Minoxidil On My Temples Causes Hair to Grow, But It Accelerates My Hairline Loss!

Dear Doctor,
Whenever I use Minoxidil on my temples (I’m 27 years old and a NW3) I see some small hairs on bald areas but it accelerates the thinning of my hairlines middle which currently is turned to a V shape. The longest I have used Minox on temples was 6 months in which time I had quite a few hairs on previous bald areas but thinned considerably the middle sections. Now after some months of not using Minox I have started using it for 1.5 month and again am seeing the same results which means shedding of the middle section and small hairs on temples.

What should I do? should I continue and ride the shedding or stop cause i dont think the shedded hairs are going to grow back?

I really appreciate your Opinion on this. Many Thanks In advance.

Minoxidil topical (Rogaine) does help regrow hairs on the top and crown areas of your head (it is not generally used for the frontal and middle hairline). Minoxidil takes anywhere from 6-12 months to notice change, so your results are not typical. The only way you could tell progress (positive or negative) would have been with good before photos, miniaturization mapping, and bulk documentation.

See a dermatologist. Some people experience short term shedding from minoxidil, but I can’t explain why it’s causing quick regrowth at your temples while simultaneously making the middle of your hairline thin.

What Is the Best Technology for FUE?

You should never select a technology. A technology is only as good as the doctor who uses it. I have seen disastrous results with good technology. Instead, you should find an outstanding surgeon who has performed many FUE procedures and sees his patients by meeting them one-on-one, as I offer in my clinic to all prospective patients every month.

minoxidil taken orally (read this)

People always want to know if you’re dealing with sides. I’m on my fourth or fifth day now and I’ve had tachycardia and mild dizziness post dosage. The dizziness doesn’t really seem to be impacting me until I workout. They both seem to be beginning to lessen though. I’ve also been severely fatigued. My eyes just feel so heavy after taking them and I’ve been having difficulty staying awake, but my sleep quality is also horrible due to CPTSD so it may be unrelated. I was slightly hyptertensive previous to taking minox anyways so hopefully this will help out with that.

There are many side effects resulting from taking oral minoxidil like all drugs. You need to be aware of these side effects when you take this medication orally. There is even a dangerous rare risk of cardiac tamponade which can kill you if you don’t take care of symptoms of early heart failure. Don’t be your own doctor. Taking 5 mgs daily is higher than I recommend and is in the range where serious side effects can happen.

Billionaire with Bad Hair Transplant (Reddit)

I have found that many of the rich and famous don’t do their research when it comes to getting a hair transplant, as I have had to fix many of them. Donald Trump is a good example of a botched job (scalp reductions, and now he is stuck with a terrible scar down the middle of his head with balding around it). This man that you referenced should have had his donor supply quantified and a proper plan built. Maybe he was a bad candidate for a hair transplant, but now that he has it, he can do something about it, like possibly another transplant to thicken the frontal leading edge, and getting scalp micropigmentation for the rest of his head, and he might look much better (see https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/bold-shaved-look/). After a bad transplant, he either will learn to live with what he has, or he will find a doctor like myself who specializes in repairs.

Month After Eyebrow Transplant, Still Red with Bumps

Hi. Dr. Rassman,
I had an eyebrow transplant a month ago and still have redness and bumps like goose pimples. Most of the donor hairs have fallen out but I haved had a few pimples in the donor area. I still have not been out in public since (work out of my house) it looks obvious something was done to my face. Am I one of the few that this procedure might not work? I’m starting to worry, and I do see my doctor next week for a follow up. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. By the way I’m a 47 yr. old male with fair skin. (Swedish mostly). Thank you

The best thing is to follow-up with the doctor who did your eyebrow transplants. It seems you may have local irritation and may have developed local folliculitis, which can all be a normal part of healing or it can be an infection of the new follicles. There’s really no way for me to tell if there is something wrong from just a brief description without knowing what was done and how it was done (only your doctor knows this information) and what it looks like to my eye.

