intercellular communication in health and disease and affect various aspects of cell biology.” Every cell in the human body secretes about 20,000 exosomes each day. These exosomes ‘chemically’ communicate information from one area of the body to another. Even cancer cells secrete exosomes and, as such, contain the genetic codes for the cancers.

Shedding a Lot of Hair, Not Showing Signs of Balding

My mother and I both shed much more hair than the 200 hair maximum for normal hairloss. The odd thing is that my mother and I both show no signs of balding. What’s going on here?

You would need to be evaluated and examined. If you are really losing 200+ hairs per day, something other than genetic patterned balding is present.

Face, Beard Hair, and Sideburn Transplants

Hi, I am 50 years old. I am unable to grow sideburns. I am sure it is inherited because I can grow a great mustache and facial hair on my chin, and from there, down my neck, but no sideburns which I have always wished I could. So, I see you folks may be able to help me. I have the usual questions, cost, and will the results look natural? Thanks!

Unless you have a disease like alopecia areata, you should be able to get hair transplants to place into the face and chin to create a beard, mustache, or sideburns. We do these kind of procedures all of the time and they look completely natural. The use of a fine needle to create the sites in the facial beard area is important to minimize any puckering of the skin. Most doctors charge by the graft, but some charge a flat fee. Your costs can be estimated by sending me photos to the email address on my Contact page. To help get an understanding of where you want the transplants, I would suggest marking up your face, beard area, and chin with a China Marker, which will easily wash off. You can get a China Marker from a local stationary store.

Here are some examples of sideburn transplants we have done at NHI:

Shedding Short Hairs with Steroids and a Heavy Weight Loss Diet

Male 40, Norwood 2, previously thick hair before TE, diagnosed with TE after a trenbolone steriod cycle + fasting + excessive lifting. TE has been going on for 3 months. Derm did not really examine my hair. 1 thing I’ve noticed since onset is that most of the hairs shed are 3 cm or less which is half the length of my overall hair. Based on what I’m reading this sounds more like Androgenic Alopecia to me, maybe both. Is finesteride a bad idea in this case as it will increase shedding?

When you combine steroids, weight loss and stress, hair loss can occur and any genetics for balding can then be ‘turned on’. When this happens, the hair loss may not return. Finasteride might help!

Fasting and Hair Loss

Hi Dr I hope u are well

I have very thin hair on the top and front of my scalp, Ive been taking only Propecia since Feb 2008. Over the past 4-5 weeks I noticed an increase of the thinning but I havent stopped Propecia or done anything wrong. The only change was that I have been on a fast from Jan to Feb I havent been eating anything for most days just a small meal in the afternoons. Could that have affected my hair in any way? it is the only thing that has changed in my lifestyle. What can I do to get it back?

Thanks

You are asking a very general question. It is possible that your hair loss has to do with your diet and fasting. Malnutrition can cause hair loss. I would see your doctor and consider eating a healthier diet.

Why did I lose my hair after the transplant? (photo)

I am 25 years-old and had a hair transplant three months ago and all of my hair fell out that I had there before the transplant.

You developed shock loss after the surgery, a common event for young men. The prevention for this is the drug Finasteride which seems to work to prevent shock loss which can last almost a year after the surgery. Shock loss is an acceleration of the normal hair loss process and it is particularly dangerous for men in their 20s who have hair transplants.

Fear of Propecia’s Side Effects

hi doctor,
Iam 22 years old male and my hair has been thinning for about 3 years. I took many medications especially vitamins ( biotine B5, zinc, Durance, Nutri-cap,……….), only the zinc had reduced the hair loss but not the thinning. I used minoxidil 5% but I had an excessive dandruff on my scalp ( even Nizoral didnt eliminate it. I didnt try proprcia since to its sexual sideeffects and others bad feedbacks about sexual disfunctions ( btw my friend had a bad reduction in his libdo and a raise in testesterone)….. Any advice please professor to any alternatives to stop my hair thinning.
Thanks and I appareciate your effort…

Just because your friend had a decreased libido with Propecia, does not mean that you will. If you try it and you don’t like it, you can stop it at any time and the problem will correct in a week or so. It is the BEST approach to hair loss in a young man, and there are no other proven therapies that work as well on young men. Alternatively, you can become bald, but then it you do, transplantation will be your only recourse.

Try it; you might find that Propecia is not a bad experience at all. Very few of my patients tell me that they feel anything at all on the drug. Some reported an increased sex drive. Men are highly suggestive, so if you truly believe that Propecia will reduce your libido, then it might do just that.

Should I do FUE or FUT, I am confused?

Been to two different consultations now and want to decide between FUT and FUE. Both surgeons I spoke to didnt have a big preference between the two, which I was surprised by. They mentioned that with a skilled surgeon FUT scar shouldn’t be visible, as long as you care for it properly.

The cost difference is significant. For reference I have a really good donor area, NW4. If I have a thin scar in back i really don’t care, as long as it’s not huge.

Second question is that I dont want to take fin. I already have mild ED issues so I don’t want to risk it, neither does my soon to be fiance. Has anyone had success with HT and just minoxidil?

I have written extensively on my website about the differences between FUE and the strip surgery: https://newhair.com/. As the person who pioneered FUE, I am an authority on it. FUE is a great surgery if (1) you have a great surgeon doing it, (2) the surgeon who does it has good judgements on placing the distribution of the FUE excisions so that they are not clumped together and they don’t cause necrosis of the donor area and (3) they know how to handle the grafts to keep them viable for removal and until they are placed back in the head. Add to that, patient selection is critical as people with very fine hair and/or low density often make poor candidates for FUE. I believe that if you are going to develop a very advanced balding pattern, then the strip surgery is better because FUE causes donor site depletion when too many FUE grafts are removed from the donor area as shown here: https://baldingblog.com/collection-victim-photos-internet-harvested-depleted-donor-areas/

I have had 3 strip surgeries and I don’t have a scar that anyone can see. This man had about 4 strip surgeries and a few FUE surgeries and look at his donor area: https://baldingblog.com/norwood-class-7-pattern-patient-received-11000-grafts-plus-smp/. His scars were not very prominent but he had Scalp Micropigmentation just to be sure that nobody would be able to see them as the photos show.

Finasteride will prevent shock loss which is common in young men under 30.
