Can I Even Out My Widow’s Peak?

Ok, I’m a 20 year old male, and I was born with a widows peek. Is there anything that can be done, to like, normal that out. I have never had hair on that part of my head and it’s beyond embaressing.

Norwood Class 4AIt is generally not a great idea to transplant hair into a non-balding 20 year old, because you must take into account the possibility that you might bald as you get older. Imagine that you got the right side evened out and then began balding to a Class 4A pattern. You would have a wing of hair where the transplant was done and then be bald to the Class 4A pattern.

You need to accept the premise that if you bald and have the frontal line fixed to your liking and desires, that you will be committed to transplanting behind it if you should lose the hair behind it so you will not look freakish.

My liver enzymes are elevated and I am taking finasteride, are these two connected?

I’ve been using topical finasteride (Morr-F) for a period of about 8 months. 2 months ago, I had a blood test for a physical examination. Everything was fine, except that I showed elevated liver enzymes (ALT/AST) and just barely met the criteria for prediabetic fasting blood sugar. I repeated the test last week and my ALT/AST were even worse.

I’m a healthy male who doesn’t drink often at all (sometimes no drinks in a month, never more than 5 in a month). I exercise regularly, have no history of diabetes in my family, and eat an ovo-vegetarian diet with adequate protein for resistance training. I’ve recently found studies indicating that 5-AR inhibitors have been shown to interfere with liver function, elevating liver enzymes and interfering with glucose metabolism.

Don’t be your own doctor and get professional advice as finasteride will not cause liver enzyme elevation.

Can I Have a Hair Transplant Into a Scalp Scar I’ve Had Since I Was a Kid?

I have a large scar from a head surgery from when I was young. Hair does not grow there, and it looks very bad with my hairstyles.

I am currently 18. Would I be a good candidate for hair transplantation onto the scar, especially as regards to shock loss?

Maybe, but I can’t really say without an exam. You should see a hair transplant doctor for a better idea.

At NHI, we routinely perform surgeries to cover scalp scars as long as realistic expectations are understood. In other words, each case is different.

My Son Has Alopecia Totalis

My son has had alopecia areta past 5 years, we tried all kinds of medications ( from ayurveda, homeopathy, allopathic mecinines) but all in vain.. he is now diagnosed for opheosis…(alopecia totalis). We all are going through stress and depression.. and even our social life is getting affected becaause of all this.. is there any solution.. in laser therapy….
Please help…

Alopecia totalis is one of more advanced types of alopecia, in which hair loss spreads to involve the entire head. The mechanism of this disorder is similar to other more limited types of alopecia, like alopecia areata. Autoimmune reaction against hair follicles is suggested to be the cause of this condition. Although recovery could be spontaneous in a few cases, it may take months to years to appear.

Medications, such as minoxidil, have very limited success and topical immunotherapy is considered the most effective current treatment, but the response is not universal among all patients. You should have your son see a dermatologist who has special experience in treatment of this condition. If you are in the Los Angeles area, I can refer you to someone local.

My Transplant Nightmare Has Ruined My Life!

Dr. Rassman, my story is long and will probably bore you. I would just like to say that probably the most humiliating situation a grown man can be in is having a very noticable hair transplant. I am the recipient of 2 procedure in 1991, 3-4 fin NYC 1992-1999. Since then the new hair outlived the existing hair and I had to resort to shaving my head-scars, cobblestoning, high hairline and every humiliating situation that goes with it. Before this, I was a good looking young man with the world for the taking. I remember the day after reading the sports section on the Daily News and making that quick decision. I was losing, but not that much. Cut to chase- I am a NYC Firefighter for 18 yrs and I haven’t relaxed and enjoyed one second of it. Always worried about comments (which have happened) and living in close quarters with crazy guys does not help. I have spent thousands on redistribution, skin resurfacing, and all the rest of the corrective procedures. WHen my hair grows in a bit, you can still see the doll hair look after just 4-5 days. What you can also see is the fact that I don’t need that much more in order to fill in. I have alot of scar tissue and my donor area is limited. I don’t know what to do. Your websites reveals very frank talk while revealing good work. Doctor, I am so tired of living this 100% selfconcious life. I don’t go to any events, social gatherings, funerals and wakes are a nightmare, weddings forget it, my kids events. I’m tired. It’s changed me. I find I can’t concentrate on anything. My self worth is zero bacause I see what I did to myself. My career is halted. Go where I can wear a hat. I am a member of SAG-whose going to hire an actor with lines going across his head. That’s another career that’s been halted. Can I send you some pix. I don’t think FUES are out of the question. The problem is sending photos with substantial growth since I cant’ grow it that long w/o looking like a freak. This sucks! Sorry but it totally consumes me. It’s easy for a friend or wife to say-” who cares, don’t worry about it” ” you have kids to worry about”- it’s not that easy. I want my life back. The Joe Penny article fueled this email. I hope I don’t sound angry but it seems like no one listens or can understand the pain. Why even live if you look like a freak, have no career, debt, scattered thoughts ect. Can you help?

