If the graft was placed upside down and it grew for months, it might have grown to full length inside your scalp at a rate of about 1/2 inch per month. I am sure that your doctor remove the hair that came from the cyst (and it most likely was created from an ingrown hair).

Time Between Minoxidil Applications?
how long is minoxidil need to be apart after a application. Is 8 hours apart ok?
The recommended application for minoxidil is twice a day. I suppose 12 hours apart is best, but that may not be practical to fit into your day.
Many years ago I had a dairy farm with nearly 150 cows. If you think about nursing mothers, they feed their babies every few hours and get their best milk production based upon the need to keep up with the close feeding schedules. For my farm, I figured that we would get the best milk production if we milked the cows every 8 hours, but I could not afford to do that and few workers would cooperate with me on this idea. Most of my farming neighbors started milking at 7am and then at 3pm so that they could have breakfast and dinner with the family on a reasonable time schedule that coordinated with their childrens school schedule. By spacing the milking 16 hours at night, the cows filled up with milk for overnight, which in the world of ‘biologic feedback’, they were telling their bodies to slow down milk production. As a compulsive person and to solve the problem, I decided to milk the cows at 3am and 3pm, but because of my heavy surgical schedule I just could not do that. Instead, I woke my wife up at 3am so she could milk the cows until 6am at which time the day crew came in and took over. What I’m saying is, life is full of compromises. If you can’t get that perfect “every 12 hours” between minoxidil applications, then yes, 8 hours apart (like the dairy farmer) should be fine.
And for the record, I am presently divorced.

Hair Grew Back After Many Years
I have been bald since I was 30. I am now 73. There was no hair to speak of (you call it a Class 6 Pattern according to your book). I finished my chemotherapy for prostate cancer and my hair grew back. Any comments?
The chemotherapy must have taken away your ability to make testosterone and it’s byproduct, DHT. That would account for a regrowth of your hair (as if your testicles were removed, in the chemical sense). It would be unusual to grow your hair back completely if you have been that bald for so many years (I’m assuming it has been at least 20 years), unless there was still hair present that was heavily suppressed by the testosterone you had circulating around. I would love to see before and after photos of your hair growth.
Topical DHT Blocker as Effective as Propecia with Less Side Effects?
An earlier question brought up an article about a topical DHT inhibitor at HairLossTalk:
The doctor interviewed in the article made some pretty impressive claims. Paraphrasing:
- His topical DHT blocker is as effective as Propecia as long as you could apply it to the affected area
- Downside of topical: It’s more of a pain to apply. It would be really difficult to apply to entire scalp, whereas Propecia blocks DHT everywhere.
- Upside of topical: it only blocks DHT near the scalp, having less of an affect on serum DHT levels. This decreases the chances of side-effects.
The claims seem to make sense to me, but this kind of stuff can sometimes be counterintuitive.
- Do you agree with his general evaluation of topical vs. serum DHT blockers?
- Do you have an opinion on the specific topical solution he is talking about?
We have written about topical DHT blockers before here. The doctor in the article you referenced is a web-based provider of compounded, off-label medicaments for hair loss. The use of spironolactone has been a mainstay as a treatment for female hair loss when taken orally, but there is no real evidence that it works and many studies show the controversy, saying either it works or does not work. It is tied to the belief of the doctor, but you must keep in mind that doctors who recommend it profit from its use. When you take such medications and convert it to skin (topical) use, there is no guarantee that it works, if it is absorbed through the skin and just where the medication works (if it does work at all). It is easy to make such compounds and when a doctor puts his concoction into a cream or topical, there is an implication that it is safe and effective. Spironolactones are known antiandrogens and as such should work in men, but if taken orally, men will have significant secondary sexual side effects, such as loss of libido and problems with sustaining erections (when and if they get them). The question one should ask is whether this medication has sexual side effects. Without proper scientific studies, we really can not tell.
I never understood why men chase this stuff when the rare sexual side effects from Propecia (finasteride) have been measured. I would guess that if spironolactone was taken orally, they would dwarf the side effects of Propecia in men, yet men somehow want to experiment and may find themselves swamped with side effects or ineffective treatment losing valuable time on fixing hair loss with what is known to work. Topical spironolactone has a bad smell associated with it which is claimed to have been successfully addressed by this doctor, so I don’t know if this medication stinks from the aroma or its success and without good science behind it, it becomes a real gamble with the belief of one doctor who makes his living putting topical medications together.
Hair Length Needed to Cover a Donor Scar?

I was just wondering about donor scars. How high up is the donor area on the back of the scalp? Also in your opinion how long does the remaining hair usually need to grow to get a good cover-up over the scar? I prefer to wear my hair short but i was just curious to know what the norm is for most patients that go through the HT surgery.

The donor area starts at the base of the skull (feel the prominent bone on the bottom of the skull) and go up a distance of 2.5-3 inches high. That is the donor area (see Norwood 7 art at right).
Scars from strip surgery vary in width. On average about 95% of patients will have a less than a 3mm high scar after one procedure and less than a 6mm high scar after the second procedure. Scarring varies and I see many patients who keep a very small scar (under 3 mm) for as many as 3 procedures. Likewise, some patients will stretch their scars more than others, and the scar could be 1cm high in the rare case. The wider the scar, the longer the hair has to be to cover it. Generally, the width of the scar (height) will require almost twice the hair length to cover it well, but that depends upon the hair thickness and the color / contrast between hair and skin color. On occasion, there is no significant visible scar in strip surgery and this is even more common when a trichophytic closure is used to close the donor area. In these patients, the scalp hair length can be 2-3mm long without showing anything. Having the FUE technique used will change the visible scar risk radically.
Topical vs oral finaseride, how do they compare?
Would you say you’ve noticed good results with topical vs. oral finasteride? I just had a chat with my pcp today and he seemed to think topical was less effective.
The Golden standard is the pill which I suspect means that the topical is compared to it as how effective it is compared to the pill. I don’t think that is 1:1, somewhat less

Hair Loss After Local Anesthesia?
I had liposuction with local anesthesia about 4 months ago. I seem to be losing a lot of hair. I knew it could happen with surgery but local anesthesia?
Any stress can cause hair loss. I can not give you any other explanation.
