A Hair System Made This Young Man’s Life Better (From Reddit)

Hair is important to young men, actually to all men. A hair system is instant hair and it works for some people. The freedom to have someone run their fingers through the hair is a limiting factor that can be managed. Good for you!

UK Newspaper Reviews Hair Loss “Cures”

Dear Dr Rassman,

I thought your readers may be interested in this article. The Daily Mail, here in the UK, reviewed some common hair loss “cures” including your favorite product the laser comb :). Not surprisingly, they were all found to have little or no effect apart from regaine.

Here is the link: From a laser comb to rubbing coffee on your head, the His and Hers guide to hair loss cures

Best regards

Aside from the fact that there is no real hair loss cure, this is a decent round-up of some of the over-the-counter hair loss treatments. It doesn’t surprise me that that highest marks for the products they reviewed went to Rogaine (Regaine as it is known in the UK), and treatments like fish extracts and saw palmetto lotions got low scores.

Hair Transplant Advice

Dr. Rassman:
I am a 25 year old male who over the past 2 years has begun to see hairloss (receding hairline starting at the front middle forehead and working its way back). I am using rogaine 5% and Propecia daily. Its been 12 months and I swear it doesnt seem to be working. Now I never noticed hair on the pillow, etc, but the loss was becoming apparant, and I am still not seeing it on my pillow. I can not go bald (many many nasty scars on the old dome). At 25 is it reasonable to get a transplant if I want to keep from getting to stage 3, 4, etc. My mother’s father was almost entirely bald, but no one else seems to have problems. What else should I try or do? Suppliments? I live in Florida and noticed you are only in California. How can I get an idea of cost, etc without flying to California? Please help!

At 25, with your history, it is most likely that your genetics are dictating the hair loss process. With both Rogaine (weak medication) and Propecia (strong medication) your ability to stop frontal hair loss appears improbable. You must assume that you will be like your family hair loss pattern (worst case scenario) and if you elect to go the transplant route, then starting in the front and working backward is the best way to go about it. It is possible that the medications you are taking may stop the hair loss short of your full family pattern, but I suspect the frontal hair will be lost. These medications work better on the back of your head than on the front. This makes you a wonderful hair transplant candidate, something we do on young men of your age all of the time.

First, take some good digital pictures of your balding head from front, top and sides, wet and dry then email them to me (my address is on the Contact page. If you are not technical, call my office 800-NEW-HAIR and we will send you a disposable camera. Then the next step will be a telephone consultation with us. From that point on, at the least, we can talk from ‘the same page’ knowing what is really happening. If you elect to come to California, then there is air fare subsidization of your trip and a night in a hotel (on us) once you arrive for your surgery. More info on the NHI Travel Program available at this page. When we speak, I can give you a cost estimate, best and worst case.

Unusual shedding after a hair transplant (photo)

So I had my hair transplant done on Jan 2nd. I had virtually no shedding in the past 1 months but I started using topical Minoxidil a week ago and all of a sudden got dandruff in the transplanted area. My doctor told me to scrub it off and I did and gave him some after pictures with some hair down the drain. My questions:

  1. I did this after 4 weeks. I was told it takes 2 weeks for the hair to root. Did I accidentally peel off some hair or was the shedding at the same time?

  2. How do confirm what I shed was legit or I accidentally messed up transplant?

I’m worried. I have had no problems so far and was going so far with maybe a hair or two in the drain. Pictures attached! If it’s just shedding it couldn’t have been timed worse. Stats: 2100 transplant count Age: 36

Scrubbing your transplanted area after 12 days will not cause loss of the implanted hair stem cells that, I expect, will eventually grow. Starting minoxidil could induce some shedding, which tells you that the drug may be working to develop new hair in the non-transplanted areas. I believe that you don’t really have a problem.

Hair Transplant Growing Slow After Taking Avodart

I had a hair transplant 8 months ago and the doctor told me that my growth is slower than normal as my hairs are shorter than he would have expected. I am taking Avodart. Could this medication have an effect at slowing my hair growth?

We really do not know a great deal about Avodart and what it might do to a new hair transplant. In theory, transplanted hair from the back and the sides of the head should not be impacted by Propecia (finasteride) or Avodart (dutasteride), but one might make an argument that Avodart is very strong and could be prolonging the telogen cycle for hair growth. In theory, it might also prolong the growth cycle when it start growing. Frankly, this is all speculative, but an interesting theory for an interesting question.

Using a Sauna While On Propecia

I understand that using a sauna can remove drug residues from the body. In view of this, my question is can you use a sauna while on propecia? or will it limit the effectiveness of propecia itself?

thanks

No, a sauna will not cause you to expel or remove Propecia from your body or limit its effectiveness.

Hair Transplant Rejection?

Hello doctor

Is is possible for transplanted grafts to be rejected months or years after a successful HT? If so how often and to what extent does that happen?

For men, the hair on the back of the scalp is considered permanent. It may thin a bit with aging, but even old men in their 80s, 90s, 100s will have hair at the back of their heads. So if you harvest the hairs from this permanent area, the transplanted hairs will act like the hairs on the back of the head and will have the same life span. This concept is called “donor dominance”. This is why hair transplants work for men. For women, it may be different and there is a small risk the transplanted hairs may not be as permanent as men.

Theoretically it is not possible for successfully transplanted hairs to be “rejected” years or months after it has grown, but I have seen a handful of patients over the last 20 years who have had transplanted hairs fall out. This may be due to a diagnosed condition such as DUPA (diffuse unpatterned alopecia) or other esoteric medical conditions.

Using LaserComb While Pregnant?

Is it safe to use a laser comb during pregnancy?

I would guess that a Low Laser Light Therapy (LLLT) device like the LaserComb should not impact pregnancy. Ask your doctor and check with the medical warnings in the package.

Hair transplant turns deadly in India

https://www.barrons.com/news/hair-transplant-fad-turns-deadly-in-inda-01669949408

Cleanliness is close to Godliness. I can’t comment too much about this tragic report; however, the surgery was apparently performed by a non-physician team, possibly without respect for the cleanliness required of a surgical procedure. These Hair Transplant Black Markets, have reduced prices to induce naïve men to think that they are getting a bargain but these non-physicians don’t know about the toxicity of the anesthetics we use or many other issues related to the human body’s reaction to the surgery or the medications. Death is a high price to pay for a bargain.

Using Rogaine for Frontal Hair Loss

Is Rogaine only supposed to treat hair loss at the crown or can it be used for temple and frontal balding as well? If it is not meant for frontal balding, are there any products or drugs that do help with frontal balding?

I am not sure what you are treating. Do you have male pattern balding? You could have hair loss from other causes. Rogaine (minoxidil) can be used for temples and the frontal area, but it is highly unlikely to regrow hair there. Propecia works best in the crown, but it may be more effective than monoxidil in the frontal area in some people.
