Soriatane and Hair Loss

Hello, I am a 49year old female and experienced hair loss on my scalp for about a year but much more noticeable in the last 6 months. I have been on Effexor for about 4 years and have been up and down in dosage as high as 225mg and as low as 75mg. I also started taking soriatane for my psoriasis about a year ago. My dermatologists thinks that it is the soriatane that is causing the hair loss, not the Effexor. Can you tell me what the more likely medication would be?

Many medications have the potential for hair loss as its side effect. Before changing any medication regimen you should consult your doctor. There is no way to tell which medication may be the cause of your hair loss, and in fact, it may not even be the medication. You may also consider if there are any medical causes of hair loss. These are the things that you should be discussing with your doctor (see the Female Hair Loss category for more).

Finasteride dosing

Can you take 2.5mg of Finasteride (half of a 5mg pill) 3x per week as my doctor suggested, or should I attempt to split the pills further? I spent years worrying about asking for Finasteride, I finally asked using my clinic’s online messaging system, and the doctor was more than happy to give me more information and prescribe it.

This dosage is fine. Finasteride ‘fixes’ to the receptors in the hair follicles for about 7 days so the blood levels are less important as is the way you take the drug. About 1mg/day is ideal, but more will not hurt you.

Stacking Propecia, Rogaine, and Saw Palmetto

I just started using Propecia. I’ve been using Rogaine for about 5 years, and Saw Palmeto for the last 6 months. Is it safe to use Propecia with Rogaine and Saw Palmeto? Please advise. Thanks

I just returned from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery conference in Coronado (near San Diego), California this past week. Your question was one of the topics discussed during the meeting.

Saw palmetto is a herb that has been implicated in alleviating urinary flow, which is sometimes associated with enlarged prostate. It has not been scientifically proven to work, but it is a natural herb and consumers take it for whatever benefits it may have. Many people make the link in their minds that saw palmetto could be used in alleviating male pattern hair loss with finasteride 5mg (Proscar) just because it is used for men with enlarged prostate problems. Again, saw palmetto has never been scientifically proven to help with male pattern hair loss and is absolutely not a DHT blocker.

To date, topical minoxidil (Rogaine) and oral finasteride 1mg (Propecia) are the only FDA approved medications for male pattern hair loss. There are some that believe that using the two medications in conjuction may have a synergistic effect, as they have different mechanisms of action. I believe that using minoxidil and Propecia in combination has useful value in some people, but I’d start with one at a time. If you start with both, you will not be sure which one is working best for you, and are committing yourself to a lifetime of multiple medications, when your answer may be just the one.

Finasteride, Increased Sex Drive, Water Semen and Long Term Use

I was wanting to know if you have any information/clinical observations concerning worsening of side effects for patients who continue to take finasteride? I ask this as I am experiencing watery semen. In addition to this, I have an extremely high libido that’s way too high for my own good. In regards to such, I have a very minimal, almost non-existent refractory period after ejaculation. After having sex the first few times around, my erection quality isn’t quite what was pre-finasteride. But this is a side effect that I can very much live with. In your clinic, what observations have you made concerning patients who have manageable side effects? Do they worsen or get better with time? Or is there a general consensus that they stay the same?

Good questions. When the water semen occurs it seems to stay until you sop the finasteride. Some people report it takes 3 months before the water semen goes away. I have seen an increased sex drive from some of my patients, even my own son experienced it. He loved that side ffect.

Most people find either (1) they get accustomed to the finasteride and the side effects eventually reverse, or (2) the side effects continue or even get worse. For those who have a reduced sexual drive or ED, some doctors, including me, feel that the longer the ED on the drug, the more likely that the irreversible PFS becomes a problem (although still a very small number of people fall into this category). For doctors like me who tell the patients with significant ED that can’t mange it on the drug, I tell my patient to stop taking finasteride. As a result, of the thousands of finasteride men I have given the drug to, I have never seen a case of PFS in my practice as many of my colleagues who have similar approaches to such problems.

