MRI Reported to Cause Hair Loss by Patient

I have had 2 MRI’s without contract. Both times within 2-3 months of the MRI, I started losing massive amounts of my hair. This has never happened any other time in my life. I lost about 2/3 of my hair in about a 3-4 month period before it stopped falling out each time. Also the MRI’s were about 4 or 5 years apart from each other. The reason for the MRI’s were due to an injury not illness.
They say MRI radiation doesn’t cause this. However this is my experience as it is others as I read online. There are many times in history the medical system has guided us one way to find out they were killing us, then rewrite how to handle these things.

Thank you for your comment. I have not had many such complaints from people taking MRIs so I don’t know how to respond intelligently. In theory, an MRI should not impact hair loss so I must wonder what stress you might have been under, possibly contributing to hair loss.

Born with irregular hairline (photo)

Some people have irregular hairlines and they often develop by as early as 5 years old. I studied 1000 children of different ages and saw such hairlines in a few boys and more so, in girls. For males, this can be fixed after you are 25 years or age when your balding pattern, if any, is evident. If you are a female, then you can fix this if it bother you anytime you are over 18 as balding is usually not a problem in females.

My 5mg Finasteride Pill is Too Small to Cut!

I, like another member on here recently, was prescribed Finasteride in the 5mg tablet once a week by my dermatologist. I’ve researched here that it’s better to take it daily for the most effective treatment, however, the pills that I picked up at the pharmacy are very, very small. They are circular shaped, blue in color and have an ‘H’ on one side, and a ’37’ stamped into the other side. Are you guys familiar with this pill and is this the size that I am expected to cut into fifth’s?

I need to know if I should try and get a larger size, go ahead and cut them (into at least thirds?), or just stick with the once a week treatment. Thank you!

This is a problem that I’ve heard about before, depending on the generic maker. I’m not familiar with that exact pill you’re describing though. Some generic makers use various excipients to size the pill larger, making it easier to cut. Some may even add scores into the tablet to make it easier to break. You can either go back to your pharmacist and see if they have a different generic size available or try to cut the pill carefully.

It really makes no difference if the 5mg pill breaks apart, provided that the entire 5mg pill is consumed over a 4 day period. I am assuming that even with some crumbs lost in the cutting process, it will still amount to 4mg consumed. Taking 1mg every day is better than taking 5mg once every 5 days, but I’m not your prescribing doctor.

Brands vs. Generics

As a physician with over 30 years in the drug development and regulatory industry, I think the doctors and patients advising you may not truly understand the drug development process (and most really don’t, unfortunately). The FDAs Office of Generic Drugs (OGD) within the Center for Drug Evaluation in Research requires generic drugs to go through the same rigorous manufacturing process as non-generic drugs (and sometimes only bioequivalence studies showing similiar pharmacokinetic effects are allowed). Unfortunately, they have no control over drugs purchased online from foreign countries or bought in foreign countries (under the regulatory authority of those regions) – and the language of your blog writer above makes me wonder if this is the case (“Japanese generic”). Of course, a foreign company can also seek regulatory approval in the US, but I suspect this is not the case here.

What this writer is saying is important. You must know the source of your drugs if you do not buy them from a known, approved pharmacy.

My dad has a Class 7 pattern so I guess that will be me too

my dad went completely bald, so i know my future. im curious as to whats the highest (average donor) capacity of grafts someone could extract, and how much grafts are needed to make the head appear full. I know that Caucasian people roughly have 100.000 hairs, i cant understand how some fue results with around 10.000 grafts show great results whereas others with 10.000 grafts look like shit basically. is it even worth it to go for a transplant if i know im going to be completely bald? cause then i end up with some hair on my top, cant wear the sides shorts cause of scars?

You need to find a doctor who can follow you and develop a Master Plan with you for your future hair loss, assuming that you will have it. You may not follow your father’s hair loss pattern but the earlier your find out, the better. Our blog site is loaded with information to answer your questions: Two recommended posts are here: 1- https://baldingblog.com/need-master-plan-think-hair-transplants-photos/ 2- https://newhair.com/resources/#tab-id-4

I would be happy to work with you, especially if you can get to Southern California.

