finasteride and miniaturized hairs

On average how long do you think hair must’ve gone if Fin even has a chance of regrowing? Like would it only have the possibility of regrowing hair lost in the few months before starting Fin or could it also grow areas that have had minituarized/bald areas for 2 years?

Finasteride in some people reverses miniaturization. It can take up to a year to see the value

Another Steroids and Hair Loss

I took a steroid and my hair is falling out. I stopped it in about a month, but it is still falling out. I have been on Propecia for a few years so I thought that would protect me. What will happen to me? Have I messed up my hair?

You probably precipitated what we call a telogen effluvium, which can be caused by steroid use. Once this begins there is nothing that will reverse it until it goes its course. I always tell my patients that although Propecia may protect you somewhat, it is not a sure thing when you take steroids. I would strongly suggest that you continue with the Propecia. As the hair loss may take months to go its course, stay on the Propecia and wait it out. See your hair doctor as well, so that good baselines can be taken to compare with what will evolve over time. By having measurements to compare, at least you will know when the process has stopped, when it reverses, and what to expect. Advise your friends not to do what you did, so that you can help someone else avoid the problem you had.

Finasteride, oral vs topical

In regards of sides, long time safety, price, practical usage what are the arguments for each method. Also is it possible to make the topical version at home. I’d highly appreciate objective arguments at with some literature for evidence, but of course own experience with trying out these methods.

Oral is better if you don’t get side effects because it addresses the miniaturization that you can’t see in parts of your scalp where you may have already started balding. The topical only works where you put it and spreading it all over your scalp, doesn’t make sense if the pill can do it a a fraction of the cost without the nuisance of daily applications which are time consuming

I Stopped Propecia Due to Sexual Side Effects But Now Afraid Of Catch Up Hair Loss

I just recently quit taking finasteride due to experiencing some sexual side effects that did not decrease when trying a smaller dose. My doctor advised me to stop finasteride for six months to see if my sexual symptoms improved. I took my last pill a month ago.

I was on finasteride from age 24 to 27, and, while not improving my hair loss, it at least kept further loss from occurring. I’m starting to feel anxious about the catch-up hair loss that could come within the next few months. Would minoxidil help prevent this catch-up loss from occurring, or is it more or less inevitable?

If you had unwanted side effects with a medication, you did the right thing by discussing your options (weighing out risks and benefits) and stopping the medication. The catch up hair loss can happen over the next 6 months after stopping Propecia and that is something that cannot be completely stopped.

Starting another type of medication such as topical minoxidile (Rogain) may help but since it works in different ways than Propecia you still may experience hair loss from the “catch up” phenomenon. Everyone is different and you won’t know until you try.

Finasteride, simply, how does it work?

Looking for a genuine answer since I’m just on the fence about taking and so just won’t to fully understand it before I put it in my body. Want to make sure that the alterations it will make to my bodies chemistry won’t be harmful and if it potentially is I’d like to know also obviously so yah basically my main questions are in the title. Also if anyone could speak on the people who claim it can fry your endocrine system and also diminish the neurosteroids in your brain causing brain damage.

If anyone could offer any kind of responses that would be amazing, thank you so much I’m advance.

Men with genetic hair loss are impacted by DHT which triggers ‘apoptosis’ which is essentially killing selective hairs in a pattern of hair loss that you inherited according to an internal clock in each hair follicle stem cell. Since it is the DHT that triggers the hair loss, drugs like finasteride blocks the site where the DHT attacks the hair follicle stem cells. This block is not 100%, but rather about 70% for finasteride. In the original Merck study, the side effects were low (sexual side effects under 3%, even less when compared to the placebo) and it is clear from their 5 year study that those taking finasteride maintained a much higher hair count than those who did not take it (see here: https://baldingblog.com/finasteride-will-i-keep-more-hair-staying-on-it/ ).

DHT is a powerful male hormone and impacts every organ system in the human body but the recommended dose of 1mg was so low, that Merck believed that it was safe even for other organ systems. Since the drug came out (about 20 years ago), millions of men have taken it (the original study was much smaller) so it is not surprising to see reports of other side effects that were not seen 20 years ago.

Storing Propecia in a Cool Place

Hi Dr Rassman,

I need some help with storage of propecia. I live in an area where the weather usually goes up well above 30C (sometimes up to 42C). On the box of propecia, it says it must be stored below 30C. I cannot keep it in the bathroom anymore as its too hot. Should i keep it in the fridge or is that too low of a temperature?

how low can the temperature be for storing purposes? thanks heaps!

In your case, I would store it in your refrigerator, as the temperature in there is going to be below 30C unless it is broken (considering a fridge is normally around 5C). I would wrap it in an insulating type cover, because you would want to avoid condensation.

How to Find out If I Am Really Losing Hair

The best thing you can do is to get a HAIRCHECK test of your scalp which will document all of the hair loss that you can’t see. With this test, you can establish a metric which will allow you to make decisions, such as the use of medications if you are indeed balding. If you start taking medications, you can track your results over a year when you repeat the HAIRCHECK test again.

See here for a good example of this process with photos: https://baldingblog.com/2017/01/10/value-haircheck-bulk-measurements-two-patients-seen-today/

Most likely about to start meds; would appreciate advice from tressless

Stressed, Thyroid Problems, Male Patterned Balding Class 3, Eyebrow Hair Loss and Possible DUPA Present

With thyroid problems complicating your story, it is hard to tell you what is happening without having a full battery of tests in hand, including an examination of your scalp with a hand microscope. There is no substitute for a one-on-one with a good caring doctor to get control of your situation.

Fish Once-a-Week May Protect Against Alzheimer’s

Read the following:

If fish is good once a week to build the brain and protect it against Alzheimer’s disease, think fish for your overall diet a few times a week. Over and over again, the value of Omega-3 fatty acids has been seen as a strong plus for our diets. Don’t wait until old age to take the correct dietary steps to enjoy your retirement while you are young.

Substantial Non-FDA Testing on Avodart?

I am 24 year old currently on propecia for the last 8 months. While the results have been satisfactory, I am not thrilled. I have had zero side effects from the medication. I am looking into taking avodart .5 mg. I know you are not legally permitted to condone the use of it for MPB, but is it more effective than propecia? I am looking to get a little regrowth that i have not seen with propecia. Is it safe to use for MPB and is there substantial non FDA controlled testing credibility regarding regrowth? Please Advise

There are no FDA studies on Avodart related to hair regrowth, but Avodart has been studied for prostate problems and it is safe in the older population. To my knowledge, there are no good studies on Avodart with a hair loss focus either. If any readers out there are aware of such studies, please feel free to send me links to the address on the Contact page. Please follow past blog entries related to Avodart by using the search.
