In the News – Can Hair Loss Drugs Cause Injuries to Athletes?

Snippet from the article:

Arsene Wenger has warned that professional footballers looking to cure baldness with hair loss products could be putting their careers at risk.

The Arsenal manager made the shocking claim when discussing the nature of injuries in his weekly press conference ahead of Sunday’s game against Everton.

Wenger, who revolutionised the English game when importing new fitness and preparatory methods following his arrival at Arsenal in 1996, says some players are leaving themselves open to problems if they use products to reverse the process of balding.

And according to the Gunners boss, vanity could lead to injury.

He says hair loss medications can lead to liver problems, though he doesn’t specifically say which medications he’s concerned about. As far as I’m aware, finasteride (Propecia) does not have any adverse effects on the liver.

In the News – Drinks Lots of Coffee and Tea, Have Lower Diabetes Risk?

In non-hair-related health news…

Snippet from the article:

Drinking more coffee (regular or decaffeinated) or tea appears to lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to an analysis of previous studies reported in the December 14/28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, JAMA.

By the year 2025, approximately 380 million individuals worldwide will be affected by type 2 diabetes.

Despite considerable research attention, the role of specific dietary and lifestyle factors remains uncertain, although obesity and physical inactivity have consistently been reported to raise the risk of diabetes mellitus. A previously published meta-analysis suggested drinking more coffee may be linked with a reduced risk, but the amount of available information has more than doubled since.

Drinking lots of coffee to avoid type 2 diabetes? I guess it just shows that almost anything can be linked to something else if you’re really looking for a connection. It’s the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game, but for diseases.

I Had 2000 Grafts 6 Months Ago, Is This Enough to Get Full Coverage? (Photo)

That is a reasonable number of grafts. If you have very fine hair, then more grafts would have been better because fine hair does not have much bulk to it. However, there appears to be areas where the growth is underperforming at this time, so wait out another 2 months. If at that time the area has not filled in, go back and see your doctor.

In the News – Generic 5mg Finasteride Recall Over Switched Label

Pfizer Inc. subsidiary Greenstone LLC recalled one lot of its Citalopram depression medicine and its prostate drug Finasteride because the wrong labels may have been put on the bottles, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Greenstone said in a recall notice that bottles of Citalopram, a generic drug with trade names including Celexa, may contain Finasteride, used to treat prostate problems and baldness in men. Finasteride’s trade names include Proscar, Propecia and several others.

The recall includes 100 count bottles of 10mg citalopram and 90 count bottles of 5mg finasteride. Both are generic, non-name-brand varieties (so you’re fine if you have Proscar; Propecia is not included in the recall).

The article does say — “Both have the lot number FI050058-A on the label.” So if you are taking 5mg finasteride, double check the lot number on the bottle.

Balding Blog – 2011 – Hair Loss Information

I’m very seriously considering starting a course of propecia/proscar. But before I began I wanted to ask two questions.

1. It has been said that if you start propecia early the better chance you have of slowing down/halting hair loss, but that doesn’t tally with the propecia chart from studies which show that it generally peters out after 3 years. so surely you’d only save your hair for 3 years and then it would quickly regress, not making much difference how early you start because you only have 3 years of good hair.

2. I was wondering if you could recommend a good dermatologist/hair doctor in London, who I could have a consulation with before I begin taking proscar, do you know any who do miniturisation tests or some kind of form of monitoring on hair loss? There are a lot of snake oil merchants in London that are willfully telling you that you must get on medication and I just want to talk to who is honest and experienced.

Block Quote

I have many patients that have reversed their crown loss and held the reversal over 10 years. Everyone is different, but the official studies show that the expected maintenance should be about 5 years on average. That means that some men get better than 5 years and some worse results while on the drug. It depends upon how aggressive your genes are.

As to your second question about London-based doctors, Dr. Bessam Farjo is a contributor to this site. He and his wife are terrific doctors and worthy of a trip to their offices (in London and Manchester). They may be able to give you a referral if you call their office.

In the News – How Hollywod A-Listers Fight Hair Loss

Snippet from the article:

In a town obsessed with staying (or at least looking) young to remain on top, more than a few men agonize over going bald. Superficial though it might be, many derive confidence and a perception of power from a full head of hair.

Which is why anyone who’s anyone in the follically challenged Tinseltown set has come to rely on a few good doctors. Armed with the latest technology, these gurus — having moved far beyond yesterday’s telltale hair plugs — know how to help a man sprout hair or at least give the appearance of doing so, using several techniques from shots to transplants to tattoos.

Dr. Pak is quoted about SMP in the article — “There are a lot of actors who have had bad hair-transplant scars or are covering a bald spot, and this frees them from using makeup,” says Jae Pak of the New Hair Institute on L.A.’s Miracle Mile.

22 and just got 4000 FUE grafts in Turkey, but still depressed!

I am 22 years old. I have been balding a lot since I was sixteen. This made me depressive from time to time and fucked up my confidence. I started Fin eight months ago. No sides yet, but there are moments in which it scares the fuck out of me. After thinking for years about it, I finally took the plunge and went for a hair transplant. Iwent to Turkey to have 4000 Grafts transplanted. Hair line with 50 grafts/cm2 and behind 30 grafts per cm2. It was a FUE. I am very happy with the transplant itself, I think the doctors made a good job. What kind of scares me now is that I definitely have to take Fin for the Rest of my time and do not really have a choice anymore. At least the clinic highly recommended me to continue taking fin. Moreover, I do not want to care that much anymore and not constantly thinking about future transplants and possible sides and also somehow think I might have been too young. Dunno, there are doubts now and all of this would not be such a big problem if some company would finally perform and bring me an alternative to fin, but I guess it will not happen. Oh man. Maybe, some of you can relate. Regarding Dermarolling, I start to lose hope because I think it only works for some people and before the hair transplant, I really hoped it would also help maintain. ust want to have my youth now and not constantly feel depressed anymore. Feeling lower than before. I feel like it might have been a stupid choice cause I am only 22. If you could contribute something, I would love to hear honest words from you what to do.

Clearly you seem to understand that hair loss is a progressive process. Now that you had 4000 FUE grafts, you most probably have reached the limit for FUE grafts in the future (see here: https://newhair.com/resources/#tab-id-4. Keep in mind that the donor hair you have left will have to manage all of the hair loss you have in the future. That is why I continually discuss two points (1) never rush into a hair transplant especially if you are under 26 and (2) always have a Master Plan for your future hair loss like how are you going to manage it. Hair transplants can’ cure depression nor cure hair loss because it is a changing process. Get a plan going forward. I would like to see some photos of you now and maybe I can help you plan your future course.

In the News – Microneedles to Replace Syringes?

Snippet from the article:

MicroneedlesIn a move that could spell disaster for the lollipop industry, scientists have reported progress in designing pain-free vaccines that people might be able to use at home. Someday that might mean fewer jabs at the doctor’s office — and fewer crying kids needing a sweet to comfort them.

The Band-Aid-like patches, coated with microscopic needles, generally don’t hurt. Moreover, they may actually work better at delivering vaccines and some medications, according to recent research.

While not hair loss related, I wonder if these could eventually be used at the start of a hair transplant to remove any and all pain from the initial injections. Regardless, even as a new way for delivering vaccines, it’s worth reporting here.
