How does Minoxidil work on my hairs which don’t grow well?

I am a female who has been using minoxidil for 1 month. I have a lot of minituarized hairs and I’d like to know how Minoxidil would work on these short hairs. Will Minoxidil work by pushing out these minituarized hairs and allowing new and stronger hairs to come out? OR Will Minoxidil allow these short hairs to remain and stimulate them to grow stronger and thicker?

Minoxidil doesn’t replace existing hairs but it produces new hairs when it works that grow out of the scalp. New hair growth is a known side effect of this drug which was originally produced for high blood pressure. There are also suggestions that it may reverse miniatutrization of existing hairs.

When Can I Stop Sleeping On My Stomach After Having FUE Into My Strip Scar?

I had fue into strip scar, 300 grafts were implanted to the scar. I slept 17 nights on my stomach post-op. I’m aware of the graft anchoring study from 06, but it was on a virgin scalp. My question is that was that 17 nights post-op enough for the grafts to secure in the scar? My doc said one week is enough and then I can start to sleep normally. The grafts were all singles and doubles. I’m white male, 26yrs.

I agree with your doctor. A week should’ve been fine. Once the eschars are gone, the grafts are stable.

What is a good donor area for hair transplants?

How good does the donor area have to be to achieve that amount of coverage with the amount of hair loss he started with taken into account? Does the patient have to have a very dense donor area or would just an “average donor” area be enough?

An average donor area will work fine. A medium hair shaft or thicker hair shafts produce more fullness per graft than a fine hair this is important. It is not unusual for a fine haired person to have a second hair transplant to get more fullness

When is the hair root dead?

That is the ultimate question. When a person goes bald, the hairs disappear, but many experts believe that below the skin in these men, at least for a number of months or years, the stem cells for hair growth are still there. We like to call that dormant, but they may have died off. Nobody knows!

Where Are All the Propecia Results Photos?

You have mentioned several times the success you have seen in your patients from propecia. In view of this and considering the limited photographic evidence availiable on the web I was wondering of you had any photos you could make availiable showing various results of patients on propecia. I know you insist that those who are pleased with a product are those who are less inclined to comment on it, but I am quite surprised at the scant photographic evidence availiable anywhere of propecia effects. The reason I ask this question is because despite the details saying x number of hairs come back on average, it is hard to gauge the actual effect.

These are some patients that take Propecia that I’ve posted here previously. I’m sure there are others that I’ve posted on this site over the years, but these were the first ones I found in a search.

You should keep in mind that I take photos of my patients for their personal file and I NEVER show these pictures to anyone unless I have a photo release. I do not get photo releases as a routine with my private practice. In addition to these pictures, my experience should tell a great deal, unless you do not trust my truthfulness, but my experience parallels the experience of most doctors in the field.

How Long Is The MPB Process?

How long can MPB take?

My hair kind of leapt into a widow’s peak during 2003/04 and is now considerably thinner than it has ever been in my life. So this is about 5 years maximum – i thought MPB took on average 15 years or more?

What happened?

Once you know you have male pattern baldness (MPB), it remains a progressive process until the day you die, but in reality most people slow down the loss in their late 30s or 40s. There are always exceptions to the rule, but most people are destined to develop a pattern and that pattern is not always a class 6 or 7 pattern (see Norwood Chart below). They may stop at a class 3… but of course, each person is different.

How long will microneedling results last

What are the chances the regrowth I have from microneedling my scalp is “permanent”. I have diffuse thinning and microneedling has given me regrowth without any topicals.

I am fairly certain that these new hairs will not be permanent. They may last as long as a single hair cycle which is usually 2-3 years for the average young male. This is an educated guess, of course.

Why Are BPH Patients Prescribed 5mg Finasteride if 1mg Suppresses the Same Amount of DHT?

I’m considering upping my dose of finasteride. When I began taking it 18 years ago I took the full 5mg daily. About 6 years ago I started taking 1mg Propecia, and I feel it has not maintained my hair as well.

Now, I’ve read the argument, and seen the graph explaining that finasteride suppresses DHT at a rate that platoes at about ~70% DHT for 1mg to 5mg. So the suppression rate of DHT is no better for 5mg of finasteride than for 1 mg. My question is this, if the amount of DHT suppressed by 1mg – 5mg finasterde is virtually the same, why BPH patients proscribed 5mg instead of 1 mg? If purpose of the medication is to reduce the amount of DHT wouldn’t 1 mg be as effective in the treatment of BPH, if dosages of 1mg – 5mg produce the same effect on DHT concentration?

For this reason I’m skeptical of doctors who say that increasing my dose of finasteride won’t produce better results (as I believe I’ve had before). Can you tell me where my reasoning is wrong?

Thanks a lot.

When drug doses are assessed, they are tested against large, statistically valid populations who have symptoms. The effectiveness of a drug is determined by balancing the safety of the drug.

In the case of finasteride, huge populations of balding men were given graded doses from as small as 0.25mg to as large as 5mg, and the researchers looked for what dose produced the best response with the least side effects.

For balding, although the drug worked well in ranges of 1-5mg, the 1mg dose produced essentially the same results as the 5mg dose with the least side effect. The same approach was done for those with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and the conclusions were that the 5mg dose was the most effective dose for that disease.
