Will I Go Bald if Dad is Bald?

If my dad is bald will i be bald too?? If so, when will I start losing my hair. I am 26 now.

We inherit our genetic balding from both sides of the family, even from our grandparents when our parents do not express the balding gene and have a full head of hair. Do not obsess with what may happen to you for if it has not started by 26, it is less likely that you will follow a signficant balding pattern. Ask your dad when he first noticed balding, and if it was after 30, then maybe time will yet unfold an outcome like his. If he started before 26, then it is likely that you will not follow his pattern. Most bald men have signs by the age of 26 that balding may happen.

I am worried about my hairline, especially the right corner, what are your thoughts? (photos)

It is too early to tell much. Your hairline is still in its juvenile position (because it approximates the highest crease of the furrowed brow) and I would expect that it would rise about 1/4 inch from where it is. Maybe what you are seeing on the right side is the first step in this process. If I were to see you, I would look to see if you had miniaturization in the frontal area, which would indicate changes coming.

Will my Class 4 pattern advance? I’m 58

Often, men achieve their genetic inherited pattern of hair loss and then stop losing hair. To judge if this is the end point, go back and see if your hair loss pattern has been stable for the past 5 years and if so, this means that you might have reached your inherited hair loss pattern by now

I Can’t See Much Difference Between Avodart and Propecia

i like to know if avodart is better treatment then propecia? i’m taking avodart for 8 months and i cant say that i see so much different….

Avodart (dutasteride) should be reserved for those who do not respond to Propecia (finasteride). It is an off-label use, which means that the FDA does not authorize Avodart’s use for hair loss. In most people, the difference should be non-existent, but for the few who are unable to get Propecia to work, Avodart may have an advantage as it is a more powerful DHT blocker.

Will Shaving My Head Increase The Hair Loss Rate?

I am 23 and have experienced significant hairloss in the past 5 months. I did not start taking Propecia and now I am currently studying in China and the medication is unavailable here. To stop the anxiety of noticing my rapid hairloss I was considering shaving my head. Will this at all increase the rate of hairloss until I can begin treatment on Propecia, Minoxidil, etc?

Shaving your head will have no impact on your hair loss, one way or the other.

I Developed Shock Loss and Have Questions

Hi all, I am recovering from shock loss on my frontal hairline – 7 months post hair transplant. When I stand very close to a mirror, under light, I see many fine, thin, hair sprouting from the shock loss area. When I stand farther away, the hairs cannot be seen and my shock loss area looks bald. If these fine, thin hair grew into thicker more colorful hairs, I would be cured of this shock loss episode.

My question is is there a way to differentiate which of these fine, thin, wispy hairs will sprout into terminal hair and which will remain baby hairs? Do baby hairs grow in length, or remain short? The hairs in the shock loss area appear to be growing-but even with growth they are still colorless and very then and weak.

Vellus hairs are the short hairs that are mixed in with each follicular group of normal hairs. Miniaturized hairs are hairs that have lost their thickness and are noticeably thinner than the hairs on the back of your head. Full terminal hairs are the hairs that you have in the back of your head. Shock loss rarely reverses the loss of miniaturized hairs, while terminal hairs that are lost often come back.

I Drink a Lot of Alcohol and I Take Propecia

I’ve been taking Propecia for almost a year now and don’t think I’ve seen any more loss but I’m curious about taking Propecia whilst drinking heavily. I drink every night due to a stressful job and also entertain clients. I am looking into cutting down but due to the nature of my work, it’s not always possible.

If I am taking Propecia whilst drinking a lot, is there a better time of the day for me to take it? If I take it in the morning before work after a night of drinking, will my body process it like normal?

You know this already, but you should cut down or stop your excessive drinking. Taking Propecia is not related nor interferes with alcohol intake.

However, if you develop liver disease from the excessive alcohol, this could negatively impact the metabolism of Propecia. But if it got that far, hair loss shouldn’t be your number one priority anyway.

Woman Wants Chest Hair

I am a woman who once had lots of chest hair. I still have belly hair and lower back hair. This may sound odd, but my hairy chest did wonders for my sex life. My chest hairs disappeard at 38. I really want my chest hair back. Is there a prescription that I can get from my doctor to regrow it? Is there any OTC that works? Thank you.

I don’t know why you had chest hair to start with or why you eventually lost it. This condition is called hirsutism. Many hormonal imbalances can increase hair in the female body. There are a wide range of medications and disorders that can cause this condition, including:

  • Obesity
  • Exogenous androgens
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) — most common
  • Congenital or delayed-onset adrenal hyperplasia
  • Cushing syndrome
  • Hyperinsulinemia
  • Hyperprolactinemia
  • Excess growth hormone
  • Hypothyroidism

Since you lost your body hair, it seems that whatever had been giving you a hairy chest is not in the picture anymore, so I don’t know whether or not an internist or an endocrinologist can help you figure out what gave you your hairy body. Also, there is no OTC that can give you your chest hair back.

We have transplanted hair in the chest area, although I can’t recall a case where this was performed on a woman. I might consider doing a procedure of this type if that is what you want, if I find you reasonable and mentally stable, and if a good patient/doctor relationship exists.

I Got Gum In My Hair

Hi, about two months ago I got gum in my hair and my girlfriend ripped it out and with it came a chunk of hair. I didn’t worry about it all that much because you couldn’t really see the bald spot because my other hair covered it pretty well. Well it’s been two months and I got a buzz cut and now I still have a quarter sized bald spot a little bit above my left ear. How long will it take for this hair to grow back? Will it even grow back at all? I’m starting to get worried about permanent damage seeing as how it’s been two months and it’s still as smooth as a babies butt. Thanks.

The hair should grow back within the next few months. I have seen many cases of a one-time hair pull before (from a fight, mugging , gum situation, prank gone wrong)… and the hair has always regrown. You’ll just need to be patient.
