Can I Have My Dad’s Hairline But Different Balding Pattern?

Hello Doctor,

I am a male in my late 20’s and had a question regarding the relation between your hairline and whether or not you will go bald like your father. Looking at past photos of my father when he was in his early 20’s I have his hairline rather than my mother’s. However, I seem to have more hair (pretty full head with just a little loss around temple area) than my father did when he was in his late 20’s. My father is now in his late 60’s and has just a little on top (basically bald). My mom is in her late 50’s and has very thick full head hair.

Is it possible to inherit the same hairline as your father but not go bald like him?

Hair loss is genetic, but it does not always follow your father’s pattern either in the hairline or elsewhere on your scalp. It is just that in general your father’s hairline/recession is a good reference point, as may be your grandfather on both sides of the family and possibly your uncles as well. But as you are finding out, it is not always the case. Anything is possible.

If you’re fine with your current hair situation, keep your fingers crossed that it doesn’t progress… or talk to a physician about medication to slow it down.

My Son Is Balding at 19

I am the mother of an 19 year old son, who is now experiencing the effects of heritary male pattern baldness. My father was bald, and my son’s biological father is bald. In fact baldness on both sides of the family goes back for several generations. Poor kid; he is really distressed about this. I tried to explain to my son that just because he is loosing some hair on the frontal area does not mean that girls will not be interested in him. Of course he always says, “That is such a MOM answer!” My new husband and I live in Utah and our communication with my son is mostly over the phone to California where he lives attending college. We told him to go see a Pharmacist but I am sure they will just recommend some over-the-counter cream like Rogaine. Also he likes to work out and has been drinking these shakes to help him bulk up. Are those bad adding to premature baldness as well? What do you recommend? Should he contact is primary care physician? Should he see someone in the Santa Clara, CA area? Please help.

Can I See a Trichologist to Diagnose Hair Loss?

Would trichologists be a good place to go to diagnose genetic hair loss. Consultation with examination is a bit expensive so I’d like your opinion on it. I’m seeing one in 2 days and what he plans to do is take some of my hair and examine it under the microscope. Would you have any idea on the effectiveness for diagnosis with this method vs the scalp mapping for miniaturization? I’m 26 asian male with a full head of hair (although not as thick or a lot compared to in HS)Is it still a good idea to see these specialist anyways even though Im not exhibiting any clear observational signs of balding (my diabetic father thinned and had bad hair loss at 46 and his younger brother balded in his teens…grandfather on both sides have hair although diabetic mother on father’s side has extremely thin hair pretty much balding)

I can not tell you what the trichologist will see or what he/she is looking for. Without miniaturization studies I do not believe that hair loss patterns for genetic hair loss can be anticipated. The miniaturization study is a microscopic examination of your scalp. If your trichologist is doing this, and knows what to look for, then you’re a step in the right direction.

My Transplanted Hairs Don’t Look Like My Natural Hairs!

Hi Doc,

I am 27, and stupidly got two procedures (~800 grafts each) done about three years ago. Have been taking propecia since the age of 18 and just started on rogaine a few months ago. I guess I’m about a Norwood 3, moving towards a 4 (except no thinning on crown).

Anyway, the problem is that the transplanted hairs came in much thicker and more wiry than the natural hairs, and they were not always individual hairs, so I’m about a year into getting them removed as best I can via electrolysis. The skin is slightly scarred, but I’m unsure exactly how it will end up looking once it gets time to really heal and start to fade.

I’m trying to weigh my options for proceeding as my hairline continues to recede, and am deciding if I should continue to get the rest of the plugs removed as my natural hair goes or if it’s worth more transplantation but done with more care. The question is really do you have any knowledge about different types of hair responding differently to transplantation? My hair is dark brown and curly, would it be more susceptible to coming in thick and kinky than someone with finer straight hair? Because the last thing I want to do is get more transplants and have them be obviously fake and just compound my problem!

As I’ve said many times before, the good news about a hair transplant is that it is forever… but if you have a bad hair transplant, then you probably aren’t looking at that news as being too good. Even removing the hairs may still leave a scar and cause an unnatural hairline, as you’re noticing with the electrolysis. Something concerning me though is that you’ve had 2 procedures at 27 years old of what you describe as “plugs”. I hope you aren’t referring to the ugly, old hair plugs that you commonly see in men that had surgery decades ago. Perhaps you’re just using the wrong term and you meant “grafts”, which are made up of 1-4 hairs. Modern hair transplants will look natural and the hair shouldn’t change character or color.

There are still options even though you may have a bad transplant, but BaldingBlog is not a place for second opinions. You’ll need to have an evaluation to see what options are available to you since each repair case is unique, so you should see a hair transplant physician (just don’t go to the one you already had two surgeries with, obviously). Can I Trust Sites That Sell Propecia Online?

Hello.. My question is regarding Propecia, the cost, and comparison.. I came across a website while I searched for Propecia prices [link removed] and I was wondering if this would be a site I can trust?

Also, there is a Generic- Finasteride for a more affordable price.. What is the difference between the two and do they provide the SAME amount of benefits…

Legal issueI think that’s yet another site based in Canada that sells prescription drugs to US residents without a doctor’s prescription required. That is against the law. As such, I can’t vouch for any site that sells medication online illegally. There are many sites that do this, and I don’t even know how this stuff gets through US Customs without more scrutiny.

So can you trust a site that sells these drugs illegally and without any way to tell if it’s even the real deal? I guess that’s up to you. If you get ripped off (fake medication, incomplete order, etc), who are you going to complain to if the company doesn’t offer you any restitution? These are things I’d consider, but ultimately it’s your choice to make.

Generic finasteride in 5mg size is available at any pharmacy in the US, but the 1mg generic isn’t sold here yet due to patent protection. I believe the patent is set to expire in late 2013, at which time I’d have to assume the generic Propecia will be available in the US. Until then, you just need to cut the generic 5mg pill into pieces. The costs are incredibly cheap that way… and legal.

Do nasal steroids like rhinocort prescribed for allergies make or cause hair loss worse?

It shouldn’t, unless you are using the medication for a long period of time at high doses and have the genes for hair loss.

Can low zinc cause hair loss and low libido?

I wana add zinc. I heard its good for libido. Some people say its good for the hair and i heard from other places its can cause hair shedding.

Yes, if your body is zinc deficient, then it can cause hair loss. I can’t comment on your libido. If you take zinc, make sure that you don’t overdose it.

Necrosis from a poor hair transplant technique and treatment that works

In the previous post, I showed a patient with necrosis of the scalp created by a surgeon who placed too many hair grafts too close into the scalp. Here is a similar patient with a scar, that I found on the internet, which shows the best treatment for this and the final results after the balloon expansion was completed.
