I have a few follow up questions:
I am from Canada and am not sure if the local dermatologists will have this device. Are there any comparable alternatives?
If hair miniaturization and loss is caused by stress, even though I may have the hair loss gene, would decreasing stress stop or slow down the hair loss? (I am curious about this because through the observation of hair loss in my family, significant hair loss is nonexistent aside from one uncle on my dad’s side.)
Given my current description of hair loss, would you recommend medication such as finasteride and/or minoxidil or do you think a change in lifestyle should be the first line of defense?
Thank you in advance.
You do need to see a specialist to find out if you are losing hair. You have what appears to be a juvenile hairline in transition to a mature hairline. This is not balding. What I would do is perform a HAIRCHECK test to see if you are really losing hair. If you are, I would recommend finasteride and then follow your progress over a year to see if the hair loss was reversed by repeating the HAIRCHECK test. However, if you are not balding according to the HAIRCHECK test, then I would not recommend finasteride. Finasteride will not stop the movement from a juvenile to a mature hairline. (see: https://baldingblog.com/value-haircheck-bulk-measurements-two-patients-seen-today/)
I had four sessions done between 12 and 15 years ago. My hair looked great. About a year and a half ago I noticed that my transplanted hair started thinning out in the front making my hairline look rigid. I recently had another session (same doctor) and I experienced a shock factor – which I didn’t experience before. It has been six months since the last session and the results are not promising – the hair that I lost due to shock has not returned and I believe many of the new grafts have not started to grow.
Do you know why –
1)My transplanted hair started to thin out in the first place
2) Why the hair I lost to shock (transplanted area) has not returned and why the new hair is not as prominent as I thought and
3) Do I have hope? Help.
First, you must wait another 2-3 months for long telogen cycles to reverse. I have never seen a previous hair transplant lose hair and then not grow back. I have seen about a dozen men who have lost previously transplanted hair, and it always came back. If the new grafts did not grow, then I would worry if that ran in parallel with your previous lost grafts. Ask your hair transplant doctor and get his/her advice after another 3 months, then write again to let me know the status (reference this post when sending).
Hello,
can you please explain the difference between “Minoxidil” (Regaine) and “Aminexil” (Dercos SP94)? I am having troubles choosing between these two products.
Many thanks.
Aminexil is made by the large cosmetics company L’Oreal and is reported to act in a similar manner as minoxidil. As L’Oreal is behind it, there is an aura of credibility to it. Aminexil is not tested according to the FDA, so there is no way for me to judge from reading the material if there is value similar to minoxidil, as stated in the various publications I read.

Will low carb diets (or no carb diets for that matter) cause hairloss in males with MPB?
Unless you are not meeting your daily nutritional needs, a low carb diet will likely cause weight loss, not hair loss.
We have made a significant breakthrough in the way to perform Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and we have put a substantial effort into giving our readership some practical basis to understand how to evaluate the significance of our breakthrough technology and the FUE process in general. There have been recent claims about FUE that I frankly can’t believe which are now appearing on various websites around the world. Considering that I literally pioneered the FUE field, I believe that I am an authority worth listening to. I have not spoken up about this before, but there is no time like the present to address my concerns publicly.
Please see our latest FUE writings at newhair.com/fue.
Also, we just announced a huge fee discount on our FUE breakthrough, which we’re calling FUE2 — or Follicular Unit Extraction Enhanced. See newhair.com/fue2 for more on that.
Hi. I recently tried using Rogaine 5% as a hair loss prevention regiment as I noticed a mild thinning of the crown area. Let me stress that my hair thinning was just mild and that as 28 yrs old, it seemed like it was a good time to start early before it got too late years after.
However I stopped using Rogaine 5% after just 20 days! I was shedding far too many hair and did not like the texture effect it made on my hair. Most of all, I was shedding too much hair! May I add that I have never noticed any shedding of hair prior to Rogaine! However, its been over 15 days since last using Rogaine and I am still shedding like crazy!!! By just running my fingers thru my hair, I see mature hair and younger looking hair fall out.
I am extremely upset by this response. I am a healthy 28 yr old male. I talked with my doc and am now on Propecia. He was not able to decifer why I was still shedding considering everything is normal. My question is whether if you have any information why shedding of hair is still continuing after stopping use of rogaine 15 days ago?? (Also considering I have only used it for just 20 days). Also, if propecia will stop the shedding due to Rogaine. May i add again, there was no blatant shedding or any problem of hair shedding prior to Rogaine.
Thank you so much
Assuming that you have genetic hair loss, perhaps Propecia would be the better drug for you. I don’t believe Rogaine (minoxidil) was the right choice for treatment and it is known to produce hair shedding for a short while after starting it. The shedding should stop in a month or two.

This is certainly interesting and suggests that peppermint oil work in mice. Does that mean it will work on humans. Let me know if you try it and it works for you.

What other “automated” or similar hair restoration systems are available besides Neograft and Restoration Robotics?
The follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique is a simple and elegant technique conceptually, but it is highly variable or difficult in practice. Since I published my FUE article in 2002, hundreds of doctors have adapted their own automation and instrumentation. I encourage this, as one superior technique or machine may emerge. But as of 2011 it has not.
There are handful of doctors who have invented their own technique in some form or another. NeoGraft and the Artas® robots are just commercial adaptations. Both Dr. Cole and Dr. Harris have developed instruments which are diametrically opposed as to how they work. There is also Dr. Boudjema in France (one of the brightest and most creative people in the hair business) who first invented an FUE automation machine back in the mid-1990’s called the Calvitron (which is similar to NeoGraft). He always has a new approach and just recently talked with me about his most recent innovation (brilliant as always).
Real inventing requires ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking, but most of what is out there are just minor variations of each other. There are powered punches that vibrate, twist one way and then the other way, that are slow in RPMs, that are fast in RPMs, that claim sharper punches or duller punches as the key to best results, etc.. The Artus system uses sharp followed by dull punches and the Neograft uses very sharp punches. Each doctor will likely say ‘his’ instrument is the best.