Bumps in donor area at 3 months

I have these bumps since I have had my FUE. What is happening to me?

You have what appears to be burried grafts from a faulty FUE technique. These are probably infected buried grafts which will probably require surgical drainage by an expert.

My DHT Levels are 5 Times Higher After Being on Propecia

Hi,

Before started propecia my dht levels were normal, now after 7 months i had great results but my dht levels are 5 times higher. have any of your patients reported this? or do you know anyone who happened this?

I think it could be a reaction of my body, everyone said to me to never take propecia again, but i’m really worried about my hair loss.

thanks!

It’s great to hear you had good clinical results from Propecia. This is just a blood test, but what I want to know is — what are your testosterone levels? Usually these go up initially and they drop down to normal levels within a few months.

Can a Class 8 Person be Transplanted? (with Photos)

Many of you hopefully know (or at least have read) about the Norwood Classifications for male pattern baldness. I wrote the question in the title of this post, because there is no such thing as a Class 8 patient. Norwood Class 7 is the highest balding pattern defined, but I want to discuss a patient that has an extremely advanced Class 7, so to get my point across I’ve defined the Class 8 term here. He has white skin and black hair with a very, very fine hair character. I had great trepidations when he came to me three years ago to get a transplant, because he had no good quality hair and the worst color contrast possible. One thing running in his favor was a donor density 25% higher than normal. He’s had three procedures with me over the years. First one was 3908 grafts, then 3177 grafts, then 1525 grafts… for a total of 8610 grafts, and as the density dropped with each procedure, the yield also dropped. Of interest, his scar was minimal and the rest of the donor fringe area maintained its height to reflect the dropping density of the fringe hair with each successive hair transplant. He is tickled over the results and could not be happier. The fine hair is see-through, but he loves to comb it and keep it styled.

Before:

After 8610 grafts:

A few weeks ago he came in and we tried an experiment. We applied concealers (Toppik) to try to manage the see-through hair. The results of this experiment can be seen in 3rd set of photos below. What we concluded was that the concealers made him appear too thick and if he dyed his hair a light brown and then used Toppik, his overall look might be better. His eyebrows are light brown, so that would fit.

After 8610 grafts (and Toppik):

This is a very important piece for BaldingBlog and the first time this patient has agreed to show his results on the Internet. In my opinion, this is one of the best “miracles” we have pulled off in this practice. It took courage for him (see his before picture) to trust me to make this happen and I was honored with his faith in me. With good doctor/patient communication, almost anything is possible. This man is soft spoken and often comes to our open house events to speak with patients and show off his results in person.

Here’s the side-by-side of his before and after (8610 grafts over 3 hair transplant procedures and Toppik), and you can see the results are just amazing!

My Doctor Said I Only Need to Take Propecia Every Other Day

Hi I have been using Propecia for just over 6 months with no visible benefits so far. I understand that it can take anwhere up to 18 months for you to see results.

The trichologist that I have been seeing and who prescibed the Propecia has told me that the half life is such that I only need to take it every other day. Which is what I’ve been doing for the last 6 months. Is this correct?

Thanks for your site its a great help.

Half life of Propecia is around 4 hours. The half life is the time it takes half of the drug to be out of your blood stream. Let’s do the math…

6am – take Propecia (assume 100% got into your blood stream…)
10am – 50% of Propecia is in your blood stream
2pm – 25% of Propecia is in your blood stream
6pm – 12.5% of Propecia is in your blood stream
10pm -6.25% of Propecia is in your blood stream
2am – 3.125% of Propecia is in your blood stream
6am – (a day later) only 1.5625% of Propecia is in your blood stream

Realistically, all the Propecia is out of your blood stream after 24 hrs. That is why you take Propecia once a day.
