What is the value of limiting the dose of Finasteride?

Hey, so if i take just one pill of Finasteride 1mg, my body will need at least a month to get back my DHT to normal? So taking 1mg Finasteride like twice a week is good enough to maintain a low DHT (I only have very, very slow MPB, no shedding) ?

Yes, you are possibly correct. This dosage is less than the therapeutic dose as recommended by the drug company and will be less effective than the full dose but maybe enough to get you what you want.

HairDX for Women

From the press release —

HairDX, LLC (www.hairdx.com) pioneers of consumer-friendly genetic tests for hair loss, today introduced the first meaningful test using genetic markers strongly associated with Female Hair Loss (Female Androgenetic Alopecia). The easy to understand test provides an accurate and understandable genetic analysis of a woman’s likelihood of developing this common type of hair loss.

The HairDX test for Female Hair Loss provides women with a score, called the CAG repeat score. A smaller CAG repeat score is associated with a higher risk for significant hair loss (Ludwig grade II or III hair loss) while a larger repeat score is associated with a lower risk for hair loss. To be tested, a woman swabs her mouth (inside cheek) for several seconds and returns the swab to the HairDX lab. The results are delivered confidentially and anonymously via a secure and private Web site.

Like the HairDX test for men that was announced earlier this year, this is an exciting finding, but it may be difficult to understand how to use it since there is not a one-to-one ratio between the presence of the gene (the score) and the connection to female hair loss. As we all know (or hopefully know, since I’ve written about it many times before), the hair loss evaluation for women requires many tests, because there are many potential causes of hair loss in women that are not genetic. I certainly will evaluate the value of this test in the diagnosis of female hair loss.

Very Oily Scalp and Hair Loss

Hello Dr. Rassman,

I’m a 19 year old male, who has a very oily scalp. I’m suspecting that it contributes to my hairloss by clogging the follicles. I have used a lot of dandruff shampoos (including Nizoral and tar shampoos), but nothing seems to work. Do you know any stronger treatment which can effectivly remove the oil on my scalp?
Thank you

An oily scalp will not cause hair loss by clogging the pores of the hair follicles. Just use a good shampoo.

Hairline lowering hair transplant surgery in female 3 weeks from surgery (1422 grafts)

Note that at three weeks, there is nothing to see and the hair growth, when it starts, will continue to grow at a rate of about 1/2 inch per month. The hairline was moved forward 1/2 inch and the right temple peaks, which were lost with age, were replaced to balance out the left side.

Viibryd and Hair Loss

Is Viibryd more likely to accelerate MPB than other SSRIs? Thanks Drs

Vilazodone (also known as Viibryd) is an antidepressant medication and I have seen in my research that there has been hair loss reported with its use. I have no way to compare one medication to the other concerning hair loss.

HairMax LaserComb Receives FDA Approval?

I received two emails recently about the HairMax LaserComb, so I’ll combine my response into one…

EMAIL 1:

I was watching The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch last night, and a representative from the makers of the Hairmax Lasercomb announced point blank that they had received FDA approval to make claims for hair growth. He mentioned something like 19 new hairs per centimeter. This is a big deal. I was expecting a bigger announcement, and now I cannot find any press release or report announcing Hairmax’s FDA approval. If the comb is in fact FDA approved to stop hairloss/regrow hair, it’s something I would consider adding to my regimen. Have you heard anything about Hairmax gaining FDA approval?

EMAIL 2:

Hello Dr. Rassman,
I recently read that the Hairmax Laser Comb has now been cleared by the FDA as a product which is “clinically proven to promote hair growth in males with androgenetic alopecia (Norwood II A to V with Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV)”. Here is the link: hairmaxforum.com

I’m a bit suprised that I have not heard more media buzz about this. Is this now the 3rd FDA approved method to treat MPB? I have read your prior posts on the subject and am just intrested to know what this new FDA approval actually means. Any thoughts? Thank you

This came out of the FDA and this is the exact wording in the final page of the FDA letter in January 2007:

Indications for Use
510(k) Number (if known): K060 305
Device Name: HairMax LaserComb
Indications for Use:
The LaserComb is indicated to promote hair growth in males with androgenetic alopecia who have Norwood Hamilton Classifications of la to V and Fitzpatrick Skin Types I to IV.

It is important for the readership to note that just because this is cleared by the FDA, it does not mean that it is guaranteed to grow hair. I would like to see an independent scientific study with adequate statistics, done by a third party. If I saw that, I would be comfortable in recommending it depending on the results the study found. I have not seen the company’s submission science, so I can not endorse this and would not recommend that everyone go out and buy one. Frankly, I’m just not convinced, despite FDA clearance.

Waking up dormant hair follicles with Vixarelimab

Researchers have found that a molecule called «oncostatin m» is what keeps the hair follicles in a dormant stage.

Vixarelimab is a drug that is supposed to be used for a skin condition called Prurigo nodularis. It is a oncostatin m receptor blocker. My theory is that this drug can block the oncostatin m molecule which comes from JAK-stat5 signalling. And thus it may «wake up» the dormant hair follicles.

Oncostatin M blockade with vixarelimab were supposedly well tolerated and no adverse effects were found under clinical trials.

When a hair follicle ‘wakes up’ from its normal sleep cycle (teolgen), it requires certain signaling molecules to kick start the stem cells that create the anagen hair growth. Many researchers believe that the absence of an important signaling molecule that is genetic, is what causes genetic patterned hair loss. This is clearly a different explanation than you have proposed. Your idea would have to be tested in animal models and human clinical trials if indicated after the animal studies are done successfully.

What is happening to my hair? I’m only 21 years old (with photos).

You are most likely developing balding from genetic hair loss. There are two wonderful drug for treating this problem, (1) finasteride which might reverse the loss if you are in your early 30s, and (2) Minoxidil plus taking the finasteride pill. You must see a doctor for the finasteride. Whatever you do, do not get a hair transplant until you are at least 25 years old.

Warning about hair transplants in Turkey by blogger (from Reddit)

The problem of those clinics is that they are doing like 15 patients per day. Most of those clinics are just hair mill, everything is rushed

You get to see the experienced surgeon only five minutes to draw you your hairline … He doens’t even answer your questions. People who are actually doing the FUE are inexperiencied technicians … The surgeon doesn’t do anything on your hair except drawing the line and trying to sell you useless vitamins ….

The surgeon even forced my friend to buy finasteride, he said you need to take finasteride for 1 week after the HT to make it succesful lol. They recruit new technician very often because the demand is so high, i went to turkey with a friend for his FUE, the technician said he started this week

The result my friend got is pretty bad, overharvested donor area, unnatural temples, pluggy hair, loft graft during operation, technician using snapchat during the operation etc … And he choosed one of the best “low cost” clinic in Turkey with a ton of “good reviews” So basically those clinics only show the good results or fake review …

Be careful, if FUE price in turkey is cheap, it’s for a reason
