Can finasteride cause something like Brain Fog?

I’ve been taking fin since August. Lately I’ve been noticing that I’ve been experiencing memory loss… Like if a prof tells the class something important, I might not recall what it was if I don’t take any notes. I also feel as if words come slower to me. I’ll lose my train of thought so easily!

I could just be crazy. Or I could be sleep deprived. Stressed. Idk. I’m in grad school and I read a lot…like I’m able to complete my assignments well, but I feel like I just lose my train of thought sometimes and words come slowly sometimes. Also I’ll forget certain things that people say.

Maybe I’m crazy! This could just be normal…like people don’t always retain everything they hear, and sometimes people don’t think clearly for whatever reason.

Brain fox is a rare but significant complication of finasteride. You described it perfectly. You should speak with your doctor to find out if you should stay on the drug

My Hair is Like Straw After Using Minoxidil

Hey Doc,
Firstly, what an amazing job you guys do with this whole set up: Dr Rassman your blog has provided so much insight for those of us scared about hair loss.

I’m a 22 year old male student. To combat my hair loss problem, last year I used Minox 5% (Rogaine) for about 1month, but due to the subsequent irritation it caused, I ceased use.

The area that I applied this to is now dead, straw like hair, and so much thinner than other parts of my hair. I have read about minoxidil dependant hair, do you think this could be the case for such a short application period? A trichologist I consulted over here, dismissed that as being unlikely, as 1month was too short a time frame. He emphasised to me that stopping minox would return hair to the ‘base level’.

The thing is, my hair loss has accelerated greatly in the past 10months: I touch my hair and it falls out. My scalp is clearly visible on top. What cuts me up inside, is that I think I brought this upon myself by trying minoxidil.

Do you think propecia would be of any use in this situation, if stopping minoxidil has damaged my hair? – I understand that the mechanisms are different. I am merely speculating as to why I’m losing hair so much, so quickly, but I am keen to give finasteride a go. Any feedback would be greatly welcomed.

Kind Regards

Straw baleYou are describing what might be genetic hair loss as well as some side effects from the minoxidil on your hair texture. I doubt your current hair loss has anything to do with minoxidil use and any new hair that grows out from the scalp should be as it was before the minoxidil use. Here’s your scenario as I see it — You started using minoxidil because you were losing hair… minoxidil caused irritation and hair texture issues, so you stopped using it… then your hair loss continued, because hair loss is progressive. I don’t think it’s clear that minoxidil accelerated the loss, though.

At 22 years old with early balding, Propecia is a good idea to help slow the loss down (if it is genetic hair loss), but you will likely not see results unless you take it daily for at least 9 to 12 months. It’s a prescription drug, so talk to your doctor if you’re interested in that. You should also have a good doctor examine your hair and perform a miniaturization mapping so that you can see the progressive nature of your loss over time.

Can genetic hair loss reverse?

I’ve noticed some hair loss at the temples when I was about 17/18 and 3 years later it’s basically at the same level. Haven’t noticed thinning, hair at crown/on top is still fine. Is it possible for someone to lose a little bit of hair and for the balding to then stop for a (longer) period of time? Or will you always continue to lose hair, albeit it being at a slower rate? Cause if there is a chance my hair stays the way it is right now, I might be interested in a HT with +/-650 grafts to fix my hairline at the temples.

Bonus question: My hair at my temples was blonde, born that way. Rest of the head had brown hair. Is there any chance that that blonde hair might have been more easier affected by hair loss? Or just a coincidence?

Genetic balding is a progressive process that may stop when you achieve your inherited hair loss pattern but it can be reversed in younger men, sometimes for years but sooner or later a person with genetic balding will reach his final inherited pattern of balding. The different hair colors have nothing to do with what is happening to you.

My Hair Loss Started Suddenly at Age 62!

I’m a healthy 62 yr old caucasion male. Throughout my life time I have enjoyed a full head of hair. Over the past month to two months, I have noticed significant hair loss in the front of my leading to baldness. I am concern for the abruptness that I started losing my hair. Is this unusal to happen at my age? I’ve been taking blood pressure medicine for the past several years as well as tamulosin and cholesterol medicine. I do not abuse drugs or alcohol. Thanks for you answer

Genetic hair loss can start at any age, but as you suggested, this is unusual. If your medications have been the same medications you have always taken, then it is unlikely that they caused the recent thinning.

