Can Propecia Help Minoxidil Dependent Hair?

Doc,

You recently answered a question that perhaps I didn’t ask right about using Minoxidil for many years and the benefit on adding Propecia. I’d like to try again, because I think the answer is important. If you have used minoxidil for many years most hair subject to miniaturization would be minox dependent. Would that be a correct assumption? If so what is the benefit of adding Propecia to minoxidil dependent hair.. which after many years would be most miniaturized hair. Wouldn’t it be too late at that point since the hair Propecia might have helped are already minox dependent?

And since minoxidil is for life I assume any future miniaturized hair would become minoxidil dependent too. So what is propecia going to do at this point? I hope I was more clear this time.

There is no way to answer this question appropriately without a controlled clinical study on this specific situation (those that start finasteride years after minoxidil dependence). That study doesn’t exist as far as I am aware.

New Shampoo Causing Thinning in Teen?

I am a 16 year old male and I’ve been noticing since about a week or two ago I’ve started losing much more hair than usual. When I take a shower, a lot more hair collects on the drain than ever used to before and when I comb my hair at least 10 hairs fall out. I’ve always had very thick and strong hair and it’s worrying me. I also notice that each hair that’s falling out is very thin and weak-looking. I have been using Head and Shoulders Intensive Care for a couple months now. Do you think it could be the cause?

ShampooI doubt that the shampoo causes your hair loss, but the underlying factors that make people use the shampoo may do that. Head and Shoulders shampoo is used for seborrheic dermatitis, which is an inflammatory disorder of the skin. This condition can possibly initiate hair loss or accelerate the loss due to the other causes.

Can Rogaine On Healthy Hair Cause it to Fall Out?

Thanks so much for this resource! I am 3 weeks post op from a HT of 4200 units. I was on propecia for 30 days prior to HT and began Rogaine / Minoxidil 2 weeks post op. I had temple work and work at the front of my hairline. I want to get the best result and minimize shock loss. I have heard Rogaine can cause shedding. Am I at risk for shedding in healthy hair zones if I apply Rogaine in it’s correct dosage to the entire top of my head, temples and along the donor scar?

Rogaine (minoxidil) on healthy hair most likely will not cause shedding, but I would strongly suggest that it only should be applied to areas of concern and not the rest of the head for two key reasons:

  1. Cost
  2. Side effects (or potential thereof) will occur as the area of treated skin increases

It is also worth noting that minoxidil will not influence the hair transplants to grow any better or any faster.

Nicotine Patch and Finasteride?

I have a few questions. I started taking propecia in July 2010 and a few months ago switched to the generic 5mg finasteride (cut in 1/4s).

1. Is it ok to use a nicotine patch while I’m taking finasteride?
2. My doctor recently suggested I start using rogaine 5% in addition to finasteride. I would like to keep what hair I have and regrow some if possible, but I have read alot about shedding which makes me nervous. I know the shed hair should regrow but it still gets me worried. How prevalent is shedding in your experience with patients you’ve recommended rogaine to?
3. Also, out of curiousity, what NW pattern are you?

1. A nicotine patch can be worn while you take finasteride. I don’t know of any contraindication.

2. Hair shedding after starting Rogaine happens, but not very frequently in the patients who I have seen that use it. The good news is that the shedding doesn’t last forever and rarely, if ever, produces permanent hair loss.

3. I was a Norwood Class 3 Vertex (3V) without the frontal component, making my hair loss purely in the crown.

Can Stress Cause a Child’s Hair to Stop Growing?

My 4 year old has blonde hair and in the last year I have noticed that the hair on her left side has seemed to stop growing. It appears to have a different texture and feel to it and i often notice in the morning after she sleeps that it is pushed forward, but it doesn’t seem to go back easily. On that side of her head she seems to have more broken ends and shorter pieces. Is this a concern? In the last year and half we have moved and she had a brother born with a Congenital heart defect with a lot of needs in the beginning of his life, could it be stress?

I would not look at stress as the cause of your daughter’s hair loss/abnormal hair growth. See a good doctor, possibly a pediatric dermatologist if you are in a big city where such a specialty may be found.

Can I Transplant Body Hair and Neck Hair Into My FUE Scars?

If you try filling in FUE scars with more hair transplants from the thigh, body, or neck, you will be subject to the limitations of these donor sites. The neck hair is not permanent hair. Additionally, all body hair below the neck has a short growth cycle, and only half of the hairs will be growing at any one time. Filling in FUE scars can be very expensive and not very effective. In my opinion, SMP is the best option.

Normally I am thinner on the top than the back

Regarding the HAIRCHECK test. It says that you take the permanent area as the base to compare. What if the top of an individual has always been thinner compared to the permanent areas? Then how reliable could you call the test?

I believe that people with fine hair often seem to be thinner on top, but it can be an illusion. I have measured many people with the HAIRCHECK instrument and those that are not balding always have the same readings on the instrument showing no balding present

Can you comb too hard?

This is a good and important question. People who have early miniaturized hairs can pull them out with rough combing or brushing. When you brush, use a coarse hair brush with wide spacing so you don’t pull on your hair.

Not Hair Loss News – Carrots Can Reduce Prostate Cancer Risk?

Scientists have found that regularly eating the brightly-coloured vegetables appears to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by almost a fifth. Men who included carrots as part of their regular diet, eating them at least three times a week, were 18 per cent less likely to develop a prostate tumour, according to findings published in the latest European Journal of Nutrition.

The study, by scientists at Zhejiang University in China, pulled together the results of ten smaller studies from different parts of the world looking at the anti-cancer effects of carrots. This type of research, called a meta-analysis, is performed when findings from lots of studies with small numbers of patients produce conflicting findings.
