How Did People Come Up with the Idea that Saw Palmetto Reduced DHT?

Okay, let’s say theoretically that saw palmetto does in fact help to block DHT. My question is, how the hell did they figure out that saw palmetto berries reduce DHT and not other berries out there such as cranberries and/or bilberries?

Saw palmettoSaw palmetto has been around for hundreds of years and has been used successfully for treating prostate enlargement. Native Americans used saw palmetto to relieve urinary symptoms in older men who had difficulty in urinating. It has been shown to reduce prostate size and it is used quite frequently in Europe.

There are many potential side effects of saw palmetto, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, erectile dysfunction, breast tenderness and loss of libido. That is the connection that made people think that there is a DHT blockade in process, as so much seems to parallel finasteride’s side effects. Some think that since finasteride works for the prostate and hair, then if saw palmetto works for prostate issues it must also work for treating hair loss. Unfortunately, saw palmetto has never been studied in any well planned clinical endeavor for treating hair loss.

What is wrong with my hair

In a separate picture not shown for confidentiality, I was able to look and measure the proportions of the face. You seem to have possibly two problems. (1) you may have thinning and I would have to examine you to determine this and (2) you have a very large forehead, much larger than the distance between your nose and your chin, a measurement I use for proportionality. If you just have fine hair, then you might have a surgery to consider reducing the size of your forehead. If you have thinning as well, then a diagnosis must be made as to the cause?

What to Do About Hair Loss After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

(female) Hi….I’m 29 years African American and lossing hair do to the “Gastric Bypass Surgery”.What can I do to help my hair.I eat the protein like I was told too,can I buy anything…Thank You!!

This topic is also discussed in this post: Hair Loss After Gastric Surgery.

To reduce the hair loss after a gastric bypass surgery, you need to stick to your doctor’s diet recommendations that will help you to maintain your minerals, vitamins, and proteins at an optimal level. Patients need to be tested for several factors including vitamin B12 after the surgery on a regular basis. This helps your doctor to diagnose the deficiencies and treat them promptly before they can affect your hair. Stress can also cause hair loss and these surgeries bring on some stress.

How Does a Surgeon Fill In a Hairline Without Causing Shock Loss?

How does a HT doctor, not recreate, but fill in an existing hairline without causing trauma to nearby follicles. Is shock loss inevitable because of close proximity to existing follicles?

Thanks

We do not recommend surgery if we believe there is a greater risk of shock loss over the benefits of a hair transplant procedure. In other words, we do not blindly advise surgery to everyone.

If surgery is recommended, we use the smallest instruments and take great care to avoid trauma to adjacent existing hairs. There will be some trauma to the hairs, but the overall goal is to minimize this and make the hair transplant surgery worthwhile to be of a cosmetic benefit for the patient. This is one of the many reasons you must pick a doctor and the medical clinic with a good reputation and history of doing quality work.

The causes of shock hair loss after a hair transplant relate mainly to the age of the patient and the degree of miniaturization present at the time of the transplant. A patient with active hair loss who is under 28 years old has a higher risk of shock loss than a man over 40 who does not have active hair loss. The use of finasteride tends to protect the patient against shock loss, even in the patient under 28 years old.

When a Graft Comes Out, When Will it Not Grow?

Hi Dr Rassman, I have an important question for you regarding the study of hair grafts you conducted with Dr Bernstein in 2006. The study states that the Dr. Was able to tell when the growth center for the hair had been pulled out by looking at what he pulled out by eye.

My question is this:

  • how do you physically identify when the growth center has been pulled out?
  • Is there always blood?
  • Does bloody mean that the centre has been removed for certain?
  • If a hair comes out and there is a dried out “bulb” shaped skin on the end of the scalp, does that mean that the graft has been lost or the graft was a dead one?
  • did this study account for partially loose scabs?

After about 4 to 5 days, some of my scabs started to loosen…i started to gently brush some of them with my fingers and some of them were loosely stuck by a strand of skin, which I pulled gently with enough force to remove the scab. My question is this-

  • how can I identify when I have pulled out a growth centre and when I haven’t?
  • Do you think there was a good chance that I pulled a graft out?
  • Lastly, your study includes 18 gauge needles only. What is the standard size needle use or what range sized needles do you use?

