Bell’s Palsy and Hair Loss?
Hi doc, i have had a case of Bells Palsy due to extreme stress 1 year ago. After that experience i have had my hairline on the RIGHT recede. Is this due to Bells Palsy? does it have any connection with hairloss? Or is it because im constantly stressing about my condition of Bells Palsys? i have yet to recover 100%. I am about 85% and this is as far as will ever recover. Also the Bells Palsys affected my right side of my face. Please, any help would be great help as i am only 23 living day to day to try and hide my hairline. thank you doc.
Bell’s palsy is probably a viral condition. Extreme stress can cause acceleration of genetic hair loss, so that is how these two conditions are probably linked.

Minoxidil Ruined My Hair Texture, So I Switched to Saw Palmetto
Is saw palmetto a good enough option compared to minoxidil?? Minoxidil preparation comes with isopropyl alcohol base. Alcohol causes scalp dryness and that increases hair fall which nullifies the effect of minoxidil. I am using topical application containing saw palmetto in form of a hair oil..also saw palmetto capsules orally. Initially for about 2-3 months my hair texture improved, but now somehow hair fall is accelerated.
I’m just 22yrs old and i’m afraid at my present rate of hair loss i may become bald very shortly. Is saw palmetto of any help to me?? i switched over to it because minoxidil ruined my hair texture. please help !!!
I think that you have to read more on this blog and even visit our newhair.com site to learn what hair loss is about. Saw palmetto has no value whatsoever for treating hair loss. It will definitely allow you to complete the balding process if that remains your main baldness treatment.
There are people that claim saw palmetto is a worthwhile hair loss treatment, but you won’t find me amongst them. There has never been any good scientific study to prove the claims people make.
Even minoxidil isn’t the best treatment for a young man with early loss like you describe, because it doesn’t block the DHT. I implore you to see a competent doctor who will address your problem.

Bleached Hair at 16 and It Has Never Been the Same
(female) I am losing my hair and have been since I was 16 I am 22 now and I dont see any improvement in the matter. I bleached my hair at 16 and while the bleach was in my hair I was reading the package and noticed that it said for salon use only. I ran to the sink to wash it out and as the bleach came out handfuls of hairs did too. Being a 16 year old girl I ran to my hairdresser and she said no they probably werent falling out just breaking off. But through the years they have never came back. This has a major effect on my life, my marriage, and any activities that I do. I think about it all of the time and I dont know what to do. If you have any suggestions as of shampoos, surgerys anything… I am willing to do anything to get my hair back as well as my confidence in myself and my life. Thank you
It sounds like you may have chemically damaged your hair and considering the time you have seen no benefit, I doubt that the hair will return to your original 16 year old quality. The treatment of your hair today will have to be with conventional cosmetics, conditioners, and gels that thicken the hair shafts. You will probably be better of as a blonde (assuming you are Caucasian). At this time, there are no proven medications that I know if which you can take to change your hair character.

More Insights on Prostaglandin D2 and the Possible Hair Cure
In the article recently published in Science Translational Medicine, it was shown that the enzyme prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) was elevated in bald scalps at the mRNA and protein levels.
In a group of 17 men, bald scalp was compared with haired scalp and showed elevated PGD2 levels. The authors also found that PGD2 and a related metabolite 15-dPGJ2 inhibited hair growth in both mice and men, providing insights into the prostaglandin pathway in genetic balding. They found a receptor in the bald scalp which is responsible for mediating the negative effects of PGD2, suggesting that therapeutic drug targets could be developed for a possible topical treatment. They have determined that this receptor may impact the hair characteristics (i.e. straight or curly).

Unfortunately, baldness is not caused by a single factor but rather multiple ones. The most important and well-known one is the correlation of balding with a male hormone called dihydrotestosterone (which is a byproduct of the more well-known testosterone). Specifically, we have known for many years that you cannot develop MPB unless you have an excess production of that hormone in the affected areas. Yet, many years later, we still do not have a “cure†for everybody’s baldness either in terms of stopping the progression in everybody or regrowing hair in everybody though anti-dihydrotestosterone drugs such as finasteride (Propecia) and Dutasteride certainly help many people with male pattern baldness (MPB) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL)—to varying degrees.
Dr. Garza’s and Dr. Cotsarelis’s announcement of the role of another factor, Prostaglandin D2 synthase, appears to represent another building block towards the ultimate goal of medical treatment of MPB and perhaps FPHL. However, we have no idea as yet, if it is, for example, more or less important than dihydrotestosterone or any other of the substances already implicated in MPB and FPHL. Unfortunately, despite the media frenzy, “the end of baldness†likely remains well down the road.