Actor Joe Penny has been kind enough to share his experience with the repair process and some of what you are describing is just what Joe went through. Joe’s experience is a success story, while others who we have seen over the years have not been so fortunate. We’ve published the stories of many patients that just wanted to be bald again, with one example being that of a local doctor who fell victim to the process. Although his results seem to work for him, his solution was far less than I would have accepted (but one way to avoid a huge wig).

I am ashamed of the history in this profession where the old deforming type of surgeries created work like you are complaining about. It has impacted the lives of so many men and most of the doctors who did the worst type of this surgery are nowhere to be found today to solve problems like you have. Believe it or not, some of this surgery is still being performed today. You made a decision to improve yourself, and fell victim to an industry that was at best naive and at worst malicious by offering such surgeries. I wish you much success and good luck.

As you are in NY, Dr. Bernstein (with offices in NY and NJ) may be the best route to other solutions. Both Dr. Robert Bernstein and I have spent a great deal of time with patients like you. If you’re planning a visit to California, I’d be happy to see you.

Can I Take Medication After a Hair Transplant?

Dr first this site is AWESOME and I really wish I would have read all this before I underwent my transplant 2 weeks ago…

My question is and I know you had questions simular but I’d like to add a question to it. Transplant was 2 weeks ago, and now I’m taken Terbinafine 250 MG AKA Limisil for small amount of fungus on my toes, IF, I were to see myself losing hair will taken Propecia cancel out the hair loss and bring it back to it’s normal state? Do you think it’s too soon to take Lamisal just having the surgery just 2 weeks ago? I am really trying to undertsand how Lamisil in the 1st place could cause hair loss in some!?

I am just so paranoid cause I just spent all this money on a hair transplant and dont want to LOSE any of it, and it also a catch 22 cause I don’t want yellow nails either. Thanks in Advance

Side effects from medications (except steroids) that produce hair loss are generally rare. Those people who take anti-fungal medications do not have a problem with hair loss as a rule, but you need to discuss this with your prescribing doctor who probably has more experience with these medications than I do. I tell my patients that they can take all of their medications after a hair transplant and will frequently let them take their medications before and after the surgery.

Nanogaine

What are your views on nanogaine?

Nanogaine’s active ingredients are Superoxide Dismutase, Capilecti, and Lo-Seb, but there is no proof that this substance works on hair regrowth or even prevention of hair loss.

Can It Take 6 Years Before Propecia Side Effects Show Up?

I started using Propecia when I was 27 and I am now 43. I didn’t really notice any side effects until I was 33. I started having erectile difficulties then which are offset by daily Cialis use. The difficulties were loss of erection during sex and reduced ejaculate. Is it possible that it took 6 years for the sexual side effects to kick in from Propecia?

The drug has definitely helped me prevent hair loss and I would like to keep taking it but I have also dealt with some anxiety and depression issues over the last few years.

The basic question is: Can it take that long( 6 years) for side effects to show up?

You need to see a medical doctor and have a physical exam. Many men in their 40s or even 30s have erectile dysfunction (ED) without ever taking Propecia. It’s just that they do not openly talk about it. You might also have undiagnosed medical conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, etc) that can cause ED. Or you can be taking other medications (blood pressure, anti-depressants) or drugs (marijuana, cocaine, etc) that may be causing the ED. Maybe you smoke cigarettes or you drink alcohol. I don’t know enough about you and since you’re not my patient, I’m just taking wild guesses here as to possible causes.

I suppose it is possible that after 6 years in a healthy man with none of the things discussed above, some sexual side effects may develop over time. That being said, it is more likely that if you were going to have side effects from Propecia, they would appear within the first few weeks.

I’ve written about this before here.

Necrosis from Transplant in Turkey (photo)

This is a case of necrosis. I don’t understand why it keeps happening in Turkey. In my 33 years in practice, as the first surgeon to do 5000 grafts and as the pioneer of FUE, I have never seen this complication. These three pictures show the progression of the necrosis over time and the final scarring that resulted. I see other areas where there is a suggestion of further compromise. These scars will not grow the transplanted hair. Another hair transplant by a competent surgeon may fix this problem.
