Telogen Effluvium from Depakote, now 2 years later my hair is miniaturized.

I had drug induced TE from Depakote. I stopped the medication almost 2 years ago. My hair has grown back and I don’t have MPB. But my hair is miniaturized all over. Is it normal and permanent? Thanks.

If you are saying that the hair, when it came back, was of a smaller caliber, then this may be a permanent effect. I would have to see you and examine you with a trichoscope to understand the problem you pose

Gho Clinic Says Their FUE Allows the Donor Hair to Regrow?!

Dr. Rassman
i have stumbled upon a hair transplant clinic in Prague called the “GHO clinic” which offer a proprietary FUE in which apparently the donor hair will regrow (page here)

i don’t know how well the human body would repair a partially punched out hair follicle, i just want to ask if this procedure is actually hair multiplication available today or just someone trying to make his FUE look better than everyone else’s?

I just chaired the session at the annual ISHRS meeting in Amsterdam and had Dr. Coen Gho as one of the speakers. I had lost my voice, so I could not comment as the chair of that session, but considering that you asked me about him, I will use this as a forum to speak my opinion on what I heard.

Dr. Gho reported that he did 1500 patients with his “cloning” procedure. If I had to give a score to the material he presented using a 1-10 scale for scientific credibility, I’d score it a 1, with 1 being the lowest possible. His science was pathetic, with slides that were blurred and blackened out so that there was really nothing to see. He claimed that his FUE technique cut the follicular units in half longitudinally, and that the part that remained regrew hair, but there was no proof of this in any of the material he showed. He did not show any patient results and certainly was never reviewed by any credible agency or physician.

Partially divided follicles have been well studied by many prominent researchers. Despite their attempts, none succeed to create even an equal amount of hair (equal to the original divided follicular units). Dr. Kim (Korean researcher) had done some wonderful research on this very subject and failed to do what Dr. Gho claims. I believe that what I heard from Dr. Gho is marketing hype without any evidence of any hairs regrowing.

terrible hair transplant

This young man had a hair transplant by someone that didn’t understand the art and science of hair transplantation. There is no hairline design and large 2-5 hair grafts in the front of the hairline which looks pluggy. The repair for this should be relatively easy for me, but first I would have to see him and then make a plan with him.

Am I Balding?

Repeat From Archive

We have been getting a great number of questions about hairline hair loss. Basically the questions relate to the slow appearance of the mature male hairline. The pictures in this post show a young man in transition between his juvenile hairline and his mature hairline. Note that the corners are moving up and that there is some thinning of the leading edge of the hairline. What you see here is not balding, just maturing the hairline.

Please note that we do not generally diagnose hair line questions. However due to the increasing daily emails with photos of young men concerned about their hair line, we will soon be rolling out a new website where you can submit your photos and have others rate the hair loss. Stay tuned!

Testicular pain, stopped finasteride 7 months ago

I took finasteride for almost 30 days exactly around june last summer, but quit due to noticing gyno coming on, once i hopped off the gyno has stopped progressing but i still have a slightly watery semen and just last week i started having ball ache, it started very mild but it’s just been getting worse and worse. i’m going to try to get recommended to a hormone specialist or something on monday. has anyone else had a new side effect come on this late after stopping fin use? should i be very worried or is this just something minor? i haven’t had any ed problems or libido problems that i can notice, but i’m afraid that’s next

There are many causes of testicular pain and if you are off finasteride for 7 months, it is likely that you have one of these other causes. See your family doctor

Not Hair Loss News – Is There A Fountain Of Youth, Possibly A Drug To Prolong Life

We are moving in the general direction of prolonging life. Drugs to slow down aging are coming and some are even here now. The basic problem with extending life may reflect the quality of the life that is extended. If we add 10 years to a person’s life, will it be worthwhile? Will we just be filling the nursing homes with more debilitated, mentally impaired people?

In the recent issue of New Scientist (October 4, 2014 called Elixer of youth? It’s already here) and good overview of what is going on in the field of the ‘Elixer of Youth’ is examined. Google believes in this future and has invested in a company called Calico, an R&D firm targeting the life span issue. Even drug companies like Novartis have now entered the field with research of “geroprotetors” (longevity drugs). Many doctors who are in the anti-aging field are taking the drugs themselves even through they are deemed experimental at this time.

Adding up to 10 years on to your life may not be so distant into the future as you might think. Drugs such as a baby aspirin daily and a statin, is believed to reduce your risk of stroke, heart disease and even dementia. The evidence is clear on the use of baby aspirin but controversial for the value of statins. Some of the most promising drugs for future use were developedin organ transplants to reduce organ rejection such as the compound rapamycin. This drug has been found to extend life in yeast, worms and mice. A drug called everolimus can reverse the deterioration of the immune system that occurs with age. “Immune system aging is a major cause of disease and death.” These drugs seem to have the same effects on humans as seen in mice but the clinical evidence is wanting. The common drug metformin, used to treat diabetes, seems to have anti-aging effects when used on non-diabetes, but has side effects in producing diabetes in people taking it. Early evidence suggest that 15% of non-diabetics taking metforman were less likely to die than other not on the drug.

