I Modified My Finasteride Dose to Reduce My Sexual Side Effects

I lowered my Finasteride dosage from every other day to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday because I have impotence. I started this schedule only a few weeks ago, and my libido is still very low. I don’t know if Finasteride is the cause, but I know that the only way to find out for sure is to stop taking it, which I’m not prepared to do. Last year, I reduced my Finasteride dose from 1.25 mg daily to only Monday and Thursday due to low libido. It took 6-7 months for my negative sexual side effects to go away. My side effects returned after I increased my dose to every other day. Is my expectation correct — Will it take several months for my libido to return to normal (as long as Finasteride is the cause)?

Reducing the dose to as low as two pills a week is a reasonable approach, and as that seemed to address your libido, you should consider that to be the dose that is best for you. It will still be valuable in the treatment of your hair loss, maybe just 50% as effective.

Bleeding and graft loss after a hair transplant (photo)

There is little that can be done at this time. Go through the post-operative care with washing until the recipient area cleans up. Then look at this recipient area very closely. You may have to wait a full 8 months to know what needs to be done, if anything

More on Rogaine Foam

In a previous post, I discussed Rogaine Foam when it just came to market. There appears to be good information now that the foam delivery system for Rogaine seems to increase the effectiveness of the medication by a factor greater than two. With greater effectiveness as measured by increasing blood levels, one could and should assume that the delivery into the skin is more effective than the traditional oil or alcohol base of the ‘old’ standard product. Greater skin delivery will almost certainly bring better benefits. Time, of course, will tell us what it all means, but for the moment, I would recommend using this product and sticking with it for a full 8 months before drawing conclusions one way or the other.

Body Hair Transplant — A Case of 100% Failure

I saw a patient earlier this week who had a well known surgeon place hundreds of body hair grafts into a bald area of his scalp about two years ago. This surgeon is one who promotes his body hair transplant procedures quite heavily, particularly on various websites and hair loss forums. No, I won’t name names (do your research and you’ll probably figure it out). There was 100% failure for the body hair to grow. Yes, a complete disaster. As one might expect, this patient was quite angry because he spent $11,000 and had great hope for this procedure, as he was depleted of donor hair from the back of the scalp.

Those looking to use body hair to transplant into their scalps should strongly consider other options if they are available, as this is not the first time something like this has occurred. I’ve read various reports and have heard quite a bit about this level of growth failure before.

Respectfully, the patient has requested that his photos not be published here.

Born with a Mature Hairline?

Hello doctor,
First thank you to read my question.
I’m 19 years and i never had a straight hairline. It is with curves. Could it be possible to born with a curve hairline ? Because i never had the feeling to loose them! I would be relieved if you answer me.
thank you

We are all unique individuals and you may just have a higher hairline than others. If you send me photos of your face from the eyebrows up, I will give you an opinion about your hairline. Please take at least 2 pictures — one with your eyebrows lifted up as you look up, and the other with your eyes looking down.

My Aunt Got a Chemical Burn a Year Ago and Still Has a Bald Spot

Hi there it has been 1 year since my aunt has burnt my scalp with a relaxer it was red then healed but now there is a bald spot will my hair grow back and i am 14. what can i do to help it grow back? how fast will it grow? please help!

Honestly, I do not know. Your aunt’s hair may never grow back if the damage is significant and the burn went down to the root of the hair. If it was to grow back, I’d expect it might have grown back by now (since it’s been a year) or at least some regrowth should’ve occurred.

She should have the burned area examined by a dermatologist.

Breakthrough FUE Announcement by the New Hair Institute

In our constant efforts to improve the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) experience, we’ve figured out a way to perform FUE without shaving the donor area! We call this procedure a mini-FUE (mFUE). One of the great drawbacks to FUE has been the social disruptions that shaving the side and back of the head causes in people undergoing this procedure. Many patients choose to stay away from social engagements until the hair grows out (enough to hide the donor wounds made by the FUE technique on the donor area). Having long hair in front and on the top of the head with a shaved back of the head draws attention, and people wonder why you have this crazy haircut. It is hard to keep a secret.

We have developed and tested the use of FUE harvesting without shaving the donor area, which allows us to go directly into the donor area where we extract the FUE grafts. We advise the patient to wash the back of their head the next morning, then combing it, apply whatever products to hold the hair, and then go on with your day. With FUE, there are no restrictions with regard to exercise or lifting weights within 36 hours of the procedure and if a patient wants to run a marathon, we will not stop them.

At this time, we are limiting the size of these sessions to no more than 300 grafts per session and are introducing this technique at a cost of $3000. With careful planning, the patient can come back as often as they wish, adding 300 grafts each time. This technique works well for people needing small amounts of hair, for example: (a) advancing the hairline, (b) filling in a hairline, (c) filling in areas where further hair loss progressed, (d) touch-up as needed. We do not recommend large session, long hair FUE procedures at this time.

My Dad Was Completely Bald at 35 Years Old, and I’m 39 Now…

Hi Dr Rassmann,
currently i am a norwood 2 to 3, i am 39 years of age started to notice hairloss around 21 years of age, same as my father.i have been on proscar for 9 years all good with a touch more hairloss in crown area, recently changed to avodart. seems to be going ok. i have also recieved 2300 FUT in the last 10 years or so, with good results. My concern is this,my late father was close to a norwood 7,at 72 years of age, also had senile alopecia (thinning sides and back) mothers side no balding, well norwood 2 maybe her father couple of uncles, same as dads side.As i mentioned before me and dad started balding at same age 21, though dad was completely bald at 35.Dad had thick hair i have very fine hair.Have i made a mistake having hair surgery?

Although you gave me a great deal of information, I can not judge you enough without seeing you to tell you what I think. Generally, at 35 years old, some miniaturization will show up in the future balding area by now. Most Norwood Class 7 patients have their hair loss pattern complete by the age of 35, so I would expect that with regard to your fear of a future Class 7 pattern, it may not occur. With regard to your hair transplants, this should have been covered by you and your doctor when you built your Master Plan for hair loss. I would revisit it again and update it based upon where you are now and the degree of miniaturization found on your scalp. Senile alopecia may be genetic, so that is a real concern, but not for the short term (next 20 years of so). If you are happy with your transplants, then I doubt that you made a mistake (assuming that it corrected what you wanted to correct) and now can enjoy the value of the transplanted hair for the future.

Bumps on beard grafts, why?

Why do so many people complain about bumps/skin discoloration after beard transplants? Is this an unavoidable side effect?

Bumps in the skin should not occur if the grafts are trimmed of most of its skin and placed flush with the surface of the recipient area?
