Doing Hair Transplant Surgery On A Teenager Is Not Good Standard Of Care

Source: NY Post: Teenagers are fighting the “recession.”
The battle against baldness is sprouting to new heights as boys as young as 16 flock to surgeons for hair transplants, doctors and patients told The Post
.

These young men have a high return rate for their hair when put on Propecia. Propecia is an elective medication and like all drugs, it has it’s side effects. The side effects are well publicized in the Internet balding forums and hotly debated. The reality is that Propecia works and the side effect only affects 1 to 2 % of men.

Doing a hair transplant commits a young man for a life time of hair transplants without giving him the opportunity to reverse or stabilize the hair loss. Doing surgery at an early stage can often accelerate the genetic balding in young men. The overall profession does not look kindly on hair transplant surgeries on teenagers. The only exception may be if the teenager is completely bald (Norwood 6/7) and understand the full implication and limitation of a hair transplant surgery.

Rogaine Not Proven to Work Past 48 Weeks?

I noticed on the pamphlet with my rogaine bottle that it says the medication has not been proven to work past 48 weeks. Does this mean that Rogaine doesnt work pass that many weeks or that the study was only conducted for 48 weeks? I have been using rogaine for 4 months and have seen fantastic results. Before then I was only using propecia without any results, now I use both.

I found the following statement, “hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks in large clinical trials with continuous treatment with 5% minoxidil topical solution for men”. This implies that the study only went out 48 weeks. I have seen people on this medication for years and years and when and if they stop it, they lose hair. This phenomenon suggests that the Rogaine held the effect and benefit for the years it was used.

Donor Recharging — Using Body Hair to Fill Out the Scalp Hairs Used in FUE

Doc,
I have slowly come to rely and trust this site on a day to day basis, so thank you.

I am considering an FUE surgery and have been reading a lot about “donor recharging”, where body hair is placed into FUE sites to help the donor region out. Ive unfortunately been around the block with this whole field and now feel the only way FUE should be done is by adding body hair as you remove a follicle from the donor.

My Question… Why aren’t more FUE specialists offering this technique? Won’t an FUE surgery be detrimental as the area will thin to the point of very shallow density in anyone with a norwood 3 and beyond.

I was hoping that the A Cell treatments would make this more viable but no one seems to be talking about it. Hence my question and my wishes for a great day for you and your staff!

“Donor recharging” is an interesting term I have not heard before. I do not buy into recharging the donor area from the scalp with hair from the body. I am just not convinced that the quality of the body hair will make for a good substitute for the donor hair that has been transplanted earlier.

It is easy for a doctor to do this to make more money, but unless there is proven value, I do not want to get on that bandwagon.

There is a rush to see results with minoxidil and the dermaroller as shown below (from Reddit)

Over the two months between these photos, the hair has been allowed to grow out which could account for these results shown in the photos below. Always be skeptical when seeing a difference either in photography or hair length when comparing before and after pictures

Saw Palmetto Video discusses how to use it and personal results

I will qualify this video as it is not based upon good science so take what you read with a grain of salt. A huge number of men use this medication. Some studies show it has some DHT blocking effects and other studies show it has no value.

Dr Rassman, Why Didn’t You Put Your Son on Propecia Sooner?

Here’s a question. YOu mentioned in one of your posts that your son suffered from a Norwood 4 MPB before he started taking Propecia. As a hair loss expert and his father, why didn’t you have him go on Propecia much sooner??

To be honest, my son was stubborn about it and just wouldn’t listen to reason. Like the old expression, “The cobbler’s children have no shoes”, I probably could’ve spent more time pressing him about it, but he’s an adult and it was a harsh lesson that he learned. He’s since been on Propecia to halt his hair loss situation with good results.

Scalp Exercises to Regrow Hair?

Dr.,

I came across this web site: https://www.hairloss-reversible.com/my_approach.htm

I’m curious as to your opinion on the possibility that these “scalp exercises” might possibly regrow hair in some individuals after 8 or so months of doing the exercises as a result of increased blood flow to the scalp. It seems like a bunch of unscientific, hocus pocus to me, but if you read the other info on his site, it appears to be very accurate and makes the author
sound very credible.

Thanks.

I visited the above referenced link. It is based on the authors’ personal assumptions on the mechanism of hair loss. He tries to come up with a novel method for treating baldness based on his observation of his bald family members. Although it is interesting to follow his thought process, it is not scientific. Today’s medicine has changed drastically in comparison to 200 years ago. Back then, doctors had their own individual methods of treating different diseases, which at times where completely different and even conflicting with the others.

We use evidence-based medicine to support most of our treatment plans. Although lack of blood and oxygen of the scalp was once thought to be the main cause of baldness, today we know that the scalp oxygen level and blood supply is the same in balding and non-balding people. Massage therapy to increase the blood circulation can not stop the balding process.

Drinking Fruit Juices with Propecia?

Hi Dr. Rassman,

This news story recently came up and I was wondering if it at all pertains to Propecia? Do fruit juices hamper the effect of the pills or does Propecia work no matter what it’s ingested with? Thanks for your time and consideration.

Taking pills? Lose the juice and take with water to ensure absorption: study

It has been known for some time that grapefruit juice can decrease the effectiveness of certain drugs. I do not believe Propecia is one of them, but if you are concerned, then simply do not take Propecia (finasteride 1mg) with grapefruit juice. The article does do a good job telling you when grapefruit juice is a problem.

Patient speaks of Scalp MicroPigmentation results – with photos

Tom decided to have Scalp MicroPigmentation but his original efforts to tackle balding started with his first hair transplant when he was 19 years-old. Now at 47, he reports on the real price he paid for a poor decision when the technology was very primitive some 30 years ago. A hair transplant on any genetically balding 19 year-old male is considered malpractice today. The quality of Tom’s life was negatively impacted by his hair transplant due to the terrible results. Not only was the technology of 30 years ago poor but the doctor never treated him as a human being and never told him what he was getting into. Most of the old “plugs” didn’t even grow, left him with scars and made him self-conscious about his appearance for 30 years.

“I want to take the time and thank you for liberating me. I have been wearing hair systems for almost 17 years and the thought of not being burdened by the discomfort or constant maintenance of wearing it anymore is priceless. The hair system cost me thousands of dollars over the years. Having SMP is one of the best decisions that I have made. I no longer worry about my scalp, my hair system or the money I had to pay out every couple of years for a new hair system”.
