I Just Saw a Bald Spot — Do I Observe It or Go Right to a Doctor?

I’ve only just noticed I have bald spot after someone mentioned it, it is in an awkward place to see in the mirror. The bald spot is only at the crown area and I haven’t noticed any other hair loss anywhere else. However I do think my hair has thinned recently (last year or so). Do you have any suggestions as to what I should do next -see a GP, observe for a few months etc.?

I’m only 21 years old and I’m quite self conscious now that I’ve had comments about it.

You can consider a visit to our office in Los Angeles if you’re local or planning a trip out this way (the consultation is free). Otherwise see a good doctor, perhaps your family doctor, who will be able to determine what you have and what you can do about it.

If you think it is the beginning of male pattern baldness, you certainly want to see about starting treatment early… but I don’t know what is causing your bald spot at this point. I often mention the Master Plan when considering future hair loss. Educate yourself.

I Met an Old Man That Had Estrogen Injected to Treat Stomach Cancer — Now He’s Got Hair!

Today i met a fascinating old man in his 80’s. We got talking and he remarked that being a builder for many years was stressful and then joked it made his hair turn grey. I replied “At least youve got your hair!, i dont think im gonna even gonna get to grey” (im a NW3 and have recently made and informed decision against Propecia after 6 months of intense research talking to 3 doctors.)

He then informed me that he was previously bald with a ring around his head,( sounds like a NW7). He got stomach cancer a few years ago and was forced to take estrogen. It sounded like it was a massive amount of estrogen and they put it straight into his stomach, he also said its about 1300 a pop and that he had it three times. The Doctor warned him that this treatment would either grow hair on his head or give him breasts.

His hair, now white was probably a Norwood 2. Just wondering if you could share some light on this fascinating story.

We know that estrogen protects women against hair loss and when they go through menopause, they lose their estrogen and many times their hair. I have been aware that estrogen may help in hair loss, but at what cost for the men (breast, libido, and feminization issues)?

I Quit Propecia 8 Months Ago and I’m Not Seeing Much Loss

i decided to quit propecia after a 1.5 years of medication. today its the 8th month without any dosage. after quitting from drug, i have lost my crown area hair but not much. i have still got no bald patches until this time. my maturing hairline, frontal area has no change but i feel a itchy feeling on my crown area. i feel like losing hair from there, other areas of my scalp feeling good; no dandruff etc.

my question is the propecia still blocks me from losing hair? im 22 now and im slowly losing hair from my crown area. its most likely to my maternal grandfather, maybe as same as him.

Stopping Propecia will cause you to lose any benefits you had from taking it. It sounds like the benefits were mainly in your crown. Please be aware that you will undergo the natural hair loss your genes have ‘planned’ for you. Do you really want to experience progressive hair loss? I warn men about short term thinking so it does appear that you have some time to think this through.

I Skipped 2 Weeks of Propecia — Did It Cause My Hair Loss?

Hey Doc, I have been on propecia for almost 2 years now, last summer marked my 1st full year on the drug. Last summer (late August) I missed 2 weeks of the pill and soon after realized that my crown got a bit balder. Now the crown has gotten a bit more balder – my question is, is there any way to tell whether the 2 weeks of missed dosage caused this or whether its just MPB taking its course?

There is no way to truly tell other than not having missed the drug (and comparing the results to the you in an alternate universe that never missed a dose). In other words, it just isn’t possible to tell if that 2 weeks made a difference. I would doubt that you’d notice hair loss so soon after stopping the drug, but I’m not sure how long “soon after” was. If you’re talking months, then it is possible.

You might want to consider adding Rogaine Foam (or any minoxidil 5%) to see if that makes a difference in the crown. Perhaps Propecia is slowing the loss and minoxidil could regrow some.

You switch recently from Proscar divided into quarters to the generic one mg finasteride and saw an immediate effect suggesting that the genetic had something wrong with it. I suggested that you switch to the brand name Proscar and the divide it into quarters. That will get rid of the genetic variability

I Think My Ex Is Putting Nair in My Shampoo!

Thank you for your time. I am a 33 year old male and I have used propecia for some time now and my hair loss has been minimal up until the last few months. I have good reason to believe that my ex-girlfriend has been putting nair in my shampoo, conditioner, or styling paste. It has changed in texture and I am losing it in patches and generally all over my scalp. If this is the case then is the damage permanent or will it grow back? Also, what can I do to repair my hair?

Yes, if that suspicion is true then it will grow back, provided the assault stops. You might want to have a serious discussion with your ex or threaten to take legal action against her. Or at the very least buy new shampoo, conditioner, and hair product…

I Urinate Frequently When Taking Propecia

After taking a propecia tablet. I urinate frequently. It seems I can’t control my bladder. This may seem like a strange thing to say but my penis looks smaller. Almost as if it is shrinking. I can’t get erect because I feelnothing. Should I stop propecia?

Let me get this straight:

  1. You cannot control you bladder.
  2. Your penis is shrinking.
  3. You cannot get an erection.
  4. You cannot feel your penis.

I would be at my doctor’s office now if these were my complaints!

If you are noticing increased urinary frequency (polyuria), you may have other serious medical conditions such as diabetes which can also produce neuropathies that can change your feelings from sensory nerves. You should definitely follow-up with your primary care doctor or the doctor who prescribed you the drug Propecia. I have never heard of a shrinking penis caused by Propecia nor any of the other symptoms you mentioned in combination.

The “take home message” is you need to go SEE a medical doctor.

I Want My Head to Always Have a 5 O’Clock Shadow of Hair

Heres one for you: I wouldnt mind a shaved head if the shadow of existing thick hair wasnt so obvious around the donor areas. It’s like the top is your normal face color, and the donor areas white with potential hair. The shadow where hair grows is just so noticeable. My question is: is there a procedure where you can have implanted just tiny hairs as in a shadow over your balding? So it looks like you only shave your head?

I suppose you can tattoo your bald area, but that’s not the recommended route. I have seen it done in a few patients with reasonable results, but they have done this because of some deforming surgery they had from older hair transplant techniques many years earlier. Alternatively, you can air spray the balding area to develop a subtle shadow. If you’re looking to transplant a “5 o’clock shadow” look to your head (like the facial hair style that became popular in the 1980s), it’s really not going to be possible without having visible scarring to some degree (even if minor from FUE) in the donor area.

In other words, to answer your question — no.

I Want to Start Finasteride (I’m 22) and Am Worried About My Beard Growth

My colleague Dr. Robert Bernstein states: “As you suggest, it would be reasonable to assume that since DHT stimulates beard growth, blocking DHT (with finasteride) would tend to inhibit its growth. In practice, this does not seem to be the case, i.e. we don’t find that Propecia has any effect on facial hair. The reason is not clear.”

I have not seen this complaint in young men either, just as stated by Dr. Bernstein.

I Was Born with a Bald Spot and Want to Cure It

I’m 34 yrs. old and I was born with a scar on my head I had surgery and as I grew older it turn into a bald spot and hair never grew. Is there any cure for any type of bald spots?

Surgery would probably be your only solution. There’s no cure for bald spots or hair loss, and if you never had hair in this spot you likely won’t get it to regrow from medication use.
