Email sent by patient from Turkey with complications after hair transplant

An Email sent by patient from Turkey who stated that he had a red, hot scalp 2 months after his hair transplant. The presentation he was discussing sounds like an infection but he said he cold not go back to who ever did it. I told him that “You must go to a skilled doctor, any good doctor to make the diagnosis commence treatment?

Seborrheic Dermatitis After a Hair Transplant

Hello Doc. can you please answer this question please. Can a flare up of seborrheic dermatitis during the growth period (3-9 months)following a hair transplant procedure,in the recipeint area(itching, redness, swelling, etc..) lead to poor results of the transplant?? Also if the scar from a strip harvest is still pink and tender 6 months after procedure, will it always be like that or will it eventually toughen and turn all the way white? thx

Seborrheic dermatitis should not impact hair growth from a hair transplant. Scars can be judged by their width, and scars that are greater than 3mm may cause a problem. The pink color is usually gone in less than 6 months, but it can be delayed. The pink color has really more to do with the way your body heals the scar (appearance) than on the actual strength of the healed wound at six months.

Ervamatin

I’ve been seeing lots of ads of Ervamatin. As a person who is not allowed to use finasteride due to liver problems, is it safe to use Ervamatin? It’s made by Amazon Health Care.

I have done some extensive research on this herbal medication. I am not convinced about this drug until I see more concrete medical data. Finasteride was first discovered in South America in a plant extract by a group of primatives who normally ate large amounts of it in their diet. They had children that were hermaphrodites, as the pregnant mothers ate the extract in their daily diets at very high concentrations. I must warn you about herbal medications, because some of them can be toxic to your liver as well.

Selective Removal of Cobblestoned Grafts via FUE

This is in response to My Hair Transplant Made My Skin Cobblestoned!

So, Selective removal of the grafts via FUE is not an option to reduce the cobble stoning? I too have this issue, and I only Have a few hundred grafts, not all of them are cobble stoning, maybe a total of 200 are cobblestone. I know FUE leaves a small scar, but would the removal of 2-300 grafts over my entire scalp really be that noticeable? Why do you say more hair transplantation is the only option?

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is done with very small punches where a follicular unit is removed one at a time. Cobblestoning is a whitish scar with no hair in it. If you want these white scars punched out, then they will form new white scars, i.e. no gain. Removing the entire larger graft with the cobblestoned skin is the only real way to do this, and the scar that may be formed will probably be less detectable than the cobbled area. Depending upon the location of the cobblestoned area, camouflaging it with a hair transplant may be needed.

This is a very difficult question to answer without seeing just what you are concerned about. Please send me photos and I can be more pointed in my answer to you.

Evidence that minoxidil can cause sexual side effects (articles)

These seem to be based upon animal studies. There is little human evidence that sexual side effects are caused by minoxidil, but I always keep an open mind when someone sends me such links as below.

Existing Hair Falling Out In Transplanted Areas

Hi, I’ve had 2 hair transplants to the front of my forehead where i still had a substantial amount of hair. The reason i did it was to thicken the area up. I noticed that after the surgery, my current hairs fell out next to where the implants were put, and a lot never grew back. The surgeon said that was because they were going to fall out anyway, but that was 8 years ago and it is still obvious where my hairs fell out, the other ones near them havent fallen out. My question is, Is it true that the trauma DOES make existing hairs die?

For people who do not take Propecia (finasteride 1mg), they run a higher risk of shock hair loss or an accelerated hair loss pattern after a hair transplant. Your doctor is correct, but the acceleration is usually about a few years worth, unless you are taking Propecia (by prescription and for men only).

Shaving the Recipient Area

I came into your office for a hair transplant in September of 2004. It was very successful and I now scheduled to come in for a second transplant to add density in a few weeks. When I came in for my first transplant I was surprised to hear that the doctor wanted to shave the recipient site of head to about 1/4″ in length. At the time it did not bother me, because I was able to wear a hat where I work. I am now coming in for a second session and things have changed. I need to be able to go back to work within four days of the surgery. I have spoken with several staff members at your office and they all have stated that there is no reason for the doctor to have to shave my head except in the donor area, but if my hair is long enough it will cover it up. I wanted to ask you personally if it is true that I don’t need to have the recipient site cut or shaved at all. My hair now is about 1 1/2″ long and I would like to leave it at that. If so I would also like to know why I had to do it the first time or was it just a personal preference of that doctor.

The recipient area does not have to be shaved for a hair transplant, but there are some doctors that prefer to make the recipient sites in a shaved area. When I am the physician I do not have the recipient area shaved.

Eyebrows Overplucked

Im trying to grow my eyebrows back as i want them reshaping due to overplucking how long would they take to grow back?

Overplucking your eyebrow or any hair may cause permanent damage and the hair may never grow back. At that point, the only solution to get eyebrow hair back is hair transplantation. If you’re looking for a temporary solution, I found an overplucking remedy at About.com. No idea if it works — I don’t pluck.

Shedding Rate of Facial Hair

Do you have any data on the shedding rate of facial hair in a normal adult male? With citation if available. Thanks in anticipation

I can not find any source explaining the rate of cycling in facial hair. Hair shedding usually happens after the growth phase (anagen) stops and hair goes to the resting phase (telogen). The longer the growth cycle, the shorter is the resting (telogen) phase, and the the longer is the final length of hair. Scalp hair can grow to become very long because its long growth phase (2 – 6 years) and its relative short resting phase (2 – 6 months) when compared to the growth phase. In contrast, eyebrow or body hair with shorter growth, as a disproportional longer resting phase can never grow to become long. Facial hair in men should follow a similar pattern to the scalp hair (short shedding phase and long growth phase). About 10% of the total number of beard hairs present on the face would be my guess for the resting phase, so count your beard hair numbers to make the estimate work for you.
