Tangled Hair From Styling Products Used to Cover Bald Spot

Dear Dr. Rassman,
First of all thank you for caring enough about all our concerns to have this blog. I’m writing to ask you about tangled hair. I have kept the top of my hair long for many years now to comb back and cover the balding crown but my hair is coarse and somewhat curly. For some reason when I shampooed I began being unable to wash out all the build up of gel and hairspray and it was difficult to comb through. At the beginning I used to force the issue and would pull out lots of hair. Now I’m much more gentle but its still frustrating to not be able to comb through. I’m afraid I’m damaging my hair more and more. What would you recommend? Any shampoos that could clean this build up? What about detanglers?I haven’t fared better with them either. On another note, several years ago I had a transplant which I believ was good. But I now am planning to have another and am certain you or your staff at NHI will do it. I received your materials in the mail (Thank you), I’ve heard about your excellent reputation from other sources also.I like that you’re not ONLY interested in the $$$ but you have a passion in an artistic sense as well as a humanitarian love. I’d see a good hair stylist with experience in African hair (they understand tangling and how to untangle the hair without pulling it out). It sounds like you need to get styling control on what you use and how you use it. Traction alopecia can occur with pulling on normal hair, but imagine if you can lose normal hair by pulling on it — what would happen to weak hair that is miniaturized from the genetic balding process? Bad news.

Gay man asks if Dutasteride shrinks the prostate

Will Dutasteride will shrink your prostate even if it’s NOT enlarged? Will it shrink a normal-sized prostate? If not, why not? I’m taking it for MPB, and as far as I’m aware, I have a normal-sized prostate… but I’m gay, and prostate stimulation is an important part of the pleasure of gay sex. So if Dutasteride does indeed shrink normal-sized prostates, you can see why I might be concerned. It wouldn’t stop me taking it, but I would like to know.

Dutasteride was developed to treat or often shrink the prostate when it is enlarged from prostatic hypertrophy-a problem in men over 50. I doubt it will have an effect on a normal size prostate.

Tegretol and Hair Loss?

My doctor is talking to me about putting me on Tegretol for anxiety. I asked him if this med causes hair loss and he told me he does not no any one had this from Tegratol but i think i read that it does. Can you tell me if you saw any people that came into you office that while taking this drug had any hair loss from it.

I have no memory of treating anyone that lost hair as a result of taking Tegretol (also known as carbamazepine, a seizure medication), but I’ve read claims online that it could be a rare side effect. It isn’t officially known as a side effect, however.

Genetics vs Medication Tug of War

Hello Dr. Rassman,

When a person’s genetics finally wins the tug of war against finasteride or/and minoxidil, will the hairloss then reassume in the form of a slow, steady process, or will the hair maintained by the drugs come off in large amounts within a short period of time?

The genetic progression of hair loss while on these medications (the “tug of war”) would likely be slow, in the order of months or years. It does not happen over a few days or weeks.

Temple Hair Transplant

Between the ages of 20-23 I went to an Norwood 2. Since the shedding of the hair at my temples, my hair has thickend elsewhere. Can a hair transplant be done just at the temples? Who could I contact for such a procedure?

What I am about to say relates to your age of 20-23. I would recommend first that you get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to determine the degree of the genetic hair loss that you have now and to get a good baseline for future reference. Then, based upon that examination (under the direction of a doctor), you may start on Propecia for your hair loss and take it for at least 8 months to 1 year and see if the temples return to the levels you want. Propecia may help regrow hair in the temple area. At the very least, it is worth an attempt. Beware of any person who would recommend surgery for you because he/she may not have your best interest in mind. I feel strongly that a trusting, supportive doctor-patient relationship is necessary in the hair restoration process. Girls In Haiti Orphanage Are Losing Hair

There is a wonderful ministry called “Love a Child” which has an orphange in the country of Haiti. The owner/manager of the orphanage is struggling to help several of her African American orphan girls who are suddenly suffering from hair loss. She has pictures of the girls on her site at loveachild.com

From reading various information on your website and others it seems the only options are:
1. Stop tight hair braids (but it’s too late now)
2. Costly hair implants

Any suggestions or advice you might have to help these precious children would be greatly appreciated.

From the photos in the link you provided, it seems the girls on the site have traction alopecia from wearing tight hair braids for long periods of time. Unfortunately, traction alopecia is permanent and there are no good treatment options. Hair transplantation surgery may help, but it cannot replace all the hair that was lost as even with a hair transplant, the supply of hair may exceed the demand for hair in the balding area.

You can have these beard grafts removed with FUE by using a large enough punch to remove the elevated skin along with the grafts. You might want the surgeon to put back the hair at the same time without the excess skin, so it will minimize the scar discoloration that would occur.

Testosterone By Itself Causes Hair Loss?

why don’t doctors ever mention that testosterone by its self can cause hairloss as well. I know its metabolite DHT is more potent at causing hairloss but we all know testosterone on its own can cause hairloss as well.

I mentioned this before, propecia increases testosterone by about roughly 15%. A persons front region/temple/hairline is more sensitive to testosterone and has more testosterone receptors.

Doctors always fail to mention that propecia has a possibility to accelerate hairline thinning. Yes it help the crown but at the expense of the hairline. For example if a person has mild hairloss, then by simply taking propecia it will jump start his hairline thinning.

I enjoy a good conspiracy as much as the next guy, but come on…

Doctors do not mention testosterone causing hair loss, because testosterone does not cause hair loss… except by its conversion to DHT. If the body has testosterone, it automatically has DHT. Genetics cause androgenic alopecia that is precipitated by DHT, and that is why finasteride works. It is not a hormone issue, it is a genetic issue. If you do not have the gene for hair loss, you can have all the testosterone or DHT or whatever hormone you want to blame and you will still have a full head of hair.

Also Propecia does not cause hair loss. It slows down hair loss. I can see why you think this, but your logic is flawed.