In other publications, Scientists have shown a link between long-living calorie-restricted mice and the types of microbes residing in the guts of those mice. The finding, published last month (July 16, 2013) in Nature Communications, suggests a novel mechanism of living longer by establishing the right kind of microbes in our gut through a low-calorie diet. We are learning more and more that we house colonies of gut bacteria that impact us in ways we never imagined.

“[The study] underlined the effectiveness of the healthy modulation of the gut microbiota along with diet specificities,” Jean-Paul Vernoux, a professor of food toxicology at the University of Caen in France who was not involved with the study, said in an email to The Scientist.

Caloric restriction has been known to extend life span in a variety of organisms, including humans, though the molecular mechanisms of this effect are not known. Recent research has begun to outline the role of the apparently innocuous microbes of the gut in modulating metabolism and immunity of their host. Based on these findings, Liping Zhao of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and his colleagues wondered if caloric restriction may prolong life span by modulating the type and composition of gut microbes.[/bq]

The 5mg Finasteride Sold Here Is Too Small to Be Cut!

I am 24 years old male. in my country there is no finasteride 1mg product of the pharmaceuticals companies. It’s also impossible for me to order online or import propecia. there is some finasteride 5mg product named “Prosfin” and it’s a famous pharma company. The main problem is the size of the tablet Prosfin is very small and it can not be cut with knife or pill cutter. i have to take finasteride because it works for me. Now what is the best solution for me, i mean how can i take finasteride 5mg tablet? it will be very helpful if u advice. should i take 1 tablet/3 days or 1 tablet/2 days? what will be the best? of course there is no way rather taking 5mg finasteride and it also impossible to cut it. Please advise. At last your blog is very helpful and i have not seen such a fantastic blog before.

You don’t want to take too much of the finasteride unnecessarily, as you do run a greater risk of side effect potential. Also, there’s no reason to have more medication in your system than needed for treatment.

I did some research and found that Prosfin (5mg finasteride for treating BPH) is made by Beximco Pharmaceuticals, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh. The same company does make a pill called Recur (1mg finasteride for treating MPB), so it should be available in your country. This should be the same as Propecia.

go I Have a Video Microscope – How Can I Self-Diagnose My Miniaturization?

I would like you to write a how to-guide on the topic “MINIATURIZATION”. I have a tool to zoom in on my scalp and hair. I was hoping to self-diagnose my miniaturization but I have no clue how to do it or what to look for. Please help!

Clip your hair to a pea size spot in different areas of your head:

  1. frontal area in midline
  2. corners – one inch behind both
  3. top of the head (area determined by a line from between the ears)
  4. the crown area (where the swirl is) including one inch in front of the swirl and one inch behind the swirl
  5. to the sides of the head about 1-2 inches from the midline

Using a video microscope, count the total hair population in the visual field no matter what the shaft thickness of the hair. That number will give you a density of the hair, particularly if you can measure the size of the visual field.

For a miniaturization map of the area, count the hair shafts that have a smaller diameter than the large hair shafts.

Use this formula:

Miniaturization Factor = small hair shafts÷total hair shafts

The mapping is done by recording the miniaturization factor for each area of hair you cut.

The projection for balding in the future will be determined by the area where miniaturization exceeds 20 percent (there are about 20 percent normal vellus hairs that look just like miniaturized hairs but are not). Miniaturized hairs have arrows pointing to them in the middle picture. Click to enlarge.

The Hair Around My Ears Doesn’t Grow As Long As the Rest of My Hair

Hello,

I hope all is well today. I was curious as to why hair around ones ear and lower hairline (the rim around sideburns/ ears to bottom back part of head / even up to temples) only grows a certain length. I guess I just assumed this hair would keep growing for years and be as long as ones hair on top. I am not experiencing MPB or anything, I was just curious. Seems as though even no matter how long my hair on top and mid sides gets these hairs around the hairline perimeter only grow so long, maybe just a few inches.

Thanks

Hair that grows in different parts of the scalp and neck vary from each other based upon your genetic programming. We are all different, so what applies to one person may not apply to another. For example, neck hair does not grow long like scalp hair in most people and it may even be different in texture.

How To Remove A Tattoo – A Review of the Science Behind Scalp MicroPigmentation & Tattoos

This is an excellent discussion of how to remove a traditional body tattoo Worth a viewing. Posted by Destin at SmarterEveryDay

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is essentially a specially applied tattoo where a pigment is deposited under your skin. I think that everyone who is going to undergo any tattoo, like Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) view these videos. The traditional tattoo moves the ink deeper than SMP does so colors can be blended with each other as an illustration is made. With SMP, every “dot” is controlled with regard to depth, time in the wound that is made and the angle of placement. The goal with SMP is to make every dot look like a follicular unit. With the limited volumes used in SMP, the migration of the pigments should be significantly less than with traditional tattoos.
