Allergic Reaction to Hair Dye Causing Thinning in 15 Year Old?

Im am a 15 year old male and have noticed i’ve been losing my hair on a regular basis since i dyed my hair a year ago, i think i might have taken an alergic reaction but its been over a year and im still losing my hair. i do get paranoid and depressed about it as i have longish hair and that is one of my better qualitys. it is receding at the front and strangely the part above the ear doesnt grow in very well. i could really use an opinion either way just to settle my mind. thank you

There is no way to answer your question without examining you. Since there seems to be a one to one relationship between dying your hair and the hair loss, I suspect that the connection may be real and that some damage was done during the dying process. Was it done professionally? Can you go back to those that did it and ask them about it? Generally, good professionals who dye the hair usually know about mixture and concentrations that are safe. If you did it yourself, maybe it was not done safely. Tooooooo many questions that need to be answered here for this to be an ‘online’ interchange for producing value.

Long Term Benefits from Rogaine?

i know that many people have written to you about how after a few years they start to see their hair thinning even though they take propecia daily..Ur response has always been that the drug doesnt prevent hair loss but only slows it down and after a period of time genetics will win out over the drug and you will start to see hair loss.. You also say that you shouldnt stop taking propecia otherwise the hair loss will be much more..i think you refer to it as catch up hair loss..

But one thing i havent seen here is people writing in to say that after using rogaine for several years they are now seeing hair loss..I get the impression that the long term effects from rogaine are much much better then the long term results from propecia. Of those people who are no longer benefiting from propecia how many of them are also using rogaine? I bet not many!

I myself use both rogaine and propecia and things are pretty stable..It may very well be that the propecia isnt working but the slack has been picked up by the rogaine..I would never know. The one basic difference between the 2 is one is something you take internally and the other is something you use externally. Could you tell me ur thoughts about this? I would imagine another reason that rogaine is probably doing a better job long term is that phizer switched from a liquid to a foam for better penetration into the scalp as well..

Yes, there’s no medication that will stop hair loss forever. And yes, if you take both Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride) at the same time you may never know which medication is doing the trick, though perhaps both are doing their own unique thing to treat your hair loss. Many of my patients do use both medications together, though some only use one or the other. I don’t have any polling data that shows what percentage of Propecia users also use Rogaine, so your guess is as good as mine. Just as with Propecia though, if you stop using Rogaine you’d also be subject to the catch-up hair loss.

I suspect there’s not a wide discussion about long-term Rogaine use, because it is available without a doctor’s prescription and it is not a hot topic like Propecia. I also don’t have data on long term benefits of Rogaine compared to those of Propecia, as it either isn’t available or just isn’t something that’s been presented to me (if anyone has it, please feel free to send it my way). The drugs have more differences than just oral vs topical, as Propecia actually blocks DHT (one of the causes of hair loss), whereas the reason for Rogaine’s hair growth isn’t known.

Alternating topical and oral minoxidil

My idea is to use topical once every other day and and oral every other day as well, like

Monday : topical

Tuesday : 2.5mg oral

Wednesday : topical

and so on…

I’m using topical min since 1.5 years now and would like to add oral min to increase effectiveness. It’s also getting really tiring to apply the topical everyday. Topical min was really good for me but I feel like it lost its efficiency. I’m also on 1mg finasteride for 2 months.

This makes no sense to me. If you are on the oral minoxidil, stay on it and forget the topical. You don’t want to overdose this medication because of heart side effects.

L’Oreal Studies 14ft 9in Length of Hair

A woman with one of the most extraordinary heads of hair in the world has agreed to donate some of her locks for intensive studies by hair researchers.

Hair typically grows to a maximum length of 5ft. But Dae Yu Quin, 41, a Chinese woman from Shanghai, has hair that trails behind her at 14ft 9in.

The article was published last November, but it just came to my attention and may be of interest to the blog readers…

Am I Balding? I Am 17 Years Old. Should I Take Finasteride?

Your photos show a maturing hairline, not balding. If you want to find out if you have hair loss behind the hairline, then get a HAIR CHECK test (https://baldingblog.com/haircheck-test-how-it-is-done-and-what-its-value/), and then you will know for sure. The age of 17 is not too young to get finasteride if the HAIR CHECK test showed hair loss behind the hairline.

Losing Hair is Like ‘Dying a Slow Death’!

I have been gradually losing hair for the past 4 years. I don’t think I lose more than the “normal” 100 hairs per day, but the consistent shedding has definitely led to a receding hairline and a significant difference in density on top versus the sides and back. As I continue to shed on a daily basis, I worry and stress about getting to a point where my hair loss becomes very noticeable. It’s like dying a slow and painful death.

Is there any way to tell whether my hair loss will stop/plateau, or is it a foregone conclusion that I will eventually lose it all?

Hair deathYou aren’t the first person to use the analogy comparing hair loss to death. For many men, their hair is part of their identity.

As for being able to tell whether your hair loss will stop, well, this is what I’ve been referring to as miniaturization mapping. You use a microscope to examine your scalp… then do it again in 6-12 months to see how the loss is progressing. A physician should be able to tell from there where your hair loss will end. Taking medication like Propecia could likely help halt your loss at this point (if you are male), but this needs to be prescribed by a physician and with all of this information you should be able to develop a Master Plan with your doctor for your future hair loss possibilities.

Am I really balding?

Did my dermatologist prescribe Finasteride too liberally ? Context : 27 y/o. Father and his 4 brothers have full heads of hair. Mother’s side : 3 out of 4 bald uncles. They were bald in their early twenties. I went to the derm two weeks ago. He didn’t look closely at me or do a hair count. He was like “yep, looks like MPB alright” and gave me a prescription for Fin (1mg). First pic is Aug 2017. Rest of the pics are from the last 2-3 months.

I would have performed a HAIRCHECK and a miniaturization study before committing you to a lifetime of finasteride. Too many men go on the drug not knowing for sure if they are balding. I like to make the diagnosis with instruments first, then use these instruments to establish a ‘metric’ which I can follow yearly to see the effectiveness of the finasteride yearly. That is the value I believe doctors should add to this treatment process.

I Lost More Hair Than I Got from My Hair Transplant a Year Ago (Photo)

What can I do about this? I am 21 and thought that the hair transplant would solve my problem.

Your doctor should have never done a hair transplant on you, a 21-year-old male. Your balding is progressive, and as you get older, it will get worse. You developed shock loss over the past year, accelerating the hair loss that was going on at the time of the hair transplants. I will not do a hair transplant on a patient under 25 unless circumstances are highly unusual. Your doctor is guilty of malpractice and greed because he put your money in front of your welfare.
