Is Missing Facial Hair a Side Effect of Rogaine?

I have been using Rogaine 5% topical solution regularly for about 6 years now. It has worked marvelously for preventing the thinning of my hair at the back of my head.

Just recently I noticed two large, circular patches on my chin and neck where facial hair no longer grows. I grow a goatee and didnt mind the two empty patches but now another small, circular patch has developed in my goatee area. Could this be a side effect of using Rogaine?

Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

I would worry more about alopecia areata or fungal infection as a cause, which require a good doctor to make the diagnosis. I would doubt that this is a side effect of Rogaine.

Is my hairline receding? (photo)

Your hairline appears to be just above the highest crease in your furrowed brow indicating that there is no recession at this time.

5500 Grafts in Indian Male

The average Indian has a lower density than a Caucasian of about 1.9 hairs/follicular unit (the Caucasian average is 2.2 hairs/follicular unit), so unless his hair is very coarse, his donor area is clearly depleted. He may find that he doesn’t have enough hair to cover the donor area. Additionally, this man’s FUE was taken outside the donor area. His entire remnant Class 6 pattern was harvested. If he develops a Class 7 pattern of balding, then he will lose more than half of the hairs transplanted.

Is Propecia Mandatory After Hair Transplant?

Hi,
I have looked into hair transplants time and again but have been scared off by the horror stories of bad HTs. FUEs sound good to me. Where do I go to get evaluated? I am losing hair in my temple areas and am 36 years old. Also, do I have to be on Propecia? I was on it for a year, didn’t see any results in hair but did notice problems with sexual activity (i.e. hard to keep an erection) I like it a lot better without it. So, if I had a HT, would I have to be on propecia?

You do not have to use Propecia after a hair transplant. However, by not using this drug you will not have any protection against the progressive nature of hair loss, assuming you are still losing hair and not totally bald. With regard to your sexual problems, almost 40% of men of your age have some difficulty maintaining an erection. One of the erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs can solve that. Taking Propecia for your hair and ED pills for your erection may give you both a better sex life and hair at the same time.

You indicated that you are based in Colorado. I would be happy to evaluate you for FUE, but my offices are in California. To find a FUE surgeon in your area, please visit ISHRS.org, but please note that there are not many of them out there that have the reputation and experience you may want.

6 months minoxidil and dermaroller (photo)

This is a terrific result. This shows that the use of minoxidil with the injuries created by the dermaroller and the healing that follows, produced these results.

Is the Alcohol Content in Rogaine Foam Bad for the Scalp?

I have been using rogaine foam for one month now and my hair has fallen out and is thinner then before I started…this getting scary! I do not understand the concept behind the shedding. How long is it suppose to last and could some people be allergic to the product? And what about the high alcohol content is that bad for the scalp? Dr Rassman do you believe it is worth trying for a longer period of time ?

Rogaine FoamSome people are sensitive or allergic to the non-active ingredient in Rogaine. I do not believe that a small alcohol content is bad for the scalp, but it can cause drying in some people and the minoxidil itself could be an irritant in others (or you could be one of the “lucky” ones and experience drying and irritation).

The shedding of hair while starting minoxidil may be due to the fact that the hairs undergo a “reset” cycle, as old hairs fall out to start a new growth cycle. This has not been medically proven, but is a generalized concept to explain why some men experience shedding when they first start using the medication for the first couple of months.