Blonde Men Can Lose a Lot of Hair and Still Look Good (Photo)

The color contrast between hair and skin color is very important in determining the fullness of your hair. This man has lost a lot of hair, but because he is light blonde, his hair loss doesn’t stand out like a newspaper print of black hair on white skin.

More questions on ‘hair plugs’

When you say pencil size from the 1980w, you mean the shaft of a pencil? Presumably this little bit of tissue had several follicles? When I heard the term in the past I thought they were little wigs you wore in the receded area!

A hollow drill was used in the back of the head that cored out a pencil size plug of hair. These were placed in the front in rows. Only a quarter of an area was covered with each of four surgeries with the idea that when eventually filled in, the four quarter patterns would cover the balding areas. Unfortunately, the idea was flawed, because after the plug was put into the scalp, it would contract squeezing the plug to a very high hair density. The the central part, would die off so that the plug looked like donuts. With these high density plugs surrounding a hole in the center, the unfortunate victims has a pattern of hair plugs that anyone could see within 20 feet. I, personally, can’t believe that the public accepted this result, but they did, maybe because they felt that a dolls head of hair was better than a bald head of no hair.

Body Hair Transplantation

Two different BaldingBlog readers had two similar questions…

Dr. Rassman,
recently some hair transplant surgeons reported very good results from body hair transplants. Other doctors remain more cautious and say it may yield good results in some, but not all patients. What’s your view on this?

Dr. Rassman,
Would you ever consider using bodyhair for some of the grafts in the scalp? I was wondering because it would seem a good way to increase density results. I am a bit paranoid about using only scalp hair to graft because I would not want to run out before getting decent density. I would think that you could mix in some sideburn or beard hair with regular scalp hair in the crown. What is your take on this. Thanks for your time.

Body hair has generally low densities (contrary to what it looks like on some men) so they do not make for a good donor supply in terms of quantity. A focus upon head hair should be primary. Then if you run out, moving to other body parts may be reasonable, especially as some studies are now appearing that indicate that this type of transplant works (leg and body to head or neck). What is still missing is the yield rates from the leg or body and the growth success from these areas.

As far as using sideburn or beard hair, this is an option in certain circumstances. They should only be considered as a last resort, when all usuable scalp donor hair is used. The other time that sideburn or temple hair can be used is when a patient is going to have a face lift and the sideburn/brow area is going to be excised as the brow is raised up.

Until the research information about body hair transplants is in our hands, it must be looked at as if it were human experimentation. A number of our patients have volunteered for this, so I am clearly interested in following the experience of others who I trust and then possibly get involved myself. I just do not want to sell hype and disappoint anyone.

I have performed one body hair transplant. The transplant was done from the abdomen to the eyebrows and it failed to yield hair in 10 months. I lost contact with the patient so I do not know if the transplant showed delayed growth or reflected some mechanism that caused it to fail. What I believe is that we need better scientific evidence on the following questions:

  1. Does it works reliably 100% of the time?
  2. If #1 is true, is that for all donor sites?
  3. What is the yield of viable grafts?
  4. What are the risks of body scarring / complications?
  5. Is it cost effective?

I would want to see many successful patients before I recommend it routinely for my patients.

While I can perform body hair transplants, I choose not to until they have been proven as a reliable procedure. If I make representations to my patients, I must be able to support what I say. If I embark on body hair transplants now (even on a limited basis), my patients must know the many uncertainties associated with the procedure. Until my comfort level is higher, I will not be doing body hair transplants.

Botched female hairline

This woman had a botched hairline from a hair transplant. Clearly the doctor did not understand that the female hairline shape is concave, so I put some marks on her forehead to show what might be a reasonable correction. Of course, the final design should be with the patient, one on one with the doctor. This is not even a good hairline for a man as it looks like Eddie Munster. Doctors who do this type of work, unfortunately, can’t be stopped other than by the patients who can take them to court for a lot of money and find a doctor like me willing to be an expert witness in any court action taken.