You should have your scalp mapped out for miniaturization to determine if you are miniaturizing hair and will progress with the balding process. I know if it were me, that I would want to know why I had it and where it is going, but that would best be determined by a visit to a focused doctor in the field.

Can I do a hair transplant in many stages rather than one surgery?

Yes, if you have hair in the areas you want transplanted, you can do it in stages, slowly changing the look. Most men get away with less surgeries not more by doing it all in one session and then ask yourself, do you really want to undergo many surgeries when you can do it once and probably no one will ever know? I usually suggest that if privacy is a real issue, for the patient to grow out a beard if they do not have one, or take it off if they do. People focus on the face and not the head. You can also use the hair you have to style around the recipient area, but if you want to do it incrementally, we offer what I call ‘Lunch Time FUE” so you can come in for 2 hours at a time and get 200-300 grafts in each session until you achieve your goals.

My Hair Transplant Scar is Wider Than My Surgeon Promised

I recieved a transplant of about 3,000 grafts from another doctor about 12 months ago. 720 are 1 hair and 2,140 are 2 and 3 hair grafts. I am 23 years old and I am not very satisfied with the results. Hair is not as thick as I would hope and the scar is wider than promised.

I was looking into doctors that could possible thicken up the front a little bit and try and reduce my scar as much as possible so I can keep my hair shorter. I was seeing what your thoughts would be on this. I am not able to make it into your office very soon but I can forward some pictures for now so you could give me some initial thoughts if possible before a consultation.

Before undergoing a hair transplant surgery, you must fully understand the limitations and have reasonable expectations. The scarring is also highly variable in each individual and there is no way anyone can predict how the scar will turn out with total accuracy. Everyone wants a great outcome and minimal scarring, but you must understand surgery is not an exact science and no matter how great your surgeon is there is always a variability.

You stated that the results are thinner than you expected. The 3000 grafts that you received was spread over your balding area, so if your balding area was large (Norwood Class 4,5 6, or 7) then I might expect thinner results than if your balding pattern was a Class 3 or less. Also, the thickness of the hair shafts (fine vs coarse hair) will reflect the fullness that you received. The growth of the transplants (100% or 50% growth) may play a role as well. If I was able to see you, I would have an appreciation of these factors and then give you an opinion.

You can always email us or call us at (800) NEW-HAIR to set up a phone consultation. We usually request photos in advance and you can arrange a time to speak to one of the physicians to facilitate the consultation.

Can I Do Anything to Promote Facial Hair Growth?

Dr. Rassman,
I am 19 years old and still cannot grow a beard. I grow a little hair on my chin and a little on my upper lip. I cannot have side burns or a beard, both of which i would love to have. Is there anything at all that i can do to promote facial hair growth? Vitamins, certain foods?

I had a weak beard when I was 19 and freaked out on it. My father had a full, fast growing beard that I envied. Now I am like my father was and wished I had my 19 year old beard. It seems that we never really get what we want and if we do finally get what we want, we may no longer want it. Show patience and it will probably grow out as you get older.

My Husband Stopped Propecia So We Can Get Pregnant

My husband has been using propecia with good effect for 10 years. We are now trying to get pregnant and he stopped taking propecia. My question is, 1) how long can he be off the pills before the hair starts to fall out? and 2)does the hair grow back if he starts the pills again?

Thank you for your answer.

Men who stop taking Propecia while they are trying to conceive with their partner usually stop for two to four weeks. This should not have an impact on hair, but if in the worst case scenario there is a negative effect on the hair, the hairs lost will most likely not grow back (even if you start back on Propecia). This phenomenon is often referred to as “catch-up” hair loss. Your husband should discuss this further with his prescribing physician.

My scabs came off naturally

scabs should come out by itself, don’t try to remove them on purpose. I can’t tell if they are grafts or scabs from your first pic. I hope they are scabs.. My scabs didn’t come off until day 15th.

This is what I like to see immediately after the surgery and the days following the surgery. The post operative washing process should produce results without scabs like these:

There is a risk of removing mature scabs prior to the 12th day. I wrote about this in a medical publication here: https://newhair.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/mp-2006-graft-anchoring.pdf
