If My Hair Can Be Pulled Out Easily, Does That Mean Rogaine and Propecia Are Becoming Less Effective?

Hello Doctor,

I have been loosing my hair since the age of 16 and finally took notice months before my 18th birthday. Currently I am on both propecia and 5% Rogaine and have been for the past year (prior I relied on just 1.25mg finasteride). My current results with my regimen have been satisfactory, as I can not for sure say what I’d look without the medication.

My question is regarding the ease of hair falling from the scalp when rubbed and the amount of hair strands that can been pulled by gently using your index finger and thumb. Recently I have been able to pull about 3-5 strands at a time out of head and hair tends to fall out easily when I rub it (a common habit of mine while studying). This has been occurring on and off for the past couple of months- especially after I was off rogaine for a period of 2 weeks in January while I awaiting for new shipment to arrive (I order the foam online through ebay since it is not available in Canada).

Do these symptoms indicate that the drugs are becoming less effective now, leaving genetics to take its course? Is there any shampoo or conditioner that you recommend or heard from prior patients to help strengthen the hair follicle?

Maybe you should stop pulling on your hair. How easily your hair falls out has no real clinical significance with Rogaine or Propecia use.

There is no magic drug, shampoo, conditioner, or potions that will help strengthen hair. There are hundreds of products out there. Try them. I am not against them, but you WILL end up spending a significant amount of money and likely be left without any benefit.

If Transplant Techniques Were Better Years Ago, Would Some People Even Need SMP Today?

Hi Doc. I was just reading your recent article “Hair Transplants with Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (with Photos)” and was wondering whether or not the patient would be in the same position now if you knew the hair transplant techniques back then, that you know now.

Is it possible that with ultra refined techniques the transplanted hairs would have been transplanted more evenly around the head meaning that Scalp Micro-Pigmentation would not have been necessary.

Best

The simple answer to your question is: Yes! Many people with advanced balding patterns just don’t have enough donor hair to cover the entire balding pattern, so SMP (scalpmicropigmentation) solves this problem.

I hear ultra refined technique used sometimes but it is more of a term described in forums such as Hair Transplant Network. That terminology is just semantics. The GOLD STANDARD in hair transplant surgery is transplanting one follicular unit at a time. It doesn’t matter what you call it. AT NHI we have being doing this since we opened in the early 1990’s and have pioneered and published on this technique (HERE).

To be clear, no matter how perfect the technique (you can use ultra refined technique if you would like), you have a LIMITED and FINITE supply of donor hair. So no matter how refined, you can never have the fullness of someone who is not bald. Hair transplant is great at providing a non balding look and creating a solid non-receding frame to your face. But hair transplant is in essence moving hairs around from one place to another.

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is not perfect since it is not hair. However, (like Toppik and DermMatch and other concealers) it reduces the contrast between hair and scalp providing the look of fullness that a hair transplant may not provide. It also provides an EVEN appearance when you shave your scalp. More importantly, SMP provides any hair transplant patient an option to SHAVE their scalp and disguise the donor scar. Even for people with FUE surgery, there is a scar in the form of DOTS. SMP can also blend in these FUE dots.

SMP is a great adjunct to hair transplant.

I’m 16 Years Old and Feel That Masturbation is Causing My Hair Loss

I am 16 years old and i m experiencing heavy hair loss… I have been masturbating for 4 years, every 2-3 days and i feel that masturbating is the reason for my hair loss. I also have a few pimples on my head after i masturbate, but i use a ointment Ecodex-G and the pimples disappear in a few days.

Please tell me if this hair loss is due to heavy masturbating,, and is it possible to regrow these hairs if i stop masturbating for a long span of time (2-3 months), and if not then what is the problem and the solution for it.

I only seem to get these questions from young men in India, which leads me to believe that it is a widely accepted myth in that region.

Masturbation and hair loss are unrelated. I’ve answered this question countless times and the answer doesn’t change. If curing hair loss was as simple as not masturbating, there would be a lot less balding men in the world. Of course, you are free to not masturbate and test for yourself, but it will make no difference in whether your hair grows or not.

I’m 22 Years Old With a Great Hairline, but Thinning At the Top! (with Photo)

Hi! I’m 22 years old and am about to turn 23 and am very concerned about some hair loss/balding. What is most frightening is how sudden this is. Is all hair loss a sign of balding or can hair loss happen suddenly due to external factors?

While doing research on balding, I saw the pattern charts. I don’t seem to be following any pattern, but the thinning of my hair is certainly noticeable to me. My friends don’t see it yet, but I can at least style it for now to hide any thinning.

I’m seeing thinning at the top of my head… My hairlines have NOT receded and I am not experiencing any loss of hair on the sides. Do you have a guess as to what pattern this could be? Do you think it’s balding or temporary? Is there anything I can do to slow or stop it?

22 seems like a really young age to lose hair :/ especially for someone who aspires to work in the entertainment industry..

Thanks for any help or advice

We generally think that men recede front to back and with the presentations of the Norwood classifications these seems to be the case; however, I do see people maintain strong frontal hairlines and lose hair behind it. This is why when we examine a patient we test for hair bulk behind the hairline and in the crown. Often, to my surprise, I see loss of bulk in the top and/or in the crown, even when it does not appear deficient with my naked eye.

If you take a person with medium weight dark brown or black hair that has a loss of 50% of the hairs in the top and crown, you likely will not be able to tell that there is hair loss. If the bulk analysis shows hair loss in the top and crown, that is a good reason for taking finasteride and it will often control it. By taking two measurements about a year apart, you will know for sure if the hair loss continues, is stabilized, or if it reverses.

At 22 years old, it isn’t abnormal to see hair loss if you have the genetics for it. But I don’t have any idea if this is genetic balding, disease, diet, stress, etc. You need to have an examination to hopefully determine what is going on with your loss and try to get it under control. Knowing what is going on allows you to be proactive in what happens to you.

I’m 26, Norwood Class 3V and want to try a Hair System

I tell men that if they get a hair system when they are young, the hair system attachments (glues, clips, etc..) cause loss of the hair on your scalp and you become more bald and more dependent upon the hair system. Hair transplants can solve the problem but the balder you get, the higher the costs so keep that in mind.

10 weeks on finasteride (photo)

This man(in his mid-twenties has recent hair loss in the past 8 months prior to commencing treatment). He must have been very sensitive to the results of good DHT blocking with finasteride. Men like him are young and have more recent hair loss than those who do not respond. A great early result that will just get better in time.

I’m 7 Months Pregnant and Experiencing Hair Loss

Please help me – I’ve been suffering from hair shedding since Aug 2007. I was on the pill for 12 years and came off in august just after my wedding to conceive. I concieved straight away and am now 7 months pregnant. In Dec 2006, I was in hospital for a day with an infection which caused a hemorrhage. The shedding does seem to have slowed down now so losing about 25 after washes and I feel spiky bits all over my head. This has lasted about 7 months now and just wanted to know how long it usually last for and if it will stop? Will I ever get the thickness back in my hair?

I’m so depressed about this and would be grateful if you could help me. Thanks

You have many potential causes for hair loss, including:

  • Pregnancy, which can cause hair loss that should reverse after about a year
  • Changes in your hormones from the withdrawal of birth control pills
  • Illness from the infection that put you into the hospital

It is likely that this process will reverse. You are not alone and the experience of others with this problem have been far from hopeless.
