Woman Lost 50% of Her Hair in Under a Month!

I have lost a good 50% of my hair in the past 3 weeks. I have been weaned off Metoprolol recently and stopped Pravastatin on Christmas Day in an effort to see which, if either, are causing the massive loss. How long might it take for the Pravastatin to clear my system and if Pravastatin is the culprit, how long before my hair stops falling out. I am a 60 year old female who previous to this had a very good head of hair. I had a triple bypass in September and e-coli sepsis a few weeks later. I was hospitalized for 5 days of intravenous Avelox but not very sick with the sepsis so I’m assuming it was caught early. If my hair loss was caused by the sepsis would it fall out in such large amounts and so quickly. Thank you!

I highly doubt any drug is the culprit of your hair loss, but to lose 50% of your hair in only one month is definitely not normal. There may be medical issues that you are not aware of. You need to see your physician and discuss your issues with him/her. It seems you have gone through some serious illness and surgeries in recent months. Acute telogen effluviums can cause this problem, but the real question is what caused that? I would strongly urge you to be followed by your physician regarding your medication regimen, as I trust your physician is aware of you stopping or weaning off certain medications.

I found an alternative to SMP.

I just tanned my head haha.

Tanning works like anything that changes the contrast between hair and skin color. The darker your skin with dark hair, the less the contrast between hair and skin color. I often recommend that men with very white skin get a tan. Dying it blonde works even better for the white guys, maybe not for darker haired men. Woman’s Hair Grows on the Sides of Her Head, But Not on Top

I am a 48 year old African American female. I am diabetic. I also relax my own hair. For a while, the hair on the sides of my head has grown considerably, but the hair on the top of my head had not. Is this indicative of any particular condition? Thank you for your help.

You may have chemical damage from relaxing your hair, or genetic hair loss…. or something else entirely going on. There are a variety of possible causes for hair loss in women (see here).

Without seeing you, I can not tell much. Make an appointment with a good doctor/dermatologist who will give you an opinion.

I had 4400 grafts 7 months ago (photo)

It doesn’t look like much of it has grown. What should I do now. Should I get PRP and ACell treatments offered by some doctors on the internet?

At seven months, you are seeing less that 50 percent of growth of what you can expect from your transplanted grafts. I would not expect the areas in the center to grow much more. I always tell my patients to go back and speak with their doctor as most reputable doctor will make things right financially. A-Cell and PRP is a waste of your money at this stage.

Worried About Side Effects of Medications Such as Propecia / Finasteride

Many readers here on Baldingblog are here to seek information for their hair loss issues. There are many who are “scared” or concerned with side effects from Propecia which can actually help with male pattern balding. The most noticeable side effect in question is the concern for erectile dysfunction or loss of libido as there are numerous Internet sites that propagate this issue.

While everyone has their right to express their opinions and I would like to assume what they are experiencing is “real” to them, I would like to caution the reader to keep in mind the big picture.

People take medication to treat something. But ALL medications have side effects! And if a medication has side effects that cause erectile dysfunction and decreased libido, then you need a doctor to manage it. Some medications that have many known side effects (which include erectile dysfunction) that are commonly used include: Paxil, Prozac (psychiatric medication), Lipitor (cholesterol medication), Metoprolol (blood pressure medication).

Many men who do not take any medication also experience sexual dysfunction as part of their aging process or as a result of some problem with penile blood flow from conditions such as vascular disease or diabetes. Sexual dysfunction may be more frequent than what we all may expect because nobody really wants to admit they have a sexual problem. After all it is a sensitive topic! Propecia (finasteride) has a sexual side effect risk of 2%.

Now if in the end one experience a real side effect from Propecia, you can always STOP taking the medication. But always discuss these issues with your doctor first! At least you tired! Because all side effects from Propecia is reversible.

I had a strip surgery when I was 22, now I’m 36 and regret that decision

I had a FUT procedure done when i was 22 and regret the experience deeply. I am now 36 and although somewhat comfortable with losing my hair at this stage in my life, I am left with a terrible ear to ear FUT scar. I have seen some SMP results of hair transplant scar concealment and believe this may be what i am looking for to finally put my transplant procedure behind me.

Would you be able to recommend specialists in this area? I am in South florida but would be willing to travel if it meant a better result.

I generally don’t trust most of the SMP providers in the marketplace because there is a general lack of understanding of the basic principles of the SMP process and it shows in their results.

Would Mini-FUE Be Ideal for Treating Possible Triangular Alopecia?

Good day Dr Rassman,
I wonder if i would be an ideal candidate for your new FUE harvesting technique!

I have been in contact with you before. I am a 44yr old male with a small (1 inch) bald spot on my right side in front of the ear. i have never seen anyone else with this particular condition, i wonder if you have. i can resend pictures as no doubt you are unlikely to have the ones i sent to you some years ago. Hair miniaturised in this area probably at the start of my balding process (was gone by the time i was 30 i think). Many years of propecia and minoxidil have had no effect whilst they have had some effect on the top of my head.

A consultation with a dermatologist diagnosed triangular alopecia (although that was simply by looking and he may have just have piggy backed onto my suggestion that it was!!). A course of steroids both topical and injections have had no effect.

i wonder if this new technique could be the answer. My only concern is that if this is an immune system rejection of hair in that area, then i assume placing more hair there will be rejected as well but i am no expert just looking for a solution. many thanks

If you have a 1 inch area on one side of your head, a mini-FUE would possibly be ideal.

Before assuring your candidacy for surgery, I’d of course have to see precisely what you’re referring to and I’d want to know for sure what the diagnosis was. I don’t know why you’d think your immune system would reject hair transplanted into an area of your scalp.

I Have a Full Head of Hair and I’m Constantly in Fear of Losing It

I have started worrying about losing my hair. Until recently I hadn’t worried about losing my hair since my temples receded slightly as a young man. I had no reason to believe I was losing my hair. Since I have started worrying (triggered off by the fact that I am about to turn 33 and feel that as a hairy bodied man, I must start losing my hair soon) I have started to spot signs of losing hair.

I have looked at the hairs from the top of my head and they seem to be finer than the hairs at the back of my head. However, I have no way of knowing whether this was always the case. The hair seems a little thinner in the temples and doesn’t seem as thick overall as it used to but I am aware that hair naturally thins over your life and this isn’t necessarily MPB.

Basically this has become a problem for me because I can’t stop worrying about it and constantly check my hair, look for information on the internet, and stress out. If you saw me you would think that I was worrying about nothing – I have a full head of hair at 33 and as such am unlikely to go completely bald, if at all. Also, balding in older men is often part of the aging process so I am effectively worrying about getting old. Am I just being neurotic?

If you’re not actually seeing any hair loss, but THINK your hair MIGHT be getting thinner up top, the only thing I’d recommend doing is getting your hair bulk analyzed with the HairCheck instrument. Beyond that, stressing out and worrying about maybe losing your hair might actually cause hair loss due to the stress. I hope I didn’t stress you out more by saying that!

There’s no point in being anxious about possibly losing your hair, especially since you’re in your 30s and aren’t seeing loss by now. Most men that are destined to lose hair due to their genetics will start to see the process starting in their 20s.

You have recipient area necrosis which means that the skin in the black areas you see has died. These crusts will eventually fall off, many times showing red granulation tissue which will close over time. My team has done over 16,000 surgeries and have never seen a single case of this. This means that either the grafts were placed too closely together, the instruments were too large, or both.
