Value to Saw Palmetto in preventing hair loss?

I have recently started oral minxodil, are there any adverse effects to combining saw palmetto and OM? Would I see no change or could I possibly see improvement with them in tandem?

Saw Palmetto has no value as a DHT blocker and, thus, in preventing hair loss.

This patient had a hair line advancement surgery to move her hair line down. It will require hair transplanted grafts to bury this scar, so it will not be seen.

Vitamin A Poisoning?

Hi,

I am a 21 year old male, and I’ve had a very healthy scalp and a full head of hair, until this month. I started taking multivitamins, which contain what I now see as too much Vitamin A (10,000 IU; my weight is low, so that dose is high for me, I weigh 57kg).

There is now a small bald spot (about 1.5in diameter) on the back of my head, and its onset was sudden enough that I do not think this is male pattern baldness. My hairline has not begun to recede.

I’ve stopped taking the pills today, as I’m quite sure the excess Vitamin A is the cause of this, but I would like to ask you if I am right about this.

Also, in the event that this was Vitamin A poisoning, can you tell me if it’s possible for my hair to start growing in that bald spot again? I’m worried this might be permanent.

Thank you for your time.

Hair loss is seen in both vitamin A deficiency, and vitamin A excess. I think you are right about the fact that your hair loss could be related to overuse of vitamin A. It is good that you stopped taking the pills. You may want to use other multivitamin pills with lower doses of vitamins A in the future or the ones without vitamin A. The hair loss is usually reversible and disappears with discontinuing the medication but one always must be aware that anything that causes hair loss can ‘flip the genetic switch’ and it may not be reversible. Give it a few months and your hair will hopefully grow back if you don’t have any other underlying causes.

Hairs that fall out are narrower at the base

If most of the hair that falls out is noticeably thinner at the base than it is on the end, does this most likely mean that many of my follicles are miniaturizing or is this just the natural hair process and likely nothing to be too concerned about?

Yes, as hairs become more and more miniaturized, as they grow they become thinner and thinner so if and when they fall out, the base will be the thinnest part of the hair shaft

I want to have an FUE and save money. What about going to Mexico or Turkey, is it safe?

Going out of the country for an FUE is not a great idea. The results may not be predictable, there is no accountability for the doctor and the risks of anesthesia may be significant in the wrong hands. Deaths have even happened, even in the US. We have been doing FUE longer than anyone in the world, having invented the FUE procedure and the hair transplant robot. Experience counts. Was my hair transplant within the permanent zone of my donor area? (photo)

No, the donor area that was taken extended above and below your permanent zone. I marked the area on the back of the head that is about 2.5 – 3 inches high which is the permanent zone, viewed from the back of the head. This same 2.5 inch high area extends around the head above the ears to the temple points. If your balding pattern extends down to the area where it was harvested outside the permanent zone, these hairs will fall out and die. Also, if you should lose neck hair as you get older (frequently seen in men) then these hairs will also fall out and die when this happens with your neck hairs. The purpose of a hair transplant is to move permanent hairs to the areas of balding so that they will live as long as you live.
