I Lost My Hair After Crash Diet

During period of two months October – December 2014 I lost 35 pounds, cca 15% of my total weight. I ate mainly vegetables, basically it was starvation and gym. At end of december noticed diffuse hair loss. Immediately normallized my eating pattern, went to dermatologist. Dermatologist ask for hair loss genetics and looked thru microscope. No signs of miniutarization, no vellus hairs and my hair genetics is perfect, no balding in my familly, I am 39 years old. 5 months after, there is no significant hair regrowth, and no further hair loss. What to expect, what will be real time frame for possible hair recovery? After hair loss I lost good amount of chest hair, could easily pull 70-80% of picked chest hairs, now it is ok..

Starvation like a crash diet and extreme work outs do not sound very healthy. It isn’t such a surprise you suffered some unintended consequence such as loss of your hair. I can’t tell you if your hair will grow back. Only time will tell.

I Overplucked My Eyebrows and Had Them Tattooed Back On, But Want a More Natural Look

I overplucked, then had to have them tattooed because they wouldn’t grow back. With the tattoing, of course, they didn’t regrow either. It’s been years and I would like a natural looking eyebrow, one that doesn’t fade and frames my face. What would you recommend?

Hair transplants into the eyebrows is the answer and it works wonderfully. Here’s an example of a female patient that had eyebrow restoration — Patient BG. For more info about eyebrow transplants, here’s an article from a few months back that I was quoted in — Women who pluck too much turn to eyebrow transplants.

I Scratched Away Some Grafts During My Hair Transplant Procedure

I just did a small fue procedure into my scar, I asked to be sedated but during the procedure I scratched away some of my grafts unconsciously. The operating team choose to put some of the grafts back in the scar, can you please tell me something about the grafts survival chances?

For starters, I do not know what, where, and how your surgery was performed. Generally, an FUE procedure may have lower yield and is HIGHLY variable with different medical groups and doctors; the procedure is almost never the same from one doctor to another. Moreover, hair transplantation to a scar may not have a high growth yield when compared to hair transplanted to normal skin.

Graft survival depends on how long it was out of your body with the real issue of graft drying. Grafts that are left in the open hair for 20 seconds will generally die and that is why we are compulsive in keeping the grafts moist as we move them. As you can start to see there are numerous variables at work here and it is not a question I can answer, but most of the time if the grafts come out, they dry and die. Your surgeon is the best person to address your concern (as it always should be).

I Stopped Taking Propecia, So How Much Catch-Up Hair Loss Should I Expect?

Hello Dr. Rassman!

First of all, thank you for this spectacular blog, it’s amazing.

I’m a 21 year old who has been on propecia for about a year. I’m unlucky in the sense that I started thinning all over except for the sides and back since I was 17. I however decided 2 weeks ago I didn’t want to take propecia anymore because damn it, I don’t care what society thinks. I’ll be bald, proud, and won’t let something like hair stand in my way. I’m a man. I’m not supposed to be pretty, but manly.

My question is, how much catch up hair loss is there likely to be? I don’t feel like propecia did much for me. It seems like my hair’s a bit thicker… but not really, so… Is there any possibility I’m one of those people propecia did nothing more than a placebo to?

Thank you for your time and all the best!

It’s possible that Propecia kept your hair loss from being worse than it is, but it’s also possible that you are a non-responder to the medication. I really have no way to know, as I don’t have any hair bulk analysis to compare before starting the medication and today. You can look into having a HairDX test done to predict your response to finasteride.

If you do see catch-up hair loss after stopping Propecia, I suppose that means the medication was working for you. Your hair loss will eventually catch up to the point you’d be at had you never started the medication. So if the Propecia worked to some degree, any benefits will eventually be gone.

I Think I Had Shock Loss Even Though I’ve Been Taking Finasteride

Hello Dr,

Thanks for providing all the information you are providing to hair loss sufferers. I have a question. I had a Transplant a 7 weeks ago(Strip method) on my crown area. I was on (and still on) Finasteride prior to my Transplant. Lately I lost my native hair and I am seeing that I have less hair on my top now compared to hair that I had before the transplant. I learnt that this is because of the shock loss. But I was on finasteride before the HT. So, do you think this is temporary and can expect m native hair back. If so how much time does it take?

I try to educate my patients and readers everyday… and this must be one of the top ten things I want the public to understand.

