Satire – Hair Loss More Painful Than Childbirth

From my favorite satire site, The Onion:

According to a study released Wednesday by the California Pain Medicine Center, subjects suffering from male- pattern baldness were found to experience a level of physical pain at least seven times more intense than that experienced by women during childbirth.

If you’ve visited The Onion site before, you know they have some hilarious articles and photo captions there. And if you’ve got some time to laugh, other classics include:

What do I do about my scabs now 9 days after my hair transplant? (photo)

These scabs (crusts) should have been prevented with good washing techniques the day and the day after surgery. Once they form, you run a risk of graft loss until 14 days at which time you can get them out by leaving a shampoo on the area for 10 minutes, getting it water logged, and then gently rub them off with your finger tips. Repeat this daily until the area is crust free. I take it that you are a female as the hairline shape, a concave shape, is the classic female pattern.

Dr Rassman’s Opinion About the Latest in Body Hair Transplantation?

Good day Dr. Rassman,
First, I want to thank you for having this blog. I find it very useful; I visit this blog regularly.

My question: From some of your previous answers, it seems that you are not a proponent of body hair transplants, and you have given good reasons why. However, if it would be all right, may I ask your opinion of some of the latest works, with body hair transplants?

I am familiar with the body transplants that are being done. I am softening my position on them in very special situations. I met a man yesterday who does not have enough donor hair for the crown, but has gorilla hair on his back. He is aware of the limitation in telogen hairs and nevertheless wants to have his back hair moved to the crown. He is realistic and reasonable and I will therefore do this for him. So you see, I am open minded on the subject and as always, will do what my patient needs if the requests are reasonable.

Scalp micro pigmentation quality and recommendation

I can’t comment about Europe, but we are the best traditional Scalp Micropigmentation in California here: https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/ . I just published an article about a Scalp Micropigmentation breakthrough with a new system which we just started using and are the first in North America to have it:

“We introduced a new needleless microjet injector that uses laser pulse energy to inject tattoo pigments for Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) directly through the skin without a needle”. It also has the advantage of a one-pass use, which means that when the pigments are deposited, it is permanent and doesn’t have to be repeated.

It has the advantage of an almost painless experience, eliminating the need for anesthesia.that has no needles and does not require anesthesia. Right now, there is not much availability of this technology but I am sure it will change soon. We are offering it to a limited number of people.

DUPA (Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia) and genetic balding

I was wondering if someone who started with DUPA can later on develop male pattern baldness in there life? i have a second question if i may? In those DUPA patients who react to finasteride, was their progression moving faster than who did not react to finasteride?

We really don’t understand DUPA but yes, I have seen people with genetic balding who have DUPA, so the reverse is highly possible.

Terrific Scalp Micropigmentation Story (SMP)

I have had more transplant in the past than I care to mention including the old fashion scalp reductions and have been stuck with weaves and wigs ever since. The SMP procedure is the most marvelous procedure ever. It got rid of all scarring from my transplants including the scalp reduction scar. I am a very successful businessman, who before I had the SMP put me in the prison of Wigs and the like. My confidence is now solid and the procedure has given me my, as Sinatra would say, SWAGGER back in life! It has been a life changing experience and I got a ‘get out of jail’ free pass for life.

Dutasteride vs. Finasteride, Which Is Better?

I am a 20 year old Indian male with Norwood 2- Norwood 3 hair loss. As per blood tests, my DHT levels are 1410 which is twice of normal range (250-990). My dermatologist usually prescribes Finasteride 1-mg, but has recommended taking Dutasteride 0.5-mg instead due to unusually high DHT. She said this is for cases like mine. My question is this: what is the difference between Finasteride 1-mg and Dutasteride 0.5-mg in terms of efficacy and potential side effects? Have you ever recommended Dutasteride ? Trials indicate it is far more potent than finasteride.

Finasteride is probably safer than Dutasteride which is known to cause sterility in young men. I never pay attention to the DHT levels as I don’t believe it makes any difference in my initial recommendations.

Scalp Stitches from Sports Injury — Will My Hair Regrow There?

I recently had a sports injury on right above the hair line in the center of my scalp. Six stitches were put in and later removed. it has been over a 2 months now and very little hair growth has occured since the injury. The scar is about an inch long vertically and about 1/4 inch wide. I was wondering if there were any ointments or other treatments other than a hair transplant that I could use to encourage hair growth. Thank you in advance for your timely response.

Based on what you describe, I doubt hair will grow on the 1″ x 0.25″ scar, and while there are no medications or products that will cause hair growth on this tissue, hair transplanted into the scar will work in most cases. A small scar like what you are describing should not cost a lot to get it fixed. First, I would wait out a period of 6 months before concluding that it is a permanent problem. Without examining you, I can not tell.

Ecrinal

I started to loose some hair. I decided to buy some shampoo against hairloss and i found one at the pharmacies called ecrinal. On the box it says that it contains ingredients of lipidic nature that come from a gland located at the base of horses’ mane…tricholopids and A.N.P. So i’m wondering if this shampoo may actually be effective?
Thanks.

Mister EdFirstly, please see my previous post about Mane-Tail-Groom. There appears to be considerable support for this product in Europe. But that product is for horses and some humans use it on themselves — what you’re asking about is a shampoo for men and women that has an extract from a horse mane, right?

Dr. Pak first reviewed your question and in researching it, it was obvious that he knew nothing about this family of products and he wrote: I do not know of any “tricholopids” or “A.N.P.” (I don’t even know what that stands for). Furthermore, I am not a veterinarian and don’t know what relevance a horse’s mane has to do with human hair growth. I am curious what would make a horse’s mane better than that of a lion, perhaps? Or what about a hairy monkey? More importantly, how did they get these “glands”? How many horses’ glands were sacrificed for the sake of hair? I wonder what Pamela Anderson would say as the spoke person for PETA.

I think Dr. Pak has a humorous writing style, so I thought I’d try get a smile from you by posting his response. The serious answer to your question is — I have no idea.
