Thyronorm and Female Hair Loss?

Hello Doctor,
I am 23 year old female and have been losing about 100 hair everyday. I had undergone a thyroid goitre surgery when I was 20 years i.e in 2004 and had lost tremendous amount of hair then due to hormonal imbalance. I have been taking Thyronorm ever since to supplement hormones. After that my hair loss reduced a little bit but never stopped. I have noticed and increase in my hair loss since past 10 months. I got my thyroid tested 8 months ago and it was normal.

I have also started taking iron pills since past one month. I am extremely worried about my situation and don’t understand what I can do. I have heard that there are certain oils in hair that make hair follicles really small and hair never grows back. Is that true? Are there any tests that I can perform to figure out the actual reason for the loss? what medication would you recommend me in my case?

It is normal to lose around 100+ hairs a day, as about 100 hairs per day are regrown to balance the loss. Medical conditions such as thyroid problems and iron deficiencies are associated with hair loss, but it can still persist despite adequate treatment. There is only one medication FDA approved for treating women with hair loss — minoxidil (marketed as Rogaine).

To my knowledge, the impact of hormones on the size of the hair follicles below the skin has not been demonstrated and that includes oils that are either applied by you or internal to your skin.

Hair Continued Thinning After Hair Transplant, Now I Want to Undo It All

Dr. Rassman,

I had a transplant procedure 7 or so years ago. Since then, my hair has continued to thin and even though the hairline was done well, one can discern that they are transplants. If I was to have the donor scar repaired and buzz my head to a # 1 clipper, would the transplant sites be very discernable (on top of my head?) If I was to pluck them out, would the recipient sites have scars? I am not really sure what to do. If I hadn’t gotten the procedure done I would probably shave my head close. I would also like to know if I had additional procedures done, would I be able to go with a buzz (#1) cut? Thank You

A hair transplant is forever, which means you shouldn’t do it unless you fully understand what is going to happen to you, even in the worst case scenario. I don’t know how to answer your question without seeing you. If the transplants were follicular unit transplants (FUTs), there is a good possibility you could shave the hairline, but based upon the what you describe, I suspect that the grafts were not follicular units. When there is any significant amount of skin in the transplanted graft, the skin will have some deformities associated with it. The larger the amounts of skin (which comes with procedures like minigrafts, micrografts, larger plugs, follicular families, double follicular units, etc), the harder it would be to get away with shaving the frontal scalp. Most people like you are easy to fix with more transplants, but it has to be done with FUTs and in enough numbers to fill in the problem area, but again I can not say this for sure without seeing you or your photos.

Today’s Man – How Much is Enough Hair?

Part 1 of “How Much is Enough Hair?” showcased a patient in his mid-20s. The patient below in part 2 is in his mid-50s and achieved wonderful results.

The change in my appearance in just 8 months has been remarkable. From a balding man that I hated to look at in the mirror, to a younger man who looks like he has a full head of hair has changed my life. My friends can’t get over it and even though everyone knows that I have had a hair transplant, no one believes it when they look at me. The back of my head is still bald. Can I expect to fill that in as well?

I loved seeing you the other day. Every time I see one of our patients with the right hair and skin color and the right hair texture, I feel that the work we do in restoring hair is almost like God’s work. Another session will probably suffice to fill in the back and when done in combination with some styling effort, you will look like a man with a full head of hair. I recommend another 3000 or so grafts be placed into your crown. Thanks for allowing me to use you questions and picture for my blog.

When looking at these pictures, please note that the hair line is not a line but an irregular zone of hair. It does not have a start point and you can not connect the dots. Note that behind this zone, the hair is thick and you can not see through it, while in the zone, the hair is subtle in its appearance and does not hit you like a wall when you look at it. There is a smooth transition from the forehead (without hair) to the thick lush hair sitting back about 1/2 inch behind the transition zone. That means that you can not tell that it is a transplanted hair line, just like mine or other normal people that do not bald.

Took Finasteride for Years And It Didn’t Stop My Hair Loss

I took finasteride 1mg for two years, and it did not stop my hair loss. Five weeks ago, I switched to dutasteride .5mg, and I am still seeing the same level of hair loss. What are some of the possible factors resulting in my continued hair loss? Might it have something to do with the DHT still residing in my scalp?

Also, how much of a decrease in DHT is generally required in the blood and/or scalp in order to stop hair loss?

Neither dutasteride or finasteride are guaranteed to stop the hair loss. There is a race between your genetics and your attempt to stop the loss and from what you are saying, your genes are winning. If you were to become a Norwood Class 5 balding pattern by the time you are 23 years old, for example, I would doubt that finasteride or dutasteride will stop the progression completely, but it may slow down the process a bit. Do you get what I am saying?

There is no magic DHT level that you must hit as your genes do not seem to care (metaphorically speaking). You are under the illusion that DHT can be controlled, but the issue is with your genes, not DHT levels. Certainly what you are reporting appears that way.

Every time I see a celebrity with a hairline like this, I realize how important hair is to a man’s appearance. Even this 50 year old coach is more youthful because of his hairline and his full head of hair. Hair Loss After Breast Implants?

In Jan. 03 I had saline breast implants and 4 months later my started falling out and to this day it still is. The dermatologist said it was AGA but my thinning is all over and my part is not get wider. Could it be chronic TE or something else? Please Help!

Unfortunately, I can not address your problem without seeing you. Surgeries produce stress and people with AGA can lose hair with stress. You can try to do the hair pull test on yourself. For information on telogen effluvium (TE), please see Wikipedia.

The Dermatologist told me I could take Rogaine for 4 years and I would keep almost all my hair for the rest of my life. I would even get better results when I use Finasteride with it. I’ve never heard about this 3/4 year cycle and then the hair loss magically stops, any idea what she meant? The appointment was very short, about 5 minutes.

Hair has a 3 year growth cycle. Drugs like finasteride impact both the length of this cycle as well as the quality of miniaturized hairs that are present during the growth cycle. Rogaine does not impact the growth cycle but does stimulate new hair growth in some people. For young men, finasteride is a better treatment for hair loss that minoxidil. It sounds like you did not get all of your questions answered.
