I Have Miniaturized Hairs On The Leading Edge Of My Hair Line.

Hello Dr.R. I am an 18 year old. I have been classified as a NW1 by a hairloss center online in London. I however observer minatuirzed thin hairs on the leading edge of the hairline and the leading edge of the hairline corners but the hairs beyond this very forward part of my hairline are very thick. Does this indicate Male Pattern Baldness or future hairloss? If not, till where should miniaturisation exist beyond the leading edge to say that MPB exists.

Other details- I have 12% vellus hair and 88% terminal hair (I checked) and good hair density in general.

I sincerely hope you clear my troubles like you have for several other people on this blog. Thank you for all the information Dr.R.

It didn’t know there was a NW 1 classification. Many non balding men and women have fine miniaturized or vellus hairs on the leading edge of the hair line. This does not mean you are balding. There is no way to determine if you are going bald based on these things. If you see a hair loss “pattern” that develops, then it may be male “pattern” balding.

I Have Swollen Glands in Jaw and Thinning All Over the Top of My Head

Hello, I am very curious about the hair loss I have been experiencing. I’m 22 years old with no family history of male pattern baldness. Over the last 4 months my hair has been falling out at an alarming rate. You can now see my scalp through my hair. It is not at the rear of my head like most men, but all over the top of my head. I also have swollen glands on the inside of my jaws, however, I have no idea if that means anything. Do you think it could be male pattern baldness, or am I dealing with something else. Thanks for your time.

This appears to be two separate problems. The swollen jaw and swollen glands need medical attention. If you are balding, then it is best to see an expert on that as well. Male pattern baldness might be something you’re experiencing, but the swollen glands are unrelated.

I Just added finasteride to my routine 3 months ago

I have been on oral minoxidil and been microneedling for a year or so, then I added finasteride just 3 months ago. What do you think?

I suspect if you continue with this routine, you will get the results you are hoping for. Finasteride works well in the crown, more than the frontal areas. Your frontal areas have filled in nicely and I would expect the crown to follow. Keep it up.

I Lost Hair After Gastric Bypass — How Can I Get It Back?

I had the gastric bypass surgery in January 2007 and I understand that my hair loss is due to the surgery and I need to continue my vitamins. My question is will i ever get my hair back?

Digestive systemGastric bypass is a surgically produced malnutrition that generally includes all components of the food. The vitamins, minerals, and proteins are generally substituted by post-surgical diets. It may take several months until you get your hair back.

The combination of the stress of surgery and micro-nutrient malnutrition are known to be pushing hair into telogen phase and if you have any genetic balding you may have pushed yourself (through the stress of the surgery) into the beginning of genetic hair loss. Just wait and make sure you are on top of your vitamins and high protein diet that is generally recommended after gastric bypass.

I Only Lose Hair When I Ejaculate

I began losing my hair at 17 but brought it to an absolute stop when I began taking Propecia at 24. My hairline didn’t move an inch until I began taking Sertraline at age 36. However, I only lose hair when I ejaculate. I stopped ejaculating for three weeks and didn’t lose any hair. Once I did it again, I could see noticeable chunks missing from my hairline just like before.

I even switched to the antidepressant Viibryd to see if it made a difference but I still lost hair ONLY when I ejaculated. I stopped antidepressants completely for over a year, the hair never grew back but I didn’t lose any more hair. I eventually had to get back on Sertraline and the problem continued despite the fact that I have never missed one dose of Propecia, I take it at the same time every morning and never have anything but water when I take it.

Is there any way I can ejaculate without losing more hair?

Assuming you are serious about all this, I do not understand how ejaculation, Propecia, and your antidepressant are all related to hair loss. However, I will entertain your observation to be true and will give you a scientifically inspired answer.

I propose that you keep a precise data log and plot on a graph the number of hair lost versus amount of ejaculation over a period of time. By doing this, you may be able to see a pattern, such as an exponential or a linear relationship. If you can extrapolate an equation from this graph, it may give you a clue on how often you can ejaculate while minimizing the hair loss.

For all others reading this… ejaculation does not cause hair loss.

I saw someone with hairs pointing in the wrong direction after FUE

Hair direction after any hair transplant (FUE or FUT) is controlled by the surgeon. Sometimes the surgeon doesn’t put the graft in the correct position and when that happens the hair grows as he planted it (wrongly if he put them in that way). I see this more commonly that one would think because not all doctors who do hair transplants really understand this very simple process.

I Stopped Propecia When I Saw Muscle Loss

Hello Dr Bill,

I am 20 years old and I have been balding since 15 years old. Last year I started to use propecia. For a while, I saw its benefit. My hair loss stopped and some of them regrew. After one year, I quit using that because I had muscular side effect. I mean I had muscle loss, I think. Thus, my hair loss started again. I have visible frontal and vertex hair loss now. My doctor said there is no serious adverse effect of this drug. Well, I started using it again 3 months ago. I havent seen any benefit last 3 months. Hair loss is still continuing and I have no visible hair growth also. Is that normal? Is that a cycle?

Thank you very much
Have a nice day

I do not believe Propecia will cause you muscle loss or be adverse to any gains you might see when working out. Maybe you need to hit the gym more. In fact, there was a theory that Propecia actually gave you muscle mass due to the slight increase in testosterone.

With respect to your hair loss, I would follow up with your prescribing doctor. Stopping Propecia after some time will give you “catch up” hair loss and re-starting the medication will not give you back the hair you lost. Either way, you likely won’t see much benefits-wise after just 3 months.

Do I have a mature hairline or a balding hairline? Photos)

I am 21 and worry about this every day as I constantly look in the mirror and then compared my pictures from 3 years ago and see a big difference.

I am sure what you had three years ago was a juvenile hairline and it changed into a classic mature hairline . This is absolutely a normal mature hairline and the change is normal for someone of your age

I thought that FUE did not have any scars? (photo)

FUE produces “punctate scars” which show up clearly on your head. The more FUEs that you do, the more FUE scars will be seen. If you do too many, then these scars will dominate your head. Every time the human body is cut, it heals with a scar. There is no such thing as a completely scar-less surgery. The surgeon tries to use very small punches to make the wounds small which then usually produce small scars. Punch sizes of 0.9mm or less are best for small, less detectable scars. Ask your surgeon what size punch he/she used.

I Want All Body and Head Hair Gone

This might sound weird, but I dont want body hair or head hair. What can I do to got rid of it permanently?

You’re one of the very few that write in wanting to know ways to get rid of hair. Electrolysis and hair removal lasers (epilators) are the only permanent method to remove unwanted hair and removing all of your hair would be quite difficult. These involve using electric current to damage the areas that generate hair or lasers to burn them at the roots, but both of these methods have a high failure rate (50% per hair per treatment on average).

It’s too bad there is no method of donating hair to other people (beyond for wig making purposes). We know some people that would love to be in your situation.
