Protein Shakes and Hair Loss

With all of the questions being asked about protein shakes, are there any that you would recommend? Is there any kind of “regular” whey out there. I try to take protein shakes everyday, but I don’t want them is they have steroids in them. I don’t want them if they are similar to steroids. Regular protein is supposed to by good for the hair not hell on the hair.

While I don’t endorse any particular protein shake, I don’t know that they’ve been proven to make hair fall out. Your genetic predisposition makes your hair fall out. Protein shakes are not anabolic steroids.

Publication on forum site stating Merck lied about sexual side effects from finasteride?

https://www.hairlosslearningcenter.org/topic/merck-makers-of-propecia-caught-lying-for-second-time/3390

This is all speculation at this time; however, it is appearing in many forums as fact. We must wait for the court to go through its process before judging Merck here.

FUE Scars and SMP Questions

I’m having an FUE procedure and i’ve seen plenty of people on youtube who are able to rock really short fades, pretty much bald fades after getting one of these procedures done (the haircut where you cut really low on the sides and back and gradually up it a little more), and I was wondering, in case I happen not to be able to pull it off, is it a possibility to get SMP (Scalp micropigmentation) over the punch holes (the FUE scars) so it blends in better?

Yes, SMP works wonders for FUE scars, when done properly. I wrote most of the medical literature on this ( https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/ ). Also read this extensive article: https://newhair.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Journal-of-clinical-and-aesthetic-surgery-Article.pdf

Questions about hair transplants

I keep coming across mixed answers online, so I thought it would be better to post here.

  • If we are able to extract and culture to multiply follicles, could FUT scars be restored? Could the smaller FUE follicle based scars be restored too?

  • I get that growth cycles of hair across the body are different, but if body hair has slower growth than head hair, what is the point of those procedures that transplant body hair to the face (beard) or other places?

  • Does hair loss stop at some point? I get that older men retain what they have left, but couldn’t someone on finasteride just keep taking it to maintain until hair loss stops?

  • Has anyone confirmed how it happens? I’ve noticed recession of the left side of my hairline with very mild on the right. My dad is bald, but no one else from his siblings or my mom’s siblings. My diet isn’t the best these days, and I noticed a bit of hair gone at once from the left hairline one day in July 2018. Before that, nothing. Since then, I notice the rest of recession after showering. I don’t use sulfate-containing shampoos as my hair gets really dry.

  • My UK doctor (general practitioner) said he can’t prescribe me finasteride when I initially asked for it, as it was “blacklisted” on the NHS and that it won’t do much to help me. Should I just buy finasteride anyway? Dr. Fox Online Pharmacy was recommended to me before.

Forget hair follicle multiplication as there is nothing on the horizon other than a few scummy doctors offering it for $$. You are correct about body hair, it grows for only a period of no more than 8 months when it cycles another 8 months and disappears so it is not good for hair transplants. Hair loss is progressive though a man’s life, but it slows down usually at about 35. You can take after your fathers or mothers side of the family. The choice is your about taking finasteride, it works to slow, stop and sometimes reverse hair loss with a risk of sexual side effects at about 2-4%.

Some Doctors Recommend More Grafts Than You Need To Make Money

It is common to have a patient visit me after seeing other doctors in the LA area. I like it when patients shop around because then they can judge the way the doctor practices his art. Many times the patients were told to get more grafts than they needed. For example, I might recommend 1500 grafts, other doctors might recommend 2500 grafts or 3000 grafts. Clearly the doctor makes more money the more grafts he places.

The real problem here is not only a financial one, it is a damage issue if the doctor transplants hair into a healthy recipient area just to unload the extra-grafts he took out. Now add to that every graft that is wasted, is lost from the donor supply for the rest of the life of the patient so such dishonest doctors are not just crooks, but they actually damage both your recipient area and your donor area, and at the same time take more money from you then he should.

Don’t get me wrong, Many times I will recommend 2000 or 3000 grafts in a bald person when THEY NEED IT. So, shop around and come see us if you are in Los Angeles or take advantage of our telephone consultation process where you can get a second opinion free of charge.

Rates of Hair Loss?

Hello Dr.Rassman!
Thank you for the previous answers! I have another question:

If guy A starts losing his hair when he is 20 and guy B at 27, is it 100% sure that guy A will have less hair than guy B at his 40s? Once again thanks for your time!

TrafficIf guy A starts out traveling at 55mph from Los Angeles on the 405 freeway going south at 4pm on a Memorial Day weekend in an SUV and guy B starts out traveling at 70mph on the 10 freeway east bound at 5pm on the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend in a Porsche, who will have traveled the farthest by 7pm?

If you can answer that question, then I will attempt to answer yours.

For those of you who can not calculate the math challenge (hey, I can’t either) — I would say that no two people lose hair at the same rate, so time varies with the patient.

Does alcohol cause hair loss

Do you think that drinking alcohol could be a factor (if not significant factor) in male hair loss? I am a senior at a major east coast university that is known for its student body’s tendency to drink alcohol. I started to make an observation that a lot of the people that I know that have drank heavily for the past couple of years (they are now approx. age 21-23) have some degree of noticeable hair loss compared to the people who were more moderate with their drinking. I myself used to drink fairly heavily for about a year in college and ever since I slowed down I have noticed that my hair has begun to grow back thicker (perhaps because lowered my alcohol consumption) although the hair I have lost has not grown back yet, if at all Another example of this would be if you were to take a look at any major “party” fraternity at XYZ College. Of course course the older brothers are going to look more aged/mature than their younger counterparts, however in my experience I started to notice that the a decent amount of the older brothers in the major “party” frats at my school definitely show a greater degree of hair loss than some of the other same aged males at my school who were not known to go out and drink every weekend.

If alcohol can be a significant factor in hair loss at a young age is it possible that it served as a catalyst to speed up the balding process since these people may have been genetically disposed to experience hair loss at some point in their lives?

Drinking alcohol doesn’t cause hair loss but stress does and many people with genetic hair loss who drink are stressed.
