What do you think of my hairline design?

If you came to me as your surgeon, I would turn you down because your hairline is excellent as is. The surgery will not match it and changing the shape is not a good idea. Your temple peaks are perfect, but in your design you are making them straight up and curving the frontal hairline in a more feminine shape

What Happened to the Removable SMP Pigment?

Hi,
I read in March of this year on this blog you were soon to be trialling a new SMP pigment that was possibly reversible in one laser treatment. Are there are further developments with this?

Thank you

The initial laser-reversible pigment we obtained was tested on a very limited basis and in small cases. Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain more than the test supplies and have been unable to find a substitute… so it’s not something we pursued much further.

We currently only use permanent pigment in SMP sessions.

High Metabolism and Female Hair Loss?

Hi,
I have seen your website and I have a question to ask. I just want someone’s opinion on some thing. I’m 26 years old (female) and I have hair fall and I have been to few doctors and I have blood test done for so many reasons and they all show normal. I still experience hair fall and I’m still trying to figure out what to do. I was told that my hormones are very high I want to know is it anything related in having high metabolism? Is their any way to be tested or checked for high metabolism? Please let me know about this soon.

Thank You

A high metabolism should not cause hair loss.

You are stabbing in the dark to find answers, and unfortunately I won’t be able to help here either. I don’t know what tests you had done, their results, family history, etc. Go back to the doctors you consulted with and get answers from them.

What If I Take Propecia, But Don’t Need It Yet?

If you take proscar 5mg tabs & cut it into 4’s, will it work the same as propecia ? That’s what i’ve been doing. It’s cheaper. Also, if you take this & don’t need it, could it make you lose your hair ??

Proscar is the same medication as Propecia — finasteride. They just come in different dosages.

Never take a drug that you do not need. Get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to find out if you need it and if you have genetic balding that needs to be treated. Taking Propecia when you do not need it may have some long term problem that was heretofore not discovered yet. Why take any risks?

Hives, Papules, Pimples — What Could They Be?

I just came across the diagnosis of trichostasis spinulosa, which I have seen in my practice on occasion and have failed to come up with a diagnosis.

eMedicine states, “In trichostasis spinulosa (TS), clusters of vellus hairs become embedded within hair follicles, with resultant elevated, dark, spiny papules on the face or trunk. Trichostasis spinulosa frequently is discovered as an incidental finding, and often it is confused with keratosis pilaris or acne comedones.

This condition is more common in men, but does not cause risk for the people having it, just some cosmetic deformities of varying degrees. To see the various forms that it takes, see Google Image Search. Maybe you have seen these on your own body and wondered about it.

What is Dandruff

Dr. Thomas Dawson wrote a good description of Dandruff in the Hair Transplant Forum May/June 2017 issue as follows:

WHAT IS DANDRUFF?
Normal scalp has few flakes and healthy appearing, smooth skin. Dandruff is characterized by loosely adherent flakes and itching. Specifically, dandruff has no inflammation and is confined to the scalp, while seborrheic dermatitis has yellowish, piled adherent flakes that can extend beyond the scalp to beard, moustache, and eyebrows accompanied by visible inflammation.1 Seborrheic dermatitis is more than superficial flaking, including hyperproliferation, excess lipids, and poorly differentiated corneocytes across the scalp.4 Dandruff requires three factors: fungi (Malassezia), sebum, and individual susceptibility. While there remains much debate in the current medical literature, upon review, the vast majority of evidence points at the very least to a fungal “initiator,” most likely Malassezia fungi.

What is the Cause for My Female Hair Loss?

34y/o female, on birth control, no visible medical conditions that I am aware. Started losing hair about 7 years ago once graduated from college and ended a three year engagemenet under stressful lconditions. Hair loss has progressedandrecentlynoticed the amount of thinning as I had a head full of thick hair. Now thinner, and every night shwer, there is always some hair in drain. Ihave tired multivitamins, Kevis, Advecia, and Hairgenesis….the vitamins helped but still falling out. I dont knowwha tto do….I am 5’2″, weight about 115-120 pounds. I was addicted to laxatives at one time but have since recovered. Could I have a vit. deficiancy? hormone problem dueto birth control? My thyroid checked out fine. I dont want to be 40 and bald. I have no children, no otehr medications.

It is hard to know exactly what the cause and solutions might be via email without first meeting you. My suggestion would be to please read my many answers to women with hair loss. I discuss the medical work-up required for women, plus the causes for it. A good doctor to check you out and a good hair doctor will go along way to help you focusing upon your hair loss problem. I am sorry to sound evasive, but hair loss in women is a difficult differential diagnosis.

How Can I Tell if My Bald Spot Was From a Chemical Burn?

(female) I just noticed this past week that I have a bald spot in one area of my head, the top left. The area is smooth and tender. (Tenderness may be a result of the products I’ve been applying to stimulate growth.) I am assuming that this baldness occurred after a no-lye chemical relaxer was applied, since I now vaguely remember a patch of hair coming out at that time. How can I know what caused this area to become bald and when will the hair grow back if it will? By the way it looks, it seems that nothing is happening.

Smooth skin suggests a burn (it could be other conditions, but with your memory of history a burn sounds likely). See a good dermatologist and you may get some good insights into the bald spot. If it will grow back (not a third degree burn or one that killed the hair follicles) it may grow back in 3-6 months.
