What happens if I drop my dose of finasteride from 1mg to half the dose?

I don’t know as everyone is different. Many people who drop the dose do just as well at half of the dose. With that said, I just saw a man who dropped the dose from 1mg to a half mg and saw hair loss from the drop. The studies that were done in the 1990s indicated that half the dose was 80% as effective on average as the full dose.

High Side Hairline (Above Ears) — Can It Be Lowered?

hi there,
i’ve been reading some of these articles about high hairlines, and most of them talk about the hairline at the forehead. however, with me, my hairline at my forehead is fine, its the hairline at the side of my head (near my ears) thats high. its been a real issue with me ever since i was a kid and i’d always need long hair to cover it up so that it wouldn’t seem as if i’m balding (which i’m not). my doctor says that i am not vulnerable to balding when i get older. i am an 18 yr old filipino male. and i was wondering if there are any treatments to this surgically/nonsurgically. i’d prefer nonsurgical more than surgical. but if there is anything at all, pls tell me. thx

Some people have a genetic high temple hairline (above ears) which can be treated with hair transplants very effectively. There are no other treatments for this that I know of.

What If I Want a Hair Transplant, But Don’t Want to Take Propecia?

First off, thanks for everything you guys do! Doc I am 26 yrs old and I had several questions. I apologize in advance if any of them are stupid questions! I am closest to Norwood III Vertex, but not completely there yet. I actually have a fair amount of hair on the top, problem is it’s really thin. The back and sides of my hair are complete opposite, they are very thick. I want to do a hair transplant, but is there any point to doing so if I do NOT want to take Propecia? I am open to taking Rogaine. Everybody keeps telling me to wait till my 30’s to get a transplant, since if I do 1 so early now, I will still lose other hair. If this does happen, I just get a 2nd transplant, correct?

The problem with a 26 year old experiencing hair loss is that your balding pattern is in transition. Will you become more advanced in your hair loss? You can try to predict it by performing a miniaturization analysis and see how far back this process goes (see Mapping Your Own Scalp).

Having a hair transplant at age 26 without Propecia on board will just accelerate the hair loss you are likely going to see in the years ahead. Not taking the medication will allow what nature has planned for you to happen. The choice is yours. Rogaine will not offer the same degree of protection. Why keep putting yourself through more hair transplant surgeries as your hair loss progresses if a daily pill could be the solution?

Homeopathic Hair Cures?

Any comments on Dr.Batra, he claims to have cured 70,000 hairloss patients. It supposedly worlds biggest homeopathic chain of clinics. Does homeopathy have any drugs that are proven?

I’m not familiar with Dr. Batra, but homeopathic treatments have been used for years and are claimed to be effective in a variety of ways. Unfortunately, most of these claims are not supported with scientific research and third party studies that do not have a financial interest in the success of the products, are rare. This clearly applies to claims of cures for the treatment of baldness. We can recommend a procedure or treatment only if it is proven to be safe and effective.

What is going on in my donor area

The question I ask is: Is this shock loss or donor site depletion?

How many grafts have you had? This is likely donor site depletion. At 8 months any shock loss will have reversed. If this does not reverse, the only treatment for this that is effective is Scalp Micropigmentation (https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/) which, although it is not hair, will make the donor area look normal. This is something we do all of the time.

How Bald Should Someone Be Before Stopping Toppik?

Hi Doc,

Just wanted to know at what norwood class one should stop using a product like Toppik. I am a class 6 and have noticed that I need to put quite a lot of toppik on my head and it really just looks like a coating of coal dust! Does my hair have to be longer for it to look better? Or do you think I’m putting on too much!

I don’t know if you’re using too much or too little Toppik. I think the answer is really simple — just look at yourself in the mirror or ask someone if it looks too fake or if it looks normal. I really don’t know what to tell you beyond that, as there’s no way for me to tell based on an email if it looks like a “coating of coal dust” or if it blends well enough to be an effective camouflaging product.

