I’m 21 and Balding — What To Do?
Dear Sir:
I’m 21 years old , i’m suffering from hair loss , its not that much till now but i have a feeling that if i just ignored it , it will be very bad later , & i realy care sooooooooooo much about my Look. So please tell me what can i do , Do you prefer surgery for me , or Drugs ( if yes mention one ) i used to use REGAIN EXTRA STRAINGTH . but i stopped. because i wanted a faster solution . please reply as soon as possible . thanks so much
It is very difficult to evaluate hair loss without at least pictures, and an in personal consultation is better. I don’t recommend hair transplantation as the first option to solve your balding problem. First, you would have to be evaluated to map out your hair loss as it progresses by determining the degree of miniaturization that is in every part of your scalp. Then, providing you are a male, I would likely have you on Propecia for a year or so, then reassess the miniaturization and your observable pattern of hair loss (if any) or reversal of hair loss. From there, transplantation might be right for you, but only an in-person evaluation will be able to determine this. At 23, generally you should first try drugs like minoxidil and finasteride for a year. I have seen reversal with this drugs in men of your age. You can add microneedling as well to increase the probability of getting your hair back. If you don’t respond to the drugs, then a hair transplant may be proper depending upon many factors that you and your surgeon will work out. Depending upon your hair thickness and donor density in conjunction with your end balding pattern, decisions can be make properly. Make sure that you get a Personalized Master Plan from your doctor and an estimate of your worst case balding pattern before you get a hair transplant

I don’t see the results from 3000 grafts suggesting a failure of the grafts to grow. The number one cause of this is a technical failure of the team performing the surgery. If you went to a good doctor, go back and discuss this with that doctor. If you purchased on price alone and the doctor is unavailable, the number one problem is that you have depleted your precious donor hair and may have hit the limit to FUEs done for the donor area having to switch to a strip surgery, so in that case, you need to see a real expert in this field?

1000 hairs lost last night
I have been on finasteride for 2 years but today suddenly in the shower my hair started coming out in clumps. I’ve lost so much density, I bet more than 1000 hair went down the drain and additional hundred more when I was drying it. This includes the back and the sides of my head. I am panicking so much because when I started I only had mild temple recession with no hair loss anywhere else , and now this happened.
How old are you? If you are young, maybe you started to accelerate your balding genetics. This can happen if you are unusually stressed. Does that apply to you? if you are very worried, see a dermatologist of a hair specialist like me if yu in Southern California.

i have seen your ht results. truly fantastic. congrats.now my problem is my dad’s bald but none of his brothers (4) are bald. i have had a big forehead and recession in temples from childhood which is hereditary even for my uncles. so i dont know whether i will have hairloss in future? i am 19 years old (nw 2) now. what shall i do?

At the age of 19 and a Class 2 Norwood scale balding, you are not a candidate for surgery. If you are really balding, then you will have the appearance of miniaturization in the hair on your head. In that case, the drug finasteride is the best way to stop the balding problem in men who are balding in the earliest stage. Get a good doctor to review your personal situation and please do not have a surgery under any circumstances.
I’ve been getting a lot of similar emails from teens that want to take medication before they need to, or want me to tell them if they’re going bald based on 2 sentences they email to me. I’m going to make this as easy as possible for everyone to digest, and there’s no better way than an itemized list…
- You have a family history of hair loss, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you will experience loss to the same degree or at all. It can skip generations.
- Some refer to the corners of the hairline as the temples. Corner recession could be the maturing of the hairline. Recession of the actual temples will usually not see benefit from medication and surgery will likely be required to restore them.
- I can’t tell you when you should start on Propecia (finasteride), as it is a prescription medication and therefore must be prescribed by your physician. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t take medication as a preventive medication against hair loss anyway. Everyone is different, and some men will need the medication at 18 years old, while others will need it at 35. It depends on when you’re experiencing miniaturization and to what degree. A 25 year old man already showing thinning in the Norwood Class 7 pattern will not benefit from Propecia unless it is caught early and still it may not do much more than stop the loss from occurring.
- Propecia side effects are real, but they are also quite rare. Internet reports are unverified and overblown (some people will post the same basic negative messages over and over under different usernames across different sites). The major health concerns that you brought up (prostate and breast cancer) are worth considering, but more information needs to be collected. Studies into these types of issues might have been minimal, but the FDA lists the medication as safe and effective, and I’ve seen the effectiveness first hand (and have posted many photo results on this site).
- Get a good, caring doctor who has an interest in hair loss. Most often they build their expertise in the surgery of hair transplants, but there are many good doctors who care enough about their patients that they will not be trigger happy and rush you into a surgery before you are ready. 13 Year Old’s Crown Hair is Shorter Than the Rest of the Scalp
the hair in my crown area is short, not bald but shorter than the rest of my hair. everything else is fine. im only 13 and i dont want to be bald, especially at this age.
is there something wrong with me? and if there is how can i fix it?
I have yet to see a healthy 13 year old bald young man, but I can’t say if there’s something wrong with you. We haven’t established whether what you’re seeing is actually even hair loss. Perhaps you had a bad hair cut? Sometimes if you look at yourself in the mirror or woke up from sleep with bed-hair, your crown area can look thin. This does not mean you are balding. I’d give it some time and let the hair on your crown grow longer.
You should see a doctor for a mapping of your scalp and hopefully the examination will not show miniaturization in the crown. Get your parents involved and let them know what you’re going through. It could just be that you’re looking for something that isn’t there.
I’m Histamine Positive — Can I Speed Up the Elimination of the Redness After Surgery?

In the past, you have stated that post-op redness in the recipient area will linger longer in individuals that are histamine positive. I have very fair skin, and I am histamine positive based on the scratch test. Currently, I am 5 months out from surgery, which consisted of dense packing 3000 grafts in the front third of my scalp.
What do you recommend to speed up the process in order to eliminate the lingering pinkness that I am still experiencing? I have also put a call into my surgeon for his opinion, but would definitely like to have your opinion as well.

The use of limited amounts of hydrocortisone cream may help, but long term use is not healthy. I am hesitant to make specific recommendations to you as I have not seen you and therefore cannot make a judgment for you. My general approach is to point a direction on what to do, but hopefully you will get to your doctor for specific advice appropriate for your needs.
