How Long Does Minoxidil Stay In My Body?

Dr. Rassman,
I have been taking 2% topical minoxidil since late December 2005. I have ALWAYS taken more than the recommended doses. I would estimate at first 2-3 times the amount, later on 4-5 times the amount. By mid March I noticed my sex drive was really low and and I had a harder time getting and maintaining an erection. I read online from the Mayo Clinic that too much absorption of topical minoxidil can lower sex drive and performance. I have stopped taking it for a week and sexually I’m better, but not quite normal. I also still have some heart palpitations. Could you please tell me when my body will “clear-out” the excess minoxidil?

Some drugs are metabolized fairly quickly, while others can take a long time before they are eliminated. We quantify this with the use of the term “half-life.” The half-life of a given medication is how long it takes for the body to get rid of half of the dose. When the patient is taking a medication on a regular basis, there is an ongoing process of drug absorption in the form of each dose of the drug and, concurrently, an ongoing process of drug removal with the drug’s metabolism and clearance. Eventually, there comes a point when the amount of drug going in is the same as the amount of drug getting taken out. We call this “steady state.” It takes somewhere between 5 and 6 half-lives for a medication to reach steady state. Thus, medications with short half-lives reach steady state relatively quickly, while those with long half-lives take a long time to reach steady state. Minoxidil has a blood half-life of about 4 hours, but I can not determine how long it hangs around the kidney, heart, or other organs when it is out of the blood. Most of the good studies are on oral administration of the drug for treatment of high blood pressure and here is what I read on RxList.com: “The extent and time-course of blood pressure reduction by minoxidil do not correspond closely to its concentration in plasma. After an effective single oral dose, blood pressure usually starts to decline within one-half hour, reaches a minimum between 2 and 3 hours and recovers at an arithmetically linear rate of about 30%/day. The total duration of effect is approximately 75 hours. When minoxidil is administered chronically, once or twice a day, the time required to achieve maximum effect on blood pressure with a given daily dose is inversely related to the size of the dose. Thus, maximum effect is achieved on 10 mg/day within 7 days, on 20 mg/day within 5 days, and on 40 mg/day within 3 days.” This may be more than you asked for.

If you have heart palpitations, you should be seeing a doctor about that. This is a worrysome problem, something that is far too important than to take it to a doctor like me who advises on general questions over the internet. Minoxidil may be out of your system by now and the fact that you are getting better is good, but having a heart problem needs prompt and proper medical treatment, so get it to see a doctor ASAP.

Whey Protein Isolate Causes Hair Loss?

Dr. Rassman,
I read where one dermatologist (who specializes in hairloss) claims that whey isolate protein causes hair loss but whey concentrate (cheaper, less refined) does not. How could that be? To my knowledge, protein supplements do not affect hormonal levels at all. Do you know of any reputable studies to that effect? I take a whey isolate protein that agrees well with my stomach and I do not want to give it up unless there is some truth to that. Thanks for this blog.

I would also agree and ask “how could it be?” I don’t know of studies that backup those claims. Perhaps astute BaldingBlog readers can point us in the right direction.

Did your specialist offer an explanation?

How long to wait for finasteride to work?

Man on here I only see „3 months progress fin/min“ and those guys always transform from nw6 to a full nw1. I am currently 3 months on fin about 5 on min and I am not sure if I have any results (diffuse thinning). Maybe I am shedding maybe not i dont even fking now anymore diffuse thinning your hair looks one day great and the next day like you are bald as fck. Just wanted some reasureance if anyone of you still saw great results afterwards bc I am becoming insane.

Many times, it takes up to a year to see the results from finasteride. Finasteride always works either by slowing, stopping, or reversing the hair loss. Be patient.

