17 y/o on finasteride 3 months

Young men with recent hair loss, like this 17-year-old male, most often are very sensitive to finasteride and can get a complete reversal in a very short period as shown here. This is an amazingly good response.

I’m Terrified to Use My Prescription for Finasteride

Ive been sitting with my prescription to fin all week and not taken it because Im terrified of the side effects. Ive been doing a ton of reading on it and it seems any side effect is rare. Im also legitimately seeing regrowth in my buddy who told me to go for it. How often have you seen side effects with this over the years? What are some things I should look for should I give in and start?

Im not sure why I am so worried.

If you talk yourself into side effect, the side effects will be 100% nocebo type effect. But if you did as my son did (he just took it and never gave it a thought), he did notice in a week that his sex drive increased significantly and he then called me about it. Normally, negative side effects, when you subtract the placebo group, is under 2% of men taking the drug.

I am 18 and am now losing my hair and worried about the sexual side effects of Propecia

The internet has spread a great deal of information and misinformation about Propecia (finasteride) which is much over-blown. You need to put the decision in perspective. The risk of these sexual side effects are between 2-4% depending upon the sources you read. My son has been on this drug for 15 year and found an increased sexual drive, not a decreased sexual drive which his girlfriend appreciated very much. How often do you hear about an increased sexual drive? Answer: very, very rarely.

If you were one of the unlucky men to get the sexual side effect, 99+ % of these men find that the side effects go away within 2 weeks upon stopping the drug. Some very small percentage report long term sexual side effects; however these risks are very, very infrequent (less than 1% of the 2-4% people who get negative side effects that persists). Many of the people who reported these sexual side effects may have had sexual dysfunction (normally present in 30% of men 40, 40% of men 40, 50%+ in men over 50) so it is easy to blame this drug for sexual side effects when reduced sexual drive is unfortunately, a sign of aging in many men. Rarely do we see this in 19 year old men, however, you can have a placebo effect if you believe you will be one of them.

The real decision before you, of course, is the problem of progressive balding which this drug is very effective in treating in men of your age. It even reverses the hair loss in many men under 20. You are clearly in the drivers seat, so be careful about what you read and put everything you research into a proper perspective.

Immunotherapy may halt diabetes

In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks cell in the pancreas that make insulin. For half a year, 21 patients received injections of an “insulin precursor molecule” every few weeks. A year later, those who received the treatment when compared with the control group, were able to stabilize their insulin levels. This is early but exciting stuff (source: New Scientist, August 2017)

In the News – ABC Looks at the Future of Hair Loss Treatments

Snippet from the article:

By the age of 35, two-thirds of American men experience some degree of measurable hair loss, and by the age of 50, approximately 85 percent have significantly thinning hair, according to the American Hair Loss Association.

Given those numbers, finding a cure for baldness has become the holy grail among scientists everywhere.

ABC News goes over 4 potential balding treatments, once again throwing the word “cure” around. The methods they explain (in slideshow form!) are still in the research phase.

These are the remnants of the scabs (crusts) that you did not wash off. They are now filling up with water and are elevated. They should easily wash off with a good shampoo and gentle rubbing with your fingertips. I never see this problem in our patients because we wash off the crusts the day of and the day after the surgery so that they never form.

In the News – Bimatoprost Scalp Failed to Provide Sufficient Efficacy

Snippet from the article:

A mid-stage trial of Allergan’s hair loss treatment Bimatoprost Scalp also failed to provide sufficient efficacy to proceed to a late-stage study, and the company said it will be extending the mid-stage development program.

I found the above tidbit buried within an article about Allergan’s delay of their eye drug to treat age-related macular degeneration. Many folks were hoping bimatoprost (the eyelash treatment also known as Latisse) used on the scalp would be the next FDA approved hair loss treatment, but it seems that will be delayed for some time.

In the News – Do Balding Men Have Sleeping Hair?

Snippet from the article:

It sounds more like an explanation that would be used by nursery children than respected scientists, but researchers have found that rather than losing their hair altogether, people who are going bald are suffering from “sleeping” hair follicles.

Trichologists have discovered that hair follicles on the scalp can become trapped in a resting state where they do not grow new hair, leading to thinning.

They now claim to have identified a way of waking the follicles up again to help restore a fuller head of hair to people who are going bald.

We have long believed that the stem cells that eventually grow into hair are probably still present in many people. Are they really dead in the balding man or can they be restarted by finding some defect in the pathway to the creation of an anagen hair? We really do not know this, so is it reasonable to call this sleeping hair?

L’Oreal in Paris carried out the research, and they’re reportedly working on a shampoo or cream to be a used as a new hair loss treatment. No time frame has been announced so far on this treatment, though.
