Saw Palmetto Video discusses how to use it and personal results

I will qualify this video as it is not based upon good science so take what you read with a grain of salt. A huge number of men use this medication. Some studies show it has some DHT blocking effects and other studies show it has no value.

Dr Rassman, Why Didn’t You Put Your Son on Propecia Sooner?

Here’s a question. YOu mentioned in one of your posts that your son suffered from a Norwood 4 MPB before he started taking Propecia. As a hair loss expert and his father, why didn’t you have him go on Propecia much sooner??

To be honest, my son was stubborn about it and just wouldn’t listen to reason. Like the old expression, “The cobbler’s children have no shoes”, I probably could’ve spent more time pressing him about it, but he’s an adult and it was a harsh lesson that he learned. He’s since been on Propecia to halt his hair loss situation with good results.

Scalp Exercises to Regrow Hair?

Dr.,

I came across this web site: https://www.hairloss-reversible.com/my_approach.htm

I’m curious as to your opinion on the possibility that these “scalp exercises” might possibly regrow hair in some individuals after 8 or so months of doing the exercises as a result of increased blood flow to the scalp. It seems like a bunch of unscientific, hocus pocus to me, but if you read the other info on his site, it appears to be very accurate and makes the author
sound very credible.

Thanks.

I visited the above referenced link. It is based on the authors’ personal assumptions on the mechanism of hair loss. He tries to come up with a novel method for treating baldness based on his observation of his bald family members. Although it is interesting to follow his thought process, it is not scientific. Today’s medicine has changed drastically in comparison to 200 years ago. Back then, doctors had their own individual methods of treating different diseases, which at times where completely different and even conflicting with the others.

We use evidence-based medicine to support most of our treatment plans. Although lack of blood and oxygen of the scalp was once thought to be the main cause of baldness, today we know that the scalp oxygen level and blood supply is the same in balding and non-balding people. Massage therapy to increase the blood circulation can not stop the balding process.

Drinking Fruit Juices with Propecia?

Hi Dr. Rassman,

This news story recently came up and I was wondering if it at all pertains to Propecia? Do fruit juices hamper the effect of the pills or does Propecia work no matter what it’s ingested with? Thanks for your time and consideration.

Taking pills? Lose the juice and take with water to ensure absorption: study

It has been known for some time that grapefruit juice can decrease the effectiveness of certain drugs. I do not believe Propecia is one of them, but if you are concerned, then simply do not take Propecia (finasteride 1mg) with grapefruit juice. The article does do a good job telling you when grapefruit juice is a problem.

Patient speaks of Scalp MicroPigmentation results – with photos

Tom decided to have Scalp MicroPigmentation but his original efforts to tackle balding started with his first hair transplant when he was 19 years-old. Now at 47, he reports on the real price he paid for a poor decision when the technology was very primitive some 30 years ago. A hair transplant on any genetically balding 19 year-old male is considered malpractice today. The quality of Tom’s life was negatively impacted by his hair transplant due to the terrible results. Not only was the technology of 30 years ago poor but the doctor never treated him as a human being and never told him what he was getting into. Most of the old “plugs” didn’t even grow, left him with scars and made him self-conscious about his appearance for 30 years.

“I want to take the time and thank you for liberating me. I have been wearing hair systems for almost 17 years and the thought of not being burdened by the discomfort or constant maintenance of wearing it anymore is priceless. The hair system cost me thousands of dollars over the years. Having SMP is one of the best decisions that I have made. I no longer worry about my scalp, my hair system or the money I had to pay out every couple of years for a new hair system”.

My scalp is pink now 2 weeks after surgery. Why is it that way? (photo)

Some people have skin that easily turns pink when it is traumatized. I can detect these patients in advance by having them scratch their forehead with their fingernails. If the scratch mark turns pink within 5 miniutes, it means that the skin is histamine positive and these patients will often retain some pink coloration for a longer time than the non-histamine positive patients

Early 20s, Desperate for Hair Treatment that Works

I’ve just recently discovered your website but have found it very informative. I am 23 and have a family history, on both my mother and father’s side, of male pattern hairloss. I too have been suffering, and in the last three months my hair loss has accelerated to such a degree that the hair on the front and top of my head is becoming increasingly thin, and my hair line is dramatically rising. I have recently started using Kirkland minoxidil (having used Rogaine whilst at university but then stopping as I couldn’t afford it) but not only is my scalp flaking a lot, but I am also losing a lot of hair on a daily basis. As I’ve only used it for under a month, do you think I should persist with the treatment as I have a years supply?

I have also recently bought dutasteride on the internet, having used propecia for 3 months but with no affect, only spots on my forehead. I realise that it takes longer than three months for the tablets to work but do you think I should see if the Dutasteride works as I am awaiting a two month supply in the post, or go back to propecia? Ultimately my hair loss is getting me down a great deal and being that I am so young and as this treatment is quite expensive, would it be better to save up for a hair transplant, and if so do you have any contacts in the UK that are not only reliable but might also be able to give me some impartial and helpful advise. Thank you so much in advance for your response as you can see my hairloss has left me really sad and I would really appreciate any advise you can give me. Many thanks again

There are many, many young men in a situation similar to yours. I can’t say for sure what you should or should not do, as you are not my patient — but my general advice would be to give the Propecia more than 3 months (8 months is my minimum trial period) to see any benefits. Especially at your age with early hair loss, Propecia tends to work better than minoxidil. I do not recommend dutasteride, not only because it stays in your system far longer than Propecia, but also because there have not been enough studies (to my satisfaction) that show any long-term effects the drug may have in a younger person, such as yourself. To find a doctor in the UK, I’d suggest looking at the ISHRS site’s physician search. Good luck.

Scar Length

I am 25 and about a Norwood 2. Of 10 Uncles, father and Grandparents, one has been a Norwood 5 (mom’s father) the rest 2/3 or 4. My father had no hair loss. I had a hair tranpslant a year ago. It is pretty good, however there is not as much density in my temples as i would like. The doctor transplanted 600-800 hairs, and the scar left behinid is about 4 inches – it seems like a long scar (I have quite dense hair). Is this a normal lenght for such a small hair graft? I have been for a consultation and have been told that I have at least 7000 hairs remaining on the back of my head. I am considering if I should have more grafts in the temples, but i am not sure if i should, considering i am not sure how much more hair i will lose. Would another transplant of about 600 hairs make a huge difference? I would love to have the hair line if possible, but I am not sure what to do. Also, I am on Proscar, is it as effective as propecia, and does it REALLY stop further hair loss in the front hair line (temples and or the mid area?) Thank you.

If you are taking Proscar, make sure you cut the pills into 1/4 or 1/5th size. The higher does could cause more side effects.

Your narrative above leaves me uncomfortable. As a Norwood Class 2, I would want to see you before I draw conclusions. Temple hair transplants in a Class 2 is unusual. That bothers me a bit. Can you send me digital pictures to the email address on the Contact page, or come in for a consultation with me?

Scar length reflects the size of the area removed. For 800 grafts and a 1.2 cm width, the scar might be 4 inches in length but should not be more than 1-3mm wide in normal healing. I can not comment on your remaining supply, other than to guess that with normal densities and normal laxities, a man should be able to supply 8,000 grafts of 16,000 hairs from the sides and back of the head. This number can vary between patients.
