I Am Balding And I Can’t Get A Job

Hi Doc, Here is an interesting msg I ran into in Craigslist, a guy who is job hunting, might be good for the blog sfo Help! I am bald and cannot get a job! “Recently, people interviewing me have been staring at my bald head. I used to have a receding hairline (a la George Costanza) so I keep my hair shaved bald now. Nobody used to stare before, now they do a lot. I notice that a lot of IT guys are bald and does not seem to keep them from getting hired. Am I being discriminated as a bald (I mean “follically challenged”) man because people in sales/marketing are supposed to be cool looking (unlike IT nerds) so they are not hiring me because of my looks? Should I do the hair transplant thing? I always thought that the bald-shaved look was cool, sort of like the no-collar shirts used to be.

Myths exist about men with hair loss reflect the superficial nature of our society which judges a “book by its cover’. These myths, at times, cut deep into the psychology of our culture. About 9 years ago, I ran a radio talk show called “The Inner Man”. It ran an hour once a week. We covered many subject from sex to religion and became fairly popular because of the controversial subject material. One show, in particular, discussed discrimination targeting bald men. The switchboard went crazy with many call-in listeners. I remember one man who called in and told us that he was a Vice President of Sales for a very large company and he was very bald himself. Then he told me that generally bald men can’t be trusted and he never hires balding men because of that. As a bald many, he must have known something about himself with that comment because it made no sense, particularly in his case.

The image of trusting men by their appeearance, however, is common issue in politics. Full header hairy men win more elections than balding me across the nation. Every elected president after Eisenhower, has had a full head of hair and many pundits infer that men with a full head of hair are trustworthy. That is not to say that a bald man is not trustworthy, but prejudices go back centuries. Women, for example, have preferred full haired men well before the 1900s because men who lost their hair often had some disease like tuberculous, making them undependable marriage candidates because they may die early leaving them with children and no support. Although tuberculous is uncommon today and we understand that balding is a genetic condition that has nothing to do with health in 99%.9 of men, but the cultural hangovers of history probably left a mark through our present time.

From what my patient’s tell me, I can assume that getting hair back, produces a man who is more self confident. I have heard this from men who have made it in their careers after I have restored their hair, particularly those who eventually became successful actors (we are in Hollywood so we get a fair number of actors). I remember an African American who wanted to be America’s first black president and believed he could not do it without hair on his head. I have heard these stories for the 24 years I have been in practice and those who have had their hair restored have reported that this surgery and this change in their appearance was a milestone in the development of successful careers. Hair does bring: freedom from the fear of the unknown, freedom from the fear of looking older, and a general feeling of more confidence for the man we all see in the mirror

What should you do? the above poster asked. Clearly this is an issue for him. He should become educated about hair restoration as the first step he might consider. He could come to one of our Open House events as he is in Southern California and he can meet many of the men who have had their hair put back back and ask them the questions he asked on Craigslist. He should research the internet and the many forums that address hair loss. He should interact with the community through social networks. He might find the answer by probing the world around him.

Will finasteride maintain your hair as you get older if you stick to it?

Wondering if you have strong hairloss genes in our family that would make you end up at a NW 5-6 at a rather young age and start taking fin were you still able to maintain?

I have had many patients on finasteride since it came out and never had a hair transplant. These men found that it maintained their hair. A few stopped it and were shocked that they lost hair from stopping it and most quickly went back on it but not everyone grew back what they lost from stopping it. I don’t know if finasteride can stop the final progression of hair loss, but it does seem to hold on to some hair in almost everyone. I personally have been curious to see a person who became a Class 7 pattern male when he was 23, what would have happened to him had he been on finasteride. In other words, could it have stopped the progression to his Class 7 pattern?

I am now 1 months after FUE, what is wrong with my donor area?

You have something called ‘donor site depletion’ or you could have shock loss which means that the FUE grafts were taken too close and possibly too many for your donor area to support it. Maybe some of the hairs have been shocked out and may return, but if this continues through the 8th month, then you have a problem, the only solution is Scalpmicropigmentation which can hide the effects of the missing hair very well.

Will I Experience the Same Side Effects from Dutasteride As I Do From Propecia?

I read your blog everyday, and really appreciate the advice you give to the balding community.