Why Am I Losing Hair Around My Belly?

ive had steady hair loss around my belly button hair area for about 2 years now, it just keeps getting thinner & continues on a steady pace. i dont care all that much about losing hair in that area, but my concern is the reason for it & will it spread to other areas? is this normal? thank you

Often the belly is an area that is rubbed by belts or articles of clothing. These can cause traction alopecia. Have you gained weight and increased your belly size?

How many grafts do I need?

The number of grafts depends upon two factors (1) the area that has to be covered which in your case is determined by where you wish the hairline to be placed and (2) the thickness of your hair shafts (hair bulk). The need for a second hair transplant is frequent when the hair bulk is low (fine hair) and less common as the hair shafts increase in thickness (medium or coarse hair) so it is difficult to give you an exact estimate other than to say that the range of grafts may be 1800-2500 grafts give or take a few

Why Can’t I Just Find a Donor to Give Me Hair and Take Medication?

Hello, I was wondering if it would be possible to transplant hair from the arms or legs (or other parts of the body) into the scalp. If not physically possible, than please state why?

Second question: If I had a willing donor, could I get hair grafts from him, and take organ-rejection medication for the rest of my life to stop the loss of these new hairs? I know these meds may cause hair loss but wouldn’ts till I come out ahead, keeping most of the donor-transplanted hairs?

Body hair transplants are possible, but the texture of the hair will be different and arm/leg hair doesn’t grow to the same length as scalp hair. So while it is possible, the results aren’t as natural looking in my opinion.

Person to person transplants are also possible with anti-rejection medication, but the health risks from those medications are too great. These anti-rejection meds are reserved for life saving transplant patients, not for cosmetic procedures. I can’t imagine any doctor willing to do this, knowing the patient’s health would be put at a tremendous risk.

How many grafts would it take to fix my hairline

I am 29 years-old and would like to bring my corner hairline down. How many grafts will it take?

The number of grafts used in a hair transplant is dependent on the characteristic of the hair (fine, medium or coarse). Fine hair need more grafts and coarser hair need less grafts. So I might quote you a range between 1200-1500 grafts but that would depend upon the final design of the hairline that we determine together. What I am seeing is a faint outline of small remaining hairs that is marking the hairline position. I am using this as my guide for my recommendation.

Why Do I Have a Patch of Thin Hair Above My Right Ear?

Dear Doc,
I have been experiencing hairloss for the past 8 months. I still have a good amount of hair it’s just become alot thinner. My problem is that on my right side about 4cm above my ear I have a patch that has gone extremely thin. It’s not bald but it looks as if someone has got a pair of clippers and shaved a chunk of my hair hair off – it looks rather odd. The other side is fine. Why do think this has happened? Thanks.

Some people have a different genetic trait in the area above the ears. It is usually on both sides and frequently present for a long time. There are a variety of hair conditions that can cause patchy hair loss or thinning. You need to see a good dermatologist for an examination and an opinion. You should also get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to see if this is happening in other parts of your scalp.

How much minoxidil to apply?

I’ve been on finasteride for half a year and I’ve just started topical minoxidil (regaine) about a week ago, I’ve been applying it on my temples because that’s where my hair is thinning and receding, I don’t have any hair loss on other parts of my head. I found that using a few drops on each side already covers the whole balding areas and using any more makes it wet and drip down my forehead, so is it fine to just use enough to cover those areas even if it’s less than 1mL? Thanks

You don’t have to flood your scalp. Using the liquid, put if on the scalp in small drops and rub it in. Do it best after a hot shower before you go to bed

Why does my hair transplant of yesterday, look like this?

These are elevated grafts (photo on the left). The surgeon that put them in used a Choi or Lyon Implanter and left the upper part of the graft sticking out. This is not the way I do it for many reasons including:

1- You have to wear a hat for weeks after the surgery and can’t be normal

2- It may leave cobblestonning of the skin as the skin from the grafts lived and may remain elevated

3- It is not undetectable short or long term. Look at my patient to the right of your picture which is one day after the hair transplant. No cobbled grafts seen.
