I Only Lose Hair in the Winter Months — Is it a Skin Condition?

Hello,
I am a 20 year old African American who has experienced some hair loss for the last two years. There is no history of male pattern baldness on either side of my family so im pretty confident its not genetic. I noticed I only lose hair during the winter months, but the loss is significant. I believe it is related to a skin condition I have. My mother said it happened to me when I lost hair when I was a few weeks old, but it came back when she moisturized my scalp.

My questions: can it be due to the same condition? Is the loss permanent? Is there anything I can do to regrow my hair?

Thank you

On occasion, I have heard that a rare cycling of hair loss occurs when the weather gets colder. A possible skin condition that causes hair loss in winter months doesn’t make much sense to me. This isn’t something I’m familiar with, so I don’t know if the loss is permanent or if there is a treatment for it. Have you seen a doctor?

I Saw My Hairline Recede After Less Than 2 Weeks on Prednisone!

This past February I was prescribed a two week cycle of Prednisone to address a headache that would not go away. Though it was successful in treating the headache, I noticed my hair line receding at my temples after about a week and a half. I was finished with the Predisone just a few days later, but my hair has not come back after 5 months. I believe it may have even receded further.

I do not appear to have any hair loss on my crown, nor have I noticed any shedding on my pillow or in the shower. I have relatively fine hair, cut short at that, so it’s possible any shedding may go unnoticed. Should I wait to see if my hairline naturally restores itself, or should I try a Minoxidil product? Is it worth it to speak to a hair transplant doctor, or is that getting ahead of myself?

Corticosteroids (like prednisone) can accelerate hair loss in some, but I can’t say for sure if that is what you’re experiencing. You should get your mapped out for miniaturization (or learn how to map it yourself). You will probably find out that you have genetic balding and might want to see a doctor for a possible finasteride prescription. Minoxidil likely won’t regrow any hair in the hairline, and I don’t know enough about your hair loss pattern, age, or history to know if a hair transplant is in the cards for you at the present.

I Stopped Propecia Months Ago — How Long Until My Libido Returns?

hi. i took propecia for about 1-2 months. I suffered from a loss of libido and stopped taking it during the end of May. Its now mid August and my libido has not returned. Do I need to wait longer?

Propecia (finasteride 1mg) has a very short half life (about 4 hours), which means it would be almost completely out of your blood stream in one day. There are reported tissue binding that occurs, but that should be gone in a week or so.

Sexual side effects (decreased sex drive) associated with Propecia are relatively exaggerated and it occurs only in about 1% of men. If you continue to experience negative sexual effects after of month of discontinuing Propecia you should consider other underlying medical problems. Keep in mind that erectile dysfunction is a largely underappreciated and unreported medical condition.

Erectile dysfunction statistics:

  • One in 10 men in the world have erectile dysfunction (10%) and it rises with age (30% of men in their 30s, 40% of men in their 40s and 50+% of men over 50).
  • 30 million men in the United States have erectile dysfunction.
  • 50% of men with diabetes have erectile dysfunction, frequently within 10 years of diagnosis.
  • Smokers have a higher likelihood of erectile dysfunction as well as men with high blood pressure (with or without treatment), diabetes, etc… Men who smoke more than 1 pack per day have a 50% higher chance of impotency than nonsmokers the same age.

I Think I Am Going Bald

Hello,
I am a 21 year old male who seems to be having rapid hair loss. My hair has always been very thick and within the last 8 months my hair just began been falling out. My hair is beginning to become very thin and noticeable. I can run my hand through my hair and have 20-30 hairs in my hand. Both sides of my family still have alot of hair. I am just wondering if it is just genetics or maybe because of a desease. What do you think I should ask my doctor???

It is normal to lose up to 100 hairs per day. You can quantify it by collecting the hairs in a bag for 24 hrs and then counting them, but unless you stay home and follow yourself around catching every hair that comes out, you will not get them all. We generally lose hair with the wind and just walking around doing the normal things people do. To better evaluate for your hair loss, you should have your hair mapped out for miniaturization to get a diagnosis in hand. Don’t panic quite yet, but be smart on what you do now.

I’m Worried About My DHT Levels with heavy exercise

I wana go back to the gym. Im 3.5 month on fin with super awesome results. I talked with my friend about it he said when u start to lift ur body produce more Test. More Test mean more dht even on fin. So how do i go back to gym?

Don’t worry about DHT when you lift weights. Just work out. The finasteride will hopefully take care of your hair loss and your work-out will not raise your DHT levels, causing more hair loss.

I Want to Transplant a Slight Widow’s Peak to Frame My Face

I am 29 with a stable NW 2 after taking Propecia for a year now. I’ve always had a high forehead and have always wondered if it is possible to have a small hair transplant to create a slight V in the middle of my hairline like Keanu Reeves, Leonardo Dicaprio or Johnny Depp. I feel like if you took that part of their hairline away, their hair wouldn’t frame their face right and I feel like if I had that bit of hair there, it would frame my face better.

The slight V you’re talking about is a widow’s peak.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the expression goes. If someone wants a different hairline, that is what we do. This is cosmetic surgery, after all. Meet with a hair transplant surgeon to go over your options.

I Was Disappointed With My Doctor With My Surgery. What Do you Think My Results Will Be?

Had, what I feel was very successful strip surgery graft to frontal area at beginning of year. Full natural hairline . In light of this, pursued transplant to crown at different center (for geographical/practical reasons) Was disappointed that rather than 1,500 or so grafts promised only 900 were done. Reason given was lack of scalp laxity. Multi unit hair grafts were used for a total of 4,500 hairs. Crown area is question was about 14 sq in (35 sq cm) My hair is somewhat coarse, not particularly fine. I’m not fair skinned. Was interested in your opinion as to what your best guess would be in terms of final density.

math

I am not here to “guess”. You have specific numbers and it is merely about doing the math.

It is worrisome how 900 grafts will total 4500 hairs. This equals 5 hairs per graft. This is highly suspicious since most people have an average of 2 hairs per graft.

Your 900 grafts in a 35 sq cm equals 26 grafts per sq cm. If you really have 4500 hairs in a 35 sq cm that would be 129 hairs per sq cm.

An average non balding scalp may have 100 grafts (200 hairs) per sq cm.

If you had a successful surgery with one doctor and had a disappointing experience with the second doctor, maybe you should follow up with the first doctor.

Ibuprofen to Prevent Shock Loss?

Since shock loss is caused by inflamation and swelling, do you think ibuprofen (600 – 800 mg doses) could be as effective at preventing shock loss as propecia?

Do you think that there is any adverse interaction between ibuprofen and propecia? Thanks.

There is no connection between ibuprofen and preventing shock loss after hair transplantation. To my knowledge there is no connection between Propecia and ibuprofen either.
