More and More Differently Textured Hairs Are Growing On My Scalp

Hello Dr. Rassman,

First I want to excuse for my not-so-good English.

I am a 23-year-old male. About 2 years ago I noticed my hair thinning all over the top of my head and the hairline slowly eroding away from its original position. I’ve been on finasteride for about 20 months.

Anyway, I’ll get straight to the problem… About half a year ago I noticed strange-looking random hairs on the top of my head. My natural hair colour is dark brown, but mentioned hairs are ebony black. Not only that, but they are at least twice thicker and very wiry. They are easily noticeable, because they don’t mix with my normal hair when combing. Even though my hair is around 3” in length, they stand there almost vertically, slightly curled up.

As I mentioned, 6 months ago they were just some couple of random hairs. Lately I have noticed more and more of hairs like that sprouting up. They look nothing like my hair. In fact, they don’t look like human hair at all. At least not the kind you’d expect one to have growing on his head.

I’m really clueless as to what is going on with me. I have tried searching all over the Internet. I have found people with similar problems, but no one really knows what they are about.

Perhaps You can help me.

Thanks!

Hmm… so you are saying you have non-human like hair growing on your scalp? Is there a correlation with a full moon? Do you have an urge to howl?

Sometimes hairs can have different textures and there may be no direct reason for this. Maybe it is hormonal. I do not know. If you’re concerned, you should see a doctor about it.

Blood Pressure Medication and Female Hair Loss?

(female) I have been taking Hyzaar 50/12.5, a high blood pressure medication, for several years and I am experiencing balding in the top of my head and thinning around the edges; before taking this medication I had a full head of hair. Is there a high blood pressure medication that would possible not cause hair loss or thinning?

Hyzaar is known to cause hair loss in some people (“alopecia” is listed as a side effect). The pill is a combination of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and losartan, and I’ve written about HCTZ before. That being said, blood pressure medication is not generally the first thing doctors look for when evaluating hair loss in women. There are many other medical conditions that contribute to hair loss in women and these should be evaluated by your primary care physician. Some (but not all) of the causes can be anemia, thyroid conditions, menopause, genetic, lupus, etc. (see here).

Morning Erection and Finasteride Doseage

Your website is a great and informative, objective source of information. Well done.

I’m 48 and been on fin for nearly 15 years under the care of a doctor. I started on 1 mg per day, but reduced to 0.25 mg per day mid last year in response to what I perceived as libido issues. These are now resolved.

I have also noticed a return of morning wood at the lower dose. My question is: do you know of any science to support a negative correlation between finasteride dosage and morning erections, and if so what is the mechanism?

Thank you for your efforts.

I am not aware of any studies and I would be guessing at the mechanism of how morning erections are correlated with finasteride dose. It could just be a perceived effect not related to the dose or it may be the dose change after all. It is not hard to imagine that less drug should cause less side effect. The other issue to consider is that would less drug produce less benefit for what the drug was treating. There is a delicate balance between these two statements.

The observation you pose is real (for yourself) but it is difficult to prove on an absolute basis unless you have hundreds (if not thousands) of patients who are willing to take the a pill that is randomized to different dose or just a placebo (“sugar pill”) and report their erection in the morning. Even the doctor overseeing the patient would not know if the pill was a placebo until the entire study was complete (double blind randomized control test).

My personal thought is that if you and your doctor are in agreement with what works for you, then so be it.

Body is Very Hairy, Head is Very Bald

Most of my hair on the top is gone except for some baby fuzz, and very thin on the sides and back. Will I see benefit from the use of minoxidil or propecia?

PS: my body is very hairy (face, chest, back, etc) will taking any of these medications increase body hair?

Since I hardly have any donor hair on my head, is body hair transplant a possibility? Where can I get good information on this subject?

Thanks for your assistance.

Best regards

MonkeyThe medications of topical minoxidil or systemic Propecia (finasteride 1mg) should not cause more hair to appear on your already hairy body. If you have a full Norwood Class 6 or 7 balding pattern, then chances are that these medications may not help. The marginal edges are where such patterns may see benefit, but you need to get a good doctor to help. Body hair transplants are not the solution (see Body Hair Transplantation for more). To see a Class 7 patient who had enough donor hair to cover his balding head, see Is Hair Transplantation too Risky for Older Men? Each person has different hair characteristics and densities, so you need to be evaluated to find out where you stand.

