Hi, I have caused extensive damage to my hair through the use of a hot straightening iron. I am a 31 year old male who had minimal recession at the front and thick hair all over. My hair is now damaged and thinned all over from the hot iron and has recessed at the front dramatically in 6 months due to the damage. I have regrowth coming through but not really at the front from the damage. Is it wise to start propecia at this point I’ve stayed off using it waiting to see where the hair may grow back but after 6 months have not seen much at the front.
Thanks
You need a diagnosis as to the degree that genetic balding may be present. I would want to know where the damage is — is it limited to a particular area? There are many things that an examination of your scalp would show me, so rather than shoot from the hip, I would suggest that you go to a hair expert or dermatologist to work through the problem with you. It sounds bad, too serious to be treated over the internet.

This blog is very informative, but I really think you should tone the humor down. I notice you make a lot of jokes about balding. There is nothing funny about it!! Especially not today, when there is quite a strong stigma about receding hairlines & thinning hair…i.e. (the creepy old man stigma). People kill themselves every day because of hair loss and I truly believe that there is a strong correlation between suicidal behavior and hair loss.
I think people who are affected by the disfigurement of hair loss, may also suffer from other health problems due to how the extreme stress of the condition affects their entire body and their activity levels. I for one, have experienced major health problems since I started losing hair. I guarantee you most people who commit suicide have some type of hair loss.
If the person losing hair feels disfigured because of the condition, it is one of the most serious medical issues one can suffer from because of how it wreaks absolute havoc on everything and tends to cause a “domino effect” where other organ systems get affected and fail over time (perhaps prematurely) due to the extreme stress hair loss causes. 2% of the male population doesn’t bald….that’s 40,000 people out of a city with 2,000,000. If you think about it, in today’s society..that’s not really that rare; plus, those are the people that are more likely to get the good jobs, be treated favorably, etc.
It’s survival of the fittest at it’s worst! I’ve noticed it is EXTREMELY hard (almost impossible) to get hired for a new job or get a supervisory position if you have any thinning/balding. These are all reasons why there is nothing funny about hair loss and why I hope every day that there is a treatment that can truly halt progressive hair loss.
I never make fun of people who are balding. With close to 10,000 posts on this blog, there are times we feel the need to inject some light-hearted humor. If I have offended anyone here with a particular post, please let me know! In the end, I have great respect for them and empathy for their experience. Only about half of the male population will experience some type of balding, but every part of us is connected. Our overall health reflects many organ systems and our mental health influences our body functions.
Hair loss is one of those things that men have no control over. For some men who take charge of their destiny, they exercise for better body health, eat well to prevent various diseases from impacting their body, don’t smoke, and educate themselves to shape their professional lives; however, other than taking a pill that may or may not control their hair loss, balding is a process that undermines a man’s self esteem. For some men, it even gives them the sense of hopelessness. I believe that is what you are talking about. This is why I love my hair restoration medical practice — I can help men manage their hair loss process, in turn giving them back their self esteem.

The average person loses 100-150 hairs per day, most noticable when it is washed or brushed. If you believe you are losing hair or thinning out your hair, you should have a doctor who specializes in this field evaluate you. Sometimes, although rare, genetic hair loss can start in the early or mid-teens. I think you need peace of mind, so seeing a good doctor is important.
I am 34 year old African American female. The top of my scalp is sore, thinning and I can not get rid of the dandruff. Is this part of Alopecia? Also, Why do I have soreness at the the top of my scalp and I believe thinning? What can I do for the soreness and thinning? I relax my hair approx every 4 Months. Please help. Thanks.
Chemicals that relax your hair for a long period of time, may cause skin irritation and/or hair loss. Drandruff treatment are found in every pharmacy and you need to experiment with each until you find one that works well for you.