Many early Norwood class 6 and 7 use Toppik with great results. The length of hair and hair loss matters, but it is on case by case basis.

What is the Choi Implanter?

I am reading your site with great interest. I have also looked into the Choi procedure, and one well-known Choi advocate in the UK (where I also live) offers what seems to be a reasonable package, in Athens Greece. I was wondering if you could tell me more about the Choi procedure and does it yield the BEST results, with regards to density with least scarring as it is claimed? Why do some people say that FUE is not so effective? Is an “needle implanter” better than the conventional method? What about the use of Choi around the world? For instance USA, Japan, Australia? Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

The Choi implanter is just a surgical tool. It makes some aspects of the transplant easier to perform, especially for those people who did not develop the difficult placing skills with the more traditional transplant tools used throughout the world. An instrument is only as good as the person using it, so I can not package the tool with the technique. The Choi generally requires ‘skinny’ grafts, which tend to dry out more easily, therefore, this instrument requires special skills, different than those that do not have to make the grafts skinny. Some people believe that skinny grafts do not grow as well. I believe that in the right hands, with the years of experience, skinny grafts should grow as well a chubby grafts. The grafts we make are half way between skinny and chubby, just my preference.

The Choi implanter did not develop a following in the United States. In Asia and other parts of the world, it is very popular. I do not believe that it is any better than anything else that the surgeons have perfected in their native countries.

To answer your questions about FUE, I would suggest that you look at the FUE category of this blog.

How Can I Tell if New Hair is Growing After TE?

Hello Dr Rassman, I was wondering how you can tell if new hair is growing. I had Telogen Effluvium starting in october or so and it has stopped and i can only see new growth right at my frontal hair line. I am also using retin A and it gets applied around there so im not sure if it is the retin a regrowing the hair or my hair is growing everywhere. IN SHORT: Is it possible to see new hair growth mid scalp amongst long hair.

Also, Im unclear about when people say hair may not regrow from TE. Is this only if the people were going to bald within the next few years, in other words will hair always grow back from TE so long as you have no predisposition to genetic balding .

With telogen effluvium (TE) you will likely regrow the hair, but in some people it may not always grow back to the full thickness you once had. In your case though, you stated that you are seeing new hair growth. So there you go! If you want to see it under a video microscope, these new hairs show up well. Logically if you are seeing short hair growing amongst long hair that would be new hair growing, right? There is no big secret to seeing hairs grow.

With respect to Retin A, I doubt that is causing the hair growth, as it is an irritant.

What is the normal capacity of the donor area in grafts?

The total donor hair supply usually reflects 25% of your total hair count which is the capacity of the donor area for available hair. This post elaborates on how this is measured: https://baldingblog.com/how-do-you-determine-your-donor-density/. Assuming that the typical Caucasian has 110,000 hairs and 50,000 Follicular Units on his scalp, the number of grafts available are most likely between 50-65% of the Follicular units can be moved in a person with a hair thickness that is average (60 microns thick). If your hair is finer than that, the number of grafts plummets.

How Do Hair Follicles Become DHT Sensitive?

According to what I read regarding Male pattern Baldness It is a problem of Hair Follicles being sensitive to DHT rather than excessive DHT.

  1. What does this really mean?

  2. How did I develop this condition?

  3. Is there any way to reverse this sensitivity?

  4. If not then why aren’t researchers and scientists working on it?

  5. Why is it so that DHT gets attached to my scalp follicles more than other parts of my body like my face?

  6. Does DHT lead to bone growth?

Note: I’m losing hair and I have a receding hairline and I’m thinning on the top. I still don’t have a proper beard.

DHT is a trigger in people who have the genes for balding. Each hair on your head has a life cycle (usually 3 years) and it sheds and regrows over and over again, unless, it has a limit genetically set on how many cycles you get. Some men (in the balding areas) have limits on these cycles, so when that limit is hit, the hairs miniaturize and eventually fall out. Finasteride slows this process down and is the ONLY medication available that is known to work.
