Does Finasteride bring back hairline?

Finasteride, when it brings back the hairline, it is usually in a younger man (under 25) but I have seen it in a 33 year old as well. This is not common and the published literature suggests that it is rare and not to expect return of frontal hair with finasteride.

Reducing Donor Scar

This blog is very informative. I have had transplants in the past, which look very natural (in my opinion). My concern is with the donor patches in the back. I would like to get more transplants, but the patches become noticable when my hair is short and any more bare spots would be obvious. Is there a surgical method/technique to minimize these blank spots? Thanks for the information.

I have addressed this question many times. This is a problem more of the past than of the present. See: Techniques to Minimize Donor Area Scarring and Trichophytic Closure Photos.

You need a Master Plan developed to deal with scars and the need for hair in maximizing the value of the remaining donor hair. Scars can be dealt with in most people using the techniques described in the referenced blog entries above. After you read them, call me at 800-NEW-HAIR or write to me again if there are unanswered questions (be sure to reference this blog posting).

Does Hair Gel Cause Baldness?

I have been using gel for 5 years now. People say that using gel will make u go bald. Is this true? And if so is their a gel that will prevent this?

No, good commercial-grade hair gels will not cause hair loss.

Repair Scars from Plugs in Donor Area?

can anything be done with plug scars from transplants in 93? scars in the back of my head. i mean im desperate for short hair but i know the scars will notice. i dont have time for make up and that might make more paranoid than i already am…

Scars in the donor area vary by person, surgeon, and the amount of transplanted hair you had. Some of them can be repaired or reduced, but I would have to see you to make such a determination.

Does It Matter Where Rogaine is Applied on the Scalp?

When applying rogaine, does it matter where you apply it on the scalp for it to work? Doesnt it get absorbed in the blood vessels and spreads out throught out your scalp?

For example if you apply it on the top wouldnt it work for the front as well, or does it have to be applied on the exact area of hairloss? Thanks

I would follow the instructions including in the packaging. The basic idea is that you apply Rogaine (minoxidil) where you want hair to grow, twice daily. If you apply it on the top, it wouldn’t really do much for the front.

Response to Reddit poster on my article about Hair Systems, SMP and Hair Transplants as choices

Hair systems never look good, IMHO. I know a guy who makes a lot of money and went very detailed on hair system versus transplant and explained very well why he got the system and it’s the first thing I notice every time I see him. Yeah, I know he has it and I can’t unsee it. So that creates a bias, but even if I didn’t know there is no way I would think it’s hair.

Some transplants look terrible, too, especially when I see one on UK celebs for some reason. A lot of unnatural looking hairlines. But I’ve seen a lot of good natural looking transplants, too. Micropigmentation looks good but only for a very specific style.

When hair transplants or SMP is performed in the right hands, it looks natural. The key is to get someone who knows what they are doing. You wouldn’t say Elan Mush’s hair transplants looks bad, would you?

Does Progesterone Cure Male Pattern Balding? Does PRP Grow Hair?

I am a 20 year old boy I have been noticing hair fall eveyday. I have read on the website progesterone cream for hair fall. Is this safe? What about PRP

progesterone
While progesterone is generally considered a natural female hormone, biochemically it is an indirect precursor to testosterone much like testosterone is a a precursor to DHT. (Men produce progesterone naturally just like women produce testosterone in their body)

If you follow this logic you can argue that you should be taking more cholesterol for male pattern balding and all hormonal deficiencies (since cholesterol is a precursor to testosterone/ progesterone/ etc)

Without going into detailed biochemical / medical logic, there may be an academic reasoning behind the use of progesterone (of how progesterone can counter DHT levels) but it is not a standard treatment for male pattern balding.

Keep in mind, male pattern balding is a genetic condition for which there is no definite cure. Drugs such as Propecia and Rogaine can help but over the long run the genetic predisposition will manifest. The only FDA approved medication for the treatment of male pattern balding is Propecia and Rogaine.

There is nothing wrong with doctors promoting off label treatments such as progesterone, PRP, low level laser light therapy as they have a right to practice medicine within the bounds of their Hippocratic Oath. Likewise the consumers (patients) have a right to choose their doctors and treatment options based on their own research and free will. However, it is my opinion that the consumer take a “buyer beware” approach. For every success story behind these treatments, there are many disappointed consumers who have spent thousands of dollars with no benefit. I may be biased because in my 23+ years in the hair restoration field, I have met with thousands of these disappointed consumers.