The article calls out Ozympic as producing hair loss; however, I suspect that when people lose weight rapidly, hair loss is often a known side effect of a “negative nitrogen balance”, essentially losing your body proteins and fat. The body is intrinsically smart, so it knows that when you are losing weight, it has to sacrifice functions that are not critical to living, and hair growth is one of those dispensable functions. This is especially true in men with genetic hair loss, as weight loss can trigger genetic hair loss or accelerate what is already going on.
I am a 23 year old woman and over the past couple of months my hair has become very very thin and I loss alot of it in the shower everyday. I know the hair loss is not due to having a child because my son is already two and I know it isn’t due to my health. I go to the gym anywhere between 3 and 5 days a week, I eat healthy and I even take daily vitamins. About six months ago I got off of the pill and 2 months ago I had a IUD put in. The only thing I could think of is the hair loss is either because I got off the pill or because I got an IUD. I need help. Should I get back on the pill?? Should I use rogaine for woman?? Please help me before I go bald!
Ask your doctor if the IUD has some hormone it is releasing and to do a complete medical work-up for hair loss on you as well. I did notice that Mirena intrauterine contraception releases a hormone (levonorgestrel) that can cause hair loss. I can not tell you what to do, because I would need to know the results of the medical work-up that I suggested you get. The question I would ask is what are you treating? It could be anything from low iron to genetics.

Is it possible for someone to get a transplant basically without affecting follicles that may be able to be saved still on the hair line without damaging them? I have a very diffuse hairline and am wondering if a good hair transplant doc could like weave transplant hairs in with the current for extra thickness. I think would look pretty good thanks
Transplanting a person with existing hair and transplanting into that area is a problem when the hairs are miniaturized. Miniaturization usually indicates the end of a hair’s life and if a hair transplant is done in these areas, then the hair loss of the miniaturized hairs gets accelerated. If you think about your question, if the hair was not miniaturized, then it would be unlikely to need a hair transplant in that area. I personally believe that if you ‘stabbed’ a good hair follicle, it would just bounce back and grow normally, even if it went through a shed and that is because the stem cells that back up these hairs know that the hair must be there and the hair cycling clock is always ticking on a normal “Terminal’ hair. I have seen some men transplanted who didn’t need a hair transplant and when I measured their hair bulk with the HAIRCHECK instrument, I found increases in hair bulk well above their normal level (using their donor site as a reference). In those young men, I knew that the doctors who did their hair transplants, did them for NO REASON other than MAKE MONEY off the backs of these naive men who didn’t do their research to find a caring, competent and HONEST doctor.

I’m a 43 year old African American female. I’ve used hair products all my adult life. In addition, I wore weaves from braiding and sewing tracks on my hair to gluing tracks on my hair. To braiding my hair as well. I used extensive heat from flat irons to hair dryers. Everything has come to a halt. The top portion of my hair is bald in the crown area of my head in many large spots. I had a small spot for years smack dead in the middle of my crown area and never thought anything of it. Well a month ago my hairstylist noticed the small spot is no longer there. There are huge spots now that is red and is tender. For years my scalp always felt irritated very strange… Even when I brushed my hair my scalp would hurt. I recently got rid of all the hair products that contain Sodium Laurel Sulfate and Sodium Laurel Lereth Sulfate. I purchased all natural shampoos and conditioners.
Well I went to see a Dermatologist. He kept saying something about a band…? Dead hair follicles that will not grow back. Well they did the Biopsy and now I wait. He thinks it might be Lupus of the skin…. WHAT !@&^*()(*_( What is that… My first cousin has Lupus (enternal). I’m stumped…. I am wearing wigs because my hair is not long enough to cover the bald spots… What a mess…. Your thoughts Doctor?
You will know more when the biopsy comes back. If you don’t have Lupus, you have many causes for hair loss all listed in your first paragraph of your email to me. This is a complicated problem that will have to be evaluated with you sitting right in front of me and my obtaining the biopsy from your dermatologist. For more info, look to the Lupus Foundation of America‘s Lupus of the Skin page.
