So I’m 6 months into my finasteride 1mg a day and minoxidil 5% twice daily treatment. The first few months were good, I had an initial shedding period that I expected and then the shedding stopped. However now it’s starting to shed more and it’s begun to have me concerned

Hair loss is a progressive process and just because you are now treating it and it worked for 6 months, it doesn’t mean that the hair loss just will not accelerate while you are on treatment. Speak with your hair doctor about it.

I have had 3 consultations and each one told me that I needed a different number of grafts. One doctor quoted 4000 grafts, another 3500 grafts and a third 3000 grafts. It is very confusing. My hair is a medium weight hair (I know you always ask) so I am asking you what you think I need for grafts.

Too many doctors or clinics push up the number of grafts well beyond what you need. With a medium weight hair, I doubt that you will need more than 2000 grafts to lower the hairline and bring the corners down. The reason that the numbers you heard were high is because too many doctor think about grafts as $$ in their pocket, more grafts more $$ for them. For the patient like you, too many grafts deplete your permanent hair supply and if you found yourself balding as you got older and did 4000 grafts for the front now, you might find yourself without any hair reserves for future balding.

I am 29 yr old female and I am losing some eyelashes on the middle part of my upper eyelid. Is it do to a lack of some kind of vitamin or could it be because I had an eyelash perm? But I was losing a couple before I had that done.What do you think?

Eyelash loss is often due to blepharitis, which is an inflammatory condition of the eyelids. Any mechanical manipulation may cause eyelash loss. It may happen with false eyelashes or eyelash perm. The other possible causes include hormonal problems, such as a thyroid problem (hypothyroid), and pulling eyelashes due to psychological conditions (trichotillomania). Your eyelash loss may be part of a condition called alopecia areata, which is an immunologic disorder that may cause patchy hair loss in different areas. I recommend that you see a dermatologist for this problem.

The number of grafts depends upon (1) the thickness of your hair (fine, medium or coarse), (2) the donor density which tells the doctor how many hairs are present per follicular unit and (3) where the center hairline belongs (I don’t see the highest crease of the furrowed brow to measure the appropriate distances). Based upon these three factors and assuming that the center hairline is now in its final position, I would guess that the number of grafts (assuming that the grafts average 2.2 hairs/graft), that it would take 1700-2700 grafts (more if the hair is fine and less if the hair is coarse).

I weighed around 85-86kg before this, and now, two weeks and two days later from the initial depression episode starting, ended two days ago, I weigh around 80-81kg apparently according to the scales. I am concerned, thats alot of weight to lose in such a short time.

It is different with different people, but 15 pounds per months could trigger hair loss with the genes for balding on board. When the genes kick in, it rarely reverses.
