I am a 51 year old female who had a complete hysterectomy 10 years ago. My scalp has been itching ever since and I find hair on my pillow every morning. Fortunately, I also began with very thick hair. The itching is intense. I was diagnosed with a fragrance allergy, but using fragrance free products (everything) does not help at all. Dandruff shampoo made no difference. Prescription shampoo did not help. I hate to think I will have this condition for the rest of my life. I’ve tried cutting back on my hormone replacement hoping it would help, but it didn’t.
If I examined your scalp I might make sense of what you are telling me here, but there’s not much help I can offer you without seeing you and knowing more about your history. Just note that scratching your scalp harshly will eventually cause hair loss from traction alopecia.
Since treating a fragrance allergy didn’t resolve the itchy scalp, you should go back to your dermatologist for a follow-up. It’s possible the HRT is leading to the scalp itch, but this is something you should also be discussing with your doctor.

I love doing Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) because at times, the results are instantaneously amazing as it was today. Leave aside some mild pink color to the area of the scar that was just treated (it will be gone tomorrow), he was blown away by the disappearance of his scar from two hair transplant procedures in the past and the apparent fill-in of his crown with just the SMP pigments. Scarring like his is unusual and occurs in only a few patients who have stretchable skin (with high elastin collagen). He said his crown looked as good as if he has another hair transplant today with instant growth.

The drug melatonin, a potent antioxidant and growth modulator, was identified as a promising candidate for the topical treatment of hair loss. The study was conducted in 2003 at the Forenap Centre Hospitalier in Rouffach, France. The drug was found to be well tolerated. Approximately 80% of people found that it reduced hair loss during the short 90 day trial. The study concluded that there was a positive effect of melatonin on hair growth in patients with AGA. The authors recommended more studies have to be done to confirm the benefits for both short and long term hair loss treatment. The drug melatonin may behave similar to a topical drug which was marketed by a French pharmaceutical company which was known as a “morning after” abortion pill (as it was/is known and marketed some 20 years ago) and no longer on the market. A topical form of melatonin is commercialized in Spain (a topical solution called Lambdapil solution) but according to a colleague there, it is weak and no better than minoxidil.

Creatine may accelerate genetic hair loss but with conventional treatments and cessation of the creatine, it could be reversed.
Hello Doctor,
I came across this article regarding Follica – Hairloss Cure: Could Follica Be A New Breakthrough In Baldness Prevention Products? What are your thoughts about this? Is it something you are looking forward to?
Would you peel your scalp skin back? As the article states: …“sounds mildly terrifying: they start with a process called ‘skin-peturbation’ where the top layers of the scalp are peeled back.”
There’s a long way to go before Follica would be able to be taken to market, so I’m not going to get excited about it yet. I’ve seen a lot of promising “cures” go nowhere over the years. We shall see.
