I’m 21 and Want a Hair Transplant Because You Can See Through Most of My Hair (Front, Top and Back of My Head, in Other Words from All Over)

I’m a junior in College and my roommates are telling me that I am losing my hair. I never noticed it before but I now realize that I can see through my entire scalp. It looks like my hair is thinning everywhere. I am thinking seriously about getting a hair transplant.

You need to be evaluated by an expert who specializes in hair transplantation, and is honest and doesn’t do it just for the money he gets from you. A good opinion is critical. I met with a man from Reddit last week who thought he was balding and had seen another doctor who offered him a hair transplant. When I examined him with the HAIR CHECK instrument and a trichoscope, it was clear he was not balding (and he did not have DUPA), so what he was seeing was very fine hair with very poor density (which I measured as very low). He was probably born that way and just noticed it recently from comments by friends. If he got a hair transplant with his poor hair and poor density, he would end up deformed for life because he had terrible hair and just would never make a good hair transplant candidate. If he felt strongly about his appearance, a wig might work for him or he should just accept what he has. We could offer him Scalp Micropigmentation which would make his hair appear much thicker. It would make his white scalp less prominent which is a much better option than a wig because it is full freedom to be himself.

I’m 24 and considering surgery to reduce my forehead

Is it rational for me to think that either a forehead reduction or a hair transplant at 24 is a good idea because my forehead bothers me?

I never TELL patients what to do, I just educate them. At 24 for a male, it is rarely a good idea to do any hair work unless you have certainty about your balding pattern, have a HAIRCHECK test to help you determine that pattern, sit down with a very good skilled doctor who cares about you and not the money he will make from giving you some type of surgery. Get it?

10 months on minoxidil and finasteride (photo)

These are very nice results, especially in the crown which is more predictable. The frontal hairline is starting to grow out as well.

I’m 34 and considering starting finasteride now

I’m 34 and have been using min and niz for about 10 years. Honestly they did their job in maintaining and even regrowing a bit of my hair pretty well but I can see my hair is starting to thin out a bit on top. More of my scalp is visible. I ordered some cheap generic brand of fin called Accord (hopefully its legit) but after reading this forum I’m having second thoughts. My sex drive isn’t that high as it is and the side effects seem brutal. Is there anything I should know before starting these pills or should I just not bother?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Finasteride is a lifetime commitment so if I were you, I would try to get a HAIRHCECK test (https://baldingblog.com/haircheck-test-how-it-is-done-video/ ) before starting the drug to be absolutely sure you know where your hair loss is starting from.

I’m Already Taking Propecia, So Doctors Can’t Determine My True Norwood Pattern

Hello dr.rassman.
I am in my early 30’s and receding and losing hair in the front area of my scalp. I recently went to get a hair consultation done and they said I could end up a norwood 4 but they do not know because I am on propecia and there is no really way of telling what norwood pattern I will eventually end up at and when. Currently, I am a norwood 2.

If there is no way of knowing what my pattern will be and when my hair will stabilize or if it will at all, isn’t it pointless to go for a procedure before I fully stabilize because if I don’t, my native hairs will fall out and the transplant will look bad. For all I know, it can take 20 years before I stabilize and reach my pattern!

It really doesn’t have to be that complicated.

Most men show signs of thinning in a specific pattern by the time they are in the mid 20’s to 30’s. Taking Propecia would not affect it too much if you pay close attention and have good miniaturization measurements and bulk measurements.

Remember, Propecia does NOT completely stop hair loss. It slows it down. You will see a pattern if not in the first exam, but over the course of several months with interval measurements.

1/4 Tablet of Proscar with Breakfast

Dr Rassman
If i take 1/4 proscar with breakfast will it get absorbed in my blood streem or is the tablet just too small after it is mixed with food? Do you think it is better to take it on a empty stomach? Thanks

I’ve often said that in my opinion, it is best to take it before breakfast. I generally think that it is best taken on an empty stomach although it probably makes no difference on the absorption issue.

I am 15 years old and am losing hair. Can I take finasteride?

Depending upon your bone maturation, it may not be unreasonable to use the drug finasteride, but first where you are on YOUR growth curve (e.g. bony maturation) plus other factors relating to your hair loss are critical to understand. I belong to a group of 60 doctors who share a common email and the subject of young boys 15 and up and the use of finasteride has come up. With proper doctoring, this can be an option. The HAIRCHECK test is a critical first step in evaluating the degree of hair loss that you have. Many doctors may not want to use this drug on you so it is a careful discussion with you, your parents and your doctors that is critical in making such decision.
