Dutasteride is like Finasteride. They are both DHT blockers. The results from Dutasteride should parallel Finasteride.

Dutasteride is not FDA approved for safety in use for hair loss. There are known reports that Dutasteride has caused sterility in some men, maybe rare, but we don’t really know how common it is.

Hi, I just had a quick question.

My dad started to bald somewhere between 18-19 and was nearly all the way bald by 20. My paternal grandfather is also bald. My mom’s side however has all of their hair, including my maternal grandfather. I’m 18 now and my hair color is much different than what my dad’s was at his age, his was auburn, mine is dark brown. It’s also still incredibly thick. I also seem to have the same soft hair as my mom but not fine hair or anything.

So my question is, will I go bald and if I do, will it start soon?

Hair color and balding are not linked. Just based on an email, I have no way to know if or when you’ll go bald. You’ll need to meet with a doctor for a miniaturization examination of your scalp, along with follow-ups over time to see if there is indeed any thinning.

Yes, some people get changes in mood on finasteride. That is a problem for men with depression as it could exacerbate it.

When I wake up – I look in the mirror and it’s obvious that my hair is much thinner on one side of my head. I can create a big parting on this side because the hair is so thin and can’t do so if I try on the other side. I’m 27 and have slightly receded temples and the temple recession is slightly worse on this side but I don’t understand why it’s thin all the way to the back of my head on this side?

Is this common with male pattern baldness? My dad is bald but I have been quite stressed over the last year and don’t want to take propecia if it’s something other than MPB.

It is common to see more thinning on one side in cases of genetic male pattern baldness (MPB), but rest assured that the other side generally catches up. I do not know if you have MPB, but if you believe you are losing hair you should see a doctor and get a diagnosis.

You should wait until all of the crusting (scabs) are off and the recipient site has healed before using your turban.

If I were your doctor, there would be no crusts because we give our patients hair washes after surgery, so you would be cleared to use a Turban in 10 days without any crusting.

hi. I would be most grateful if you could help me…My hair was pulled out 4 weeks ago. It hurt and bled a tiny bit. The bald area pretty much immediately grew (sparse) stubble, so I am assuming this will eventually regrow. However, the bald patch has increased in size (about half an inch forward and back), and the hair surrounding it still falls very easily.

Is it possible these hairs were disturbed in the follicle (a big handful of hair was pulled) or could there be an underlying problem? Or could this be a localised anagen effluvium (if this even exists). In the beginning the area and whole scalp ‘burned’ intermittently for about 3 wks although now just the ‘patch’ burns occasionally. I find if the surrounding area itches and I scratch thats normally when the hair comes out (1-8 hairs at a time). I have looked all over for an answer but I think this must be unusual which I find worrying.

If you are really worried, I’d have a doctor examine your scalp. I would expect, however, that if you wait up to 8 months, the problem will take care of itself. Generally, a one time hair pull will not result in permanent loss.

Perhaps the surrounding hairs became weakened after the hair was yanked out and that’s why you see loss in that area. Without seeing what you’re talking about, I am having a hard time understanding what you are describing.

That would not make sense to me. One or the other is the way to go. If the oral is working for you, don’t switch as the expense is considerably different.

(female) Ok first off, I’m almost seventeen. About a month and a half or so ago, most of the hairs on my eyebrow fell out. It’s only my left eyebrow though, which is strange. I haven’t used any sort of cream on my face or taken any medications except for the occasional ibuprofen which I’ve taken before with no problem. I think I have an idea, but I’m not sure. I got bangs before the eyebrow started falling out and when my bangs started to grow out, I just pushed them to the left. So is it possible that my bangs irritated the hairs, causing them to fall out? I’m not really sure. Since I thought of that, I’ve been trying to bobby pin them back lately because it’s summer and I’m home a lot, but take the bobby pin out when I leave the house because it’s embarrasing and my hair covers it. But they’re still not growing back. I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions?

It is very peculiar that only one side of your eyebrow has fallen out. I highly doubt it was due to your bangs brushing up on them. As it has only been a month, high magnification examination would show what stubble is left and what it looks like. I would be curious to know if you have experienced any specific patches of hair loss on your scalp or on your body. There is a relatively rare condition such as alopecia areata that can manifest in the manner that you are describing. You need to see your family doctor to make sure your thyroid is OK. The most common cause of eyebrow hair loss is when a person picks or plucks it. However it is almost impossible to give you a diagnosis without examining you in person.