Botox at Hair Parties for women

This is beyond my imagination and not reasonable. Botox used in some form to enhance hair or injected into the scalp to reduce scalp sweating.

My Body Hair Has Become Finer Since I Dyed My Scalp Hair Years Ago

Hi doc, i am 17 years old now and i know this sounds completely crazy but years ago i dyed my hair and now its gone thin and flat and lighter, but before i dyed my hair i used to have very thick body hair as well around my legs, chest and face.

But now my body hair has become so much finer like my head hair is. I am just wondering if there is any correlation between this, because i dyed my head hair and my body hair has become finer to match my head hair? i cannot even grow a full beard anymore like i used to be able to it is really weird.

You had a full beard at 17 years old? What you’re seeing is probably more of a coincidence rather than a correlation. Dyeing the hair does not usually cause thinning, particularly if it was done on the scalp and the loss is seen on your body.

If you are concerned about hair loss and changes to your body hair, you need to see a doctor for an examination. Maybe it is hormone related. Maybe you have an diagnosed medical condition. Anything is a possibility, but the hair dye is not likely the issue.

Bride-to-Be Received SMP Before Her Wedding to Cover Her Thinning Scalp (with Photos)

This patient is getting married soon and wanted her hair to look thicker quickly for her upcoming June wedding date. She was very concerned about not looking her best and wore her hair up (in a sort of bun) every time she went out to cover her thinning scalp. She could not imagine wearing her hair up in a bun for her wedding, and her husband-to-be preferred her to let her hair down. She came to us to have Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) done, and she was then able to take her hair out of the bun and walk around with the hairstyle of her choosing.

SMP is an excellent treatment for thinning hair and she saw results the day she started the process. That is the best part of this process — the speed of seeing results, most times on the very first visit.

My Dermatologist Doesn’t Believe That Mites Can Cause Hair Loss

Dr. Rassman,
I know you have written about demodex mites on this site in the past. A quick search of the blog revealed two times you discussed it with readers and the possibility that it could lead to hair loss when mites multiplied in great numbers. I for one agree with you… my derm not so much. She like many doctors in the field, believes that it s just a myth and that they do not lead to hair loss, rosacea and acne (in some cases of course, not all).

I have strange hair loss and papules that have appeared in my brows for over 12 years now and steroid creams have only exacerbated the condition. I believe I might have a mite infestation (as I have researched the topic extensively through various medical journals) and although my symptoms are rare, there have been documented cases much like mine. My problem is my derm doesn’t believe it’s even a factor. She says even if we do a skin scrape test to look for mites (by my insistence of course) and she finds them in increase numbers it doesn’t mean anything and furthermore that there is no known drugs to treat it. What are your thoughts? I wanted to know if you could recommend any derms that might be open to recognizing/treating demodex? I reside in the near the LA area.I mean after all is demodicidosis just a made up condition? Doesn’t add up!

It seems you are insistent on proving your dermatologist wrong. Maybe you are right. I haven’t personally treated any one with demodex mites. I did write in past that it may cause localized hair loss if there’s an abundance of mites around the follicle, but that is more of my educated guess. In general, demodex mites are considered benign and it do not cause hair loss.

If you really believe you have the mites on your eyebrow and you are not satisfied with your doctor, find a doctor who will listen. If you really want to know, find someone who can diagnose your condition with skin scrapes, etc (as you state). At least you will know. I don’t know if there is a definitive treatment, but I am sure you are savvy enough to search out on the Internet for resources.

Burning Sensation on Hairline

My scalp on the left side of the hair line has had a feeling of burning off and on for the past 6 months and in the area the hair line is thinning and receding. I am 19 male and was just wondering if it is normal to feel pain if you are going bald geneticly.

Male pattern hair loss is not physically painful. The burning sensation may be secondary to an inflammatory process or an underlying medical condition. You should see a medical doctor for a correct diagnosis.