Thanks so much for your time and thanks for the study!!!

Firstly, here is the article you referenced, as originally published in Dermatologic Surgery in 2006 — Graft Anchoring In Hair Transplantation — PDF file or HTML

Your email is not clearly written, but I think that you are asking about the hairs we pulled out on varying days after surgery to determine if the graft growth center was left behind. To answer that question, we asked the pathologist to identify the critical parts of the hair that determines growth (the bulge area near the sebaceous gland in particular) and this would include all parts of the hair and what is called the dermal sheath. If this was pulled out, we could safely assume the the graft would not grow. This was not done with the naked eye, but rather by the pathologist under the microscope. By having a specialist look at the grafts that were pulled out, we had an impartial expert make the judgments. I hope that this answers your questions.

With regard to your other questions, please read the article carefully, as we put it all there. Without a microscope and experience, you probably would not be able to tell the status and that is why we put the article together, to be able to guess what is really happening. When the scab is present on the surface, it is likely that the graft growth center can come out.

How Fast Do Transplanted Hairs Shed?

I am 2.5 weeks post-op, and already seem to be shedding transplanted hairs in the recipient area. This seems quick to me. Are transplanted hairs shed quicker if there is no or minimal crusting post-op ?

Transplanted hairs shed in 19 out of 20 patients and they usually start shedding at 10 days or so, unless the crusts remain (which will hold onto the hair inside the crusting). I prefer having no crusts, as these grafts are more secure in their recipient sites.

One patient out of 20 will grow out their hair without shedding the transplant hair (no dormant phase), and these remarkable patients have 2 inch long hairs at 4 months post-procedure… and great joy from beating the odds

When I Use Hair Gel, I Can See My Scalp!

Hey there, I’m 28 years old. When i put gel in my hair I can see my scalp. It looks completely normal when its dry. Am I balding? I never noticed this before

If you use hair gel or any hair styling products, it will be separating out sections of hair to expose the scalp. It’s the same concept as when your hair is wet. If you think you are balding, see a doctor. In simple terms, styling your hair a certain way can make your hair look full OR thin. Various lighting can also make your hair appear thinner.

How Long Can You Realistically Delay Hair Loss?

Delaying hair loss depends upon (1) the types of genetic hair loss you have inherited, (2) its overall aggressiveness, (3) your ability to get good responses to drugs like minoxidil or finasteride. The drug finasteride can be very effective in delaying hairloss providing that the genes are not very aggressive.

When Will I See Propecia Benefits… and Does Showering Cause Hair Loss?

hi dr Rassman,

i have a few questions i havent seen an answer to on here,

  1. how long does it take to see results from propecia? is 6 months the normal time it takes or can it take longer?
  2. when do u think cloning will be made available to the public? ( i know there is no way to tell)
  3. i used to spray rogain 5% on my hairline, however around 2 weeks back i switched and started using a dropper which probably meant im putting on my minoxidil than when i was using a
sprayer, the areas i have been applying it to have thinned out, could this be because im using more minox now with the dropper?
  4. Does showering everyday cause or worsen hairloss? what temperature is best?

thanks

  1. For Propecia results, I’d say 6-12 months. Benefits could be just halting the hair loss, not necessarily regrowth… so keep that in mind when you’re looking at results.
  2. Getting hair cloning to be effective and reliable is the first step. Making it available to the public is quite another. Maybe it’ll be ready in another decade or so, but nobody knows. I’m not sure how you haven’t seen me answer a question about hair cloning before. I’ve probably written the same thing over a dozen times already.
  3. Why did you switch from the Rogaine sprayer to the dropper? It could be that you’re not covering the same area. Using more minoxidil in the area shouldn’t cause hair loss, but using less might.
  4. Showering daily won’t cause hair loss, though if you’ve already got weak hair on its way out, be gentle to your hair when shampooing. Actually, you should be gentle regardless. Use whatever temperature is comfortable.