Taking Propecia (finasteride) does not protect you 100% from experiencing shock loss — it only lowers the risk. If you have shock loss, there’s not much you can do (actually, nothing you can do)… and if it is in miniaturized hairs, it may very well be permanent! Statistics do not matter to those who have shock loss even while on Propecia. This is one of the risks of a hair transplant and you must always balance the benefits of surgery with the risks of surgery.

I Thought You Can See Hair Transplants!

If I have a restoration of the crown, will the swirl look right or will it look noticeably like a transplant?

If the surgeon is experienced and properly recreates the whorl in your crown, it will not stand out as anything more than your naturally growing hair.

Just the other day, I went to my new eye doctor. We talked for a bit and when she asked me what I did for a living, I told her I performed hair transplant surgeries. She was suspicious, so I pointed to my crown and told her that those were hair transplants (see here). She said, “That’s hard to believe! I always thought that you can see them.” I couldn’t help but smile.

Hi Dr Rassman, you mentioned a man with a miracle cure of alopecia areata through dr. richard strick & you also mentioned that DNCB which was the treatment, is very dangerous. can you comment on that, i have alopecia areata and would like to know what i may be getting into?

You’re referring to the previous posting I made titled Alopecia Areata in a Patient with a Miracle Cure. I am not an expert on this treatment, but I suggest that if you wish to learn more, you should look to:

I Want to Make a West Coast Road Trip For My Consultation.

hello dr rassman, pak, and co,

I am a 33 yo male who may be travelling to the west coast in october and is considering trying to set an appointment for an honest opinion regarding options for my hair loss (if any). if one were deemed a good candidate for either the strip procedure or fue, essentially what is the time investment needed to be in the area for any checkup/followup/aftercare. is there a necessary follow up evaluation a few days or week post op? i ask this now bc if a master plan is suggested i would need to plan around a work schedule. i wasnt sure if a 2 week commitment is recommended to then allow someone to return to work without detection of the surgery. i would be travelling from the pittsburgh, pa area. if it helps i use couvre/dermatch and toppik concealers as part of my daily routine currently. ideally id return to using those products until any results showed from any procedure.I appreciate all you do on this site as well as helping restore patients self confidence. thanks in advance.

road

We would be glad to meet with you for a consultation. You can always make an appointment on line at newhair.com (Look on Bottom Right)

Many people travel from out of town to have a procedure in Los Angeles. In general you can set aside 1 to 2 weeks depending on your comfort level. Some people actually go back to work 1 or 2 days after surgery. The only follow up is the day after surgery. Every person is different. Many patients also use temporary concealers (Toppik) after surgery to disguise the immediate look after surgery.

I want two FUE and one FUT

If a patient gets two FUE’s and then later wants to do an FUT, will there be a risk that the two FUE’s will deplete the donor hairs for FUT regions in the future? I am thinking of getting two FUE’s in Turkey and then later when I can afford it get a big FUT in America with maybe Dr. Lindsey in Richmond because I can stay with family near there

Suppose the patient is like a NW2 with a very large / dense donor supply.

In an ideal world, if you are going to do both FUE and FUT in separate surgeries, you are better starting with FUT because the reduction on donor density is less and the FUE will be more successful in harvesting more grafts. The reason for this is that the entire back of the head stretches, reducing the impact on the 3 inch high donor area with the first a large FUT session.

I generally like to put together a Personalized Master Plan for each patient balancing donor supply with the present and potential balding. You may be over-doing the grafting without such a plan. Be careful not to jump on the bandwagon with too many grafts harvested from the donor area and get a balding donor area.

I Was Prescribed Beclomethasone Dipropionate

I had gone to dermatologist for the hairloss problem. He prescribed Finasteride along with Beclomethasone Dipropionate lotion. I want to know how does this Beclomethasone lotion function. Any side effects of it and for how long it has to be taken ?

Finasteride 1mg is for traeting androgenic alopecia (genetic hair loss in men). Beclometasone dipropionate is a corticosteroid that is used to treat skin disorders, like eczema or psoriasis… and is not usually used for treating androgenic alopecia. Do you have a skin disease?

Perhaps you should ask your doctor, since he/she is the one that prescribed it to you. I can’t give you advice on how much or how long to use a prescription medication, as I didn’t prescribe it and I don’t know what you’re treating.