This is my question: If I had negative side effects from taking finasteride (Propecia) that actually made me stop taking the medication even after cutting the dosage, does this mean that I will likely experience the same or similar side effects if I decided to take Dutasteride? Do they contain the same side effect-causing ingredients, or do they work in different ways? The answer to this would really be helpful, as I am interested in taking Dutasteride, but was wondering whether the side effects that I had from Propecia would occur with Dutasteride (or even in a worse way).

Thanks so much for your time.

Those two medications work in similar ways, so I would expect the side effects should be similar. In fact, dutasteride is a stronger drug with a longer half-life, so if you experienced side effects from finasteride I would have to assume you’d see them with dutasteride… perhaps even to a greater degree and taking more time to disappear.

Remember though, dutasteride is not FDA approved to treat hair loss at this time. Your doctor would have to be willing to prescribe it off-label to you, something many doctors will not do.

I Am Worried About Balding. I See Thin Tapered Hair. Am I Balding?

Recently, I’ve been worrying about my hair as I’m seeing more hairs fall out in the shower. The issue is that at least have these hairs are short (1 inch or less), thin and tapered at the end, not the root. My hair on my head in general does not look or feel any thinner but the amount of these types of hairs falling out is concerning me. Are these types of hairs an early symptom of balding? Thanks.

Male pattern balding (MPB) is a genetic trait. The hair loss is apparent from a certain “pattern” that develops. The morphology of hair may be an sign of hair loss as miniaturized hair is smaller in its diameter. However ALL of us (even those who are not balding) have miniaturized hair. It is part of the cycle of hair.

Will My Anxiety Medications Interfere with Propecia?

Dr. Rassman,

I am a 22 year old male who just started on Propecia. I am currently taking Lamictal and Lithium for anxiety, do you think these drugs could interfere with the effectiveness of propecia?

You should always check with your prescribing doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about any medications interacting, but the probable answer is no.

For what it’s worth, Drugs.com shows no known interactions in their database:

I Can’t Handle Propecia!

Hello Dr. Rassman,

This is without a doubt the best hair loss site on the web. I have learnt a lot over the last year or so. I really hope you can find the time to answer my questions.

I am 28 and have noticed that my hairline has receded on either side of the widows peak and even the widows peak looks thinner and see through now than it did 3-4 years ago (when I believe the changes started). I can feel my hair has thinned in a norwood 3a pattern although this is not noticable to others yet.

My question is regarding propecia. I have tried to take it but no matter how little a dose I tried I had the same side effects (low libido and erectile dysfunction). I tried 1mg daily, 0.5mg daily, 0.5mg every other day and 0.25mg daily but just could not adjust to it. What would be your suggestion for me and others in my situation as I would really like to try and combat the hair loss? I have been using minoxidil but is there anything else I can do as I really can’t handle propecia?

Also with regard to balding patterns you have said that the final balding patterns become evident for young men that start losing their hair early but as mine started at 24-25 when would you expect my final pattern to be evident as it is not obvious yet but I can only guess at a Norwood 3a as the hair still feels very thick past this point?

I would really appreciate if you could take the time to answer my questions. Thanks

Compliments will get you a long way with me, but not long enough to solve your Propecia (finasteride) problem. While I don’t know how long you were on the medication before each of your dosing changes, you could just be one of the men who just can’t tolerate even a small dose. Minoxidil is likely your only other option, aside from perhaps a hair transplant. You indicated that you’re in the UK, so I’d get yourself followed by a good doctor like Dr. Bessam Farjo, who is located in your area.

It’s really difficult to say when your final pattern would be evident without any real history to look back on. Unfortunately, I can’t give you any kind of realistic estimate on when your hair loss will stop.

Will Shaving My Head Bald Lead to Eventual Hair Loss?

Is it true that women that shave their legs all the time eventually will have less and less hair growing on their legs? What I’m getting at is, as a 23 year old man that shaves his head daily, if I decide in a few years to grow my hair out again am I going to run the risk of going bald from all the shaving? I’ve been shaving my head completely bald since I was a teenager and have no hair loss in my immediate family that I know of. And before I started shaving my head, I had no visible loss. I just want to know if I’m hurting my hair by shaving it off every morning.

Thanks!!!

These are old wives tales and have no truth to them. A similar myth is also shaving the head will make the hairs grow out thicker or fuller. False!

With dutasteride half life of 5 weeks, why take it daily?

What about dutasteride? Going by that logic and considering its half life, shouldn’t we gap duasteridet dosage to like once a week or once every 4 days or something? Thanks.

I agree that with a 5 week half life for dutasteride, a once a week dose should work.