Statistics on Balding Men Who Seek Treatment (From Reddit and the 2010 Census)

I am not surprised about these numbers. Most men deny their balding, and I believe that almost all men care about it and would prefer to have hair. You can see the embarrassment of Donald Trump about the facts that he takes Finasteride, and this is not an unusual issue for being embarrassed. Men, unlike women, don’t like to recognize that they are vain. Accepting that they are going to treat their hair loss makes men uncomfortable. Assuming that these statistics are real (they seem too low to me, but may be correct), the number of men who seek hair transplants is probably 2% of the 5% who actually get proactive. There were ~160,000 hair transplants in the US in 2016. Considering that hair loss is present in 50% of men over 45, and probably 30-40% of men over 25, and considering that the number of men between 25-44 years of age are 49 million, 44-54 years of age are 30 million, and 54+ are about 32 million as of the 2010 census, there are a total of roughly 133 million men in these brackets in the US, half of which have male pattern balding at some level. Considering that there were only about 165,000 hair transplants in the US, that means that only about 0.00124 % of men has had a hair transplant in 2016.

Only 5% of balding men see a doctor about it and a minority of them (28% of the 5%) try to treat it. from tressless

Finasteride & Minoxidil 4 months

This 23 year old male had taken finasteride and minoxidil for 4 months. This is a remarkable benefit in just 4 months; however, the hair length is clearly longer in the photo on the right.

Steroids and hair transplants

Can i get a hair transplant and take steroids at the same time while taking medication to prevent further hair loss? This is a subject you must discuss with your hair transplant doctor. Bulking up with steroids just causes more hair loss. Why do a hair transplant and lose hair at the same time?

Finasteride Pericarditis (A Rare Complication)

I have been using Minoxidil AND Finasteride, and I developed pericarditis. The VA did not warn me of these possibilities. Today, I am aware of the Minoxidil connection but not about a Finasteride connection. Is there a clear Finasteride connection I can get data on?

There are reports that this drug (Finasteride) can cause pericarditis (a swelling and inflammation in the sack around the heart).tc

I Stopped Propecia After I Had A Reversal Of My Hair Loss – Will It Now Come Back If I Restart it?

hi doctor im 30 years old and took propecia for 3 years with amazing results. Prior to propecia my hair was horrible, thin, and was losing it. Then I started propecia and after 3 years my hair was amazing, thick, looked like when I was 20 years old again. it looked thick and amazing, it was like a miracle drug. A year ago I stopped it because I didn’t know I had to take it6 everyday forever and stupid me didn’t even consult my doctor. worst mistake I ever made. and my hair loss has picked up and looks thin and just like it was before propecia and even worse. I went to my doctor and got a script and started again last week. My doctor said it should help again and I should gain back what I lost but he is a regular family doctor, and I want an experts opinion. Will I get the same results again now that I have started taking it again? I hope I get the same hair I had a year ago back. In your opinion from your experience people who have stopped and re started does it work and bring you back to before? or all that beautiful hair I hair on propecia is gone and will only keep what I have now?

I can’s say what will happen in your case. Chances are that there will be some advantages to go back on it, but the full benefit you had will be a touch challenge. This is the reason that having a good doctor and keeping an eye on your repose is so important. You must have had yearly renewal requirements that this would have been saving you all of this grief.

Finasteride Stopped Working and My Doctor is Too Busy To See Me

Good Afternoon!
My doctor prescribed Propecia 1 mg per day, 3mg per day of Biotin Forte and wash my hair 3 times a week with Ketoconazole shampoo in 11-6-03, follow up was one yr later 04. I started generic Finasteride 5 mg to save $ 6 months ago. I break the tablets, everything was great until June of 2011. I have had recent rapid hair loss on the crown & back of head.

My doctor is too busy, takes months to get appt. Any referrals? Suggestions maybe closer to AZ? No side effects except I have a sore left Testicle for about 3 yrs now, my doc cant figure out why its sore? Im now 51. Thx!

I think that if your doctor does not have the time for you, you need to find a doctor who does. I don’t have a referral for you in Arizona, but you can check out the physician search at ISHRS.org.

As for the recent hair loss starting after switching from name brand Propecia to generic finasteride — I really don’t know. It should be the same medication, just different doses. Are you breaking the 5mg tablets into 4 equal parts? Did you get the generic from a legit pharmacy? What was the maker of the generic? Have you talked to your pharmacist about perhaps trying a different generic brand?
