Help me doctor! I think I am thinning my hair and have DUPA?
Well, this is not an uncommon question for many people who wake up one day and look in the mirror and see what they never noticed before. Usually, it is never this bad, of course (please excuse the patient but I got him up too early to do up his hair). Hair loss in Monkeys is common and balding in chimps are also common so humans don’t have a monopoly for this problem. Hair serves as both a sensory organ (one feels a mosquito landing on the scalp as the hairs are often touched by the mosquito) and it is also a good radiator where wind moving through the hair allows the body to lose heat. That is why African hair is kinky as it allows air to move freely and cool the body when a man is running. But from a cosmetic point of view, men want hair and that is why I am in this business and regardless of your race, men and society think that hair makes you look healthy and younger. DUPA occurs when there is miniaturization all over, including the donor area (back and sides of the head) and it is very uncommon. Too many young men who read about DUPA (Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia) think that they have it and I can’t tell you how many men call or write to me about their DUPA diagnosis without proof that it is there.

What Hair Restoration Procedures Actually Work?
Assuming price is not an issue, what are the hair restoration procedures/companies that actually work? (It’s one thing to drop 20 grand and get results, it’s quite another for expensive snake oil).
What we do in hair transplants really work. The other day, I saw a man who had 2000 grafts about 14 years ago and he looked absolutely normal with no signs of balding. His pre-op pictures from oh-so-many years ago showed his Class 3A balding pattern clearly. I looked closely at this man’s hairline now and could not see any hint of surgery, even though I knew what was done.
I can only speak for my own practice and the work we do. You can and should research other clinics on the web, but always remember to meet with patients that had surgery with the doctor you choose. Photos are one thing, but seeing the hair in person is much better. We hold monthly open house events so potential patients can meet patients in person. Most doctors don’t do events like that, but you should ask to meet their patients nonetheless.

High Forehead in Teenager
Hey,
I’m 15 years old and my forehead is huge, my hair is about 1-1.5 inchs further back then it should be. I have long hair to cover it,but I hate having it, I would prefer having short hair. Is there anything I can do? Is this permanent?

There are a series of reasons that can produce a high hairline:
- if this is new for you and is an evolving process then it could be a maturing hairline
- you could have a genetic high hairline, something that is not uncommon
- you may be experiencing hair loss
Youthful or female hairlines: Wrinkle your brow while you look into the mirror. The highest wrinkle reflects the top of the frontalis muscle and both youthful and female hairlines start at this level in all children (male or female). If your hairline is touching this line, then you may have a genetically high hairline.
Mature male hairline: Repeat the above procedure, and if the center of your hairline is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch above that top wrinkle, then the hairline is a normal mature male hairline. For you, at 15, that would be unusual as this hairline usually starts to appear between the ages of 18-29 in most men.
Genetic hair loss: This would be higher than any of the two above hairlines, certainly higher than 3/4 inch above the highest wrinkle. One way to rule out hair loss is by mapping out your head using densitometer or a magnifying video-camera. A good doctor should be able to tell you this.

What If I Haven’t Seen Regrowth Results from Propecia At 9 Months?
You always say at the 8th – 9th month mark you should see Propecia’s regrowth/thickening of hairs. If you haven’t seen anything by then does it mean there is no possibility of thickening of miniaturized hairs or regrowth after that? I read that Propecia can take up to 1 year to see it’s benefits, so what’s the deal here?
I do not believe I said Propecia will make your hair thicker or regrow new hair all the time. Medication works differently for each person, so I couldn’t guarantee that. You must understand that there is no magic cure for hair loss and all drugs have limitations. As such if you are not noticing growth, you may notice less hair falling out. Less hair falling out still means it is working.

I am someone who currently is probably not the best candidate for a hair transplant but may be interested in the future if my pattern of loss continues. Hair transplant pricing follow the rules of supply and demand. There are discounters who sell it for less and many of these discounters will not provide the same quality. Quality is defined by the percentage of grafts that really grow and the art of the distribution of the hair. Price ranges from follicular unit transplants range between $15 and $2/graft depending on where you live. FUE (follicular unit extraction), on the other hand, seem to have a slightly higher rate ranging from $20/graft to $7/graft. Because of the recession, prices have dropped. What is Chronic Telogen Effluvium?
hi there! What does chronic telogen effluvium mean? I have ulcerative colitis, and it seems like every time I get sick, about two months later my hair falls out. then after about six months it stops. Then when i get sick again, it will start to fall out again. is this chronic effluvium and will it last forever, or does chronic mean that the hair will always be falling out?
The exact mechanism of this is unclear, but what you are describing does seem to be chronic telogen effluvium. The hair is pushed into a resting phase (telogen) by the activation of your autoimmune system with the ulcerative colitis. You may try 2% Rogaine (minoxidil) for 8 months and see if you can push the hair out of the resting cycle. The good news is that the hair is sill there and probably alive (resting), but the bad news is that treatment results are generally unpredictable.

How and where should I seek professional advice for my hairline recession?
I’ve been slowly thinning and receded hairline since my early twenties. I’m now 37 and probably about a NW 2.5. I think it’s time to seek professional advice. Firstly, to officially diagnose what type of hairloss I have, to tell me how bad it will get and what my options are.
My question is, what is the best way to seek this type of help. Should I go to a GP and ask for a referral? Should I pay to see someone private? I’m thinking it’s not a good idea to go to a hair clinic, because they might try and sell me something against my best interests
You should find an expert in the field of hair loss. It might be a hair transplant surgeon like me, or a local dermatologist who has an interest in the hair field (many don’t). A proper diagnosis include video microscopy, HAIRCHECK instrument checks when appropriate, a good hair and scalp examination and a doctor willing to spend time with you to answer your questions.

What is the Accelerated Hair Loss After Stopping Finasteride?
I am a 51 year old male with some recent thinning in the vertex area, but otherwise a I have a full head of hair. I don’t seem to shed many hairs. In fact, after combing my hair, I may see only 1 or 2 hairs in the sink and never any hairs on my pillow when I awake in the morning. I have recently procured a prescription for Proscar, but I’m hesitant to use it because of some of the side effects mentioned. In an earlier answer to someones post,you mentioned the fact that if one was to use Finastaride, then discontinue it’s use, that subsequent thinning would occur at an accelerated pace. Does this mean only the hair you may have grown as a result of proscar use, or your overall hair in general? I’m currently trying grape seed extract, multi vitamins and Sawpalmetto. I’m also considering just letting things take their natural course and joining the rest of bald headed America.

In my opinion, grape seed extract, multi vitamins, and saw palmetto will not significantly affect your hair loss problem. Bald can be beautiful. There is nothing wrong with being bald.
With regards to finasteride (Propecia or Proscar), it may not cure hair loss, but it is the best medication available to slow down hair loss or even grow some hair back. If you stop taking this medication after many years, you may experience what I describe as “catch up” hair loss in which you lose all the hair that grew or stayed as a result of the drug. In short, your hair state will be at a point if you had never taken the drug in the first place.
